Where should I start with Lil B? I haven’t had a computer since the late 90s so I can finally take advantage of these streaming services having his tapes..

Evil Red Flame and I'm Thraxx, and 6 Kiss also deserve to be in there (I'd put either above Black Ken for sure). 6 Kiss is probably his best album overall. It certainly has his best song.

Also I've always felt kinda bad that dude never seemed to get super-rich or whatever despite the fact he's probably responsible for 70%+ of what's happening in rap right now (for better or worse). Like dude is probably the most influential rapper outside of Kanye the last 10 years or so

J cole is perfectly average, not particularly good or bad. Idk why he specifically gets so much hate

basically because he is perfectly average, yet has a fanbase that goes nuts over him like he is some super lyrical dude. on the flipside, he's basically a karaoke act of other more serious/conscious/lyrical rappers, so some people confuse him with actually being some super rapper when hes entirely ordinary (and when some of the other dudes who actually are really good at rapping may be a bit to "spicy" at times for their tastes). If you don't listen close or really think you can totally imagine this dude being some dude like kendrick or lupe or mos def or [insert conscious/lyrical dude] but his stuff falls apart entirely to any sort of close listening.

40 lbs to freedom posted:

i wish i could articulate why i hate this album better but here are some stream of consciousness bullet points

-it sounds like heavy handed kendrick lamar. its like the 10 minute dead tupac interview except for a whole album.
-it gives really rudimentary life tips in a tone that sounds like its third eye elevated thought. "weed makes you lazy and its expensive cut it out and deal with your problems!!" thanks genius how many months of meditation did that epiphany take you.
-it has about a billion half baked hot takes like "where do my taxes go anyways??? boo taxes!!" and then starts ranting about school curriculum like those things are even almost related. you can literally read where your taxes go. taxes paid his own mothers salary. you know who would love this song? ted cruz. sorry the government is heavily taxing your millions in rap money poor you
-subjectively, its just flat out boring. every song is super turned down but there isn't enough substance to keep you engaged. there are some great one liners especially in the back end but who would possibly want to stick around for it

j cole made an album about weed being bad that sounds like it was made by some dude on weed.

Yeah sure, same here, he is by far my most listened-to artist.
Still, keeping it real, there are only a few of his tapes I'd happily listen to front-to-back without skipping any tracks.
Im Gay, Trapped in Basedworld (both of them being just under 45 minutes long helps)
6 Kiss, God's Father and White Flame too, maybe tempted to skip a track here or there on these but overall really solid.

I would argue that it’s worth starting w Everything Based and working forward chronologically. There’s a lot of filler but every mixtape has like 3-4 absolute bangers.

I’ll throw my hat in for Everything Based, Blue Flame, Red Flame, Bitch Mob: Respect the Bitch, Trapped in Basedworld, Hoop Life, Gold House (super underrated), Black Ken, and 6 Kiss. Oh, and Crime Fetish.

I wanna know what Alansmithee’s fave song off 6 Kiss is.

That's cool if you think that! I just think dude's not put out a great album. Unless you count Rich Gang but a lot of that I think was cause he had some balance from RHQ (who also hasn't done anything better). Most of his other poo poo is just way too samey, or has a bunch of duds, or whatever. You could def cobble together great albums, and if you did a "Thriller" style I'm-just-gonna-put-all-my-best-tracks-on-here album it'd arguably be a classic, but the albums he's actually made usually end up dropping out of rotation for me relatively quick. I'll grab a couple few songs off of them but a whole albums often a chore.
