Kind of surprised that elevation doesn't really play in this game, I thought I remember that being a big thing in MechCommander.

Also LMs kind of suck and that makes me sad.

It makes it kind of funny when they go "Oh good job on the missions, just go along this PERFECTLY EMPTY path to extraction. No enemies. Never."

Elevation gives you a pretty decent to-hit bonus, though? LRMs get good once you get some of the bigger racks out. Enormous critseeking potential and a lot of stability damage.

Got Blaze of Glory done in the very first merc mission with the Dekker's Spider against the Shadow Hawk at the end. Game's good.

With that said, plenty of valid complaints, and bugs that really shouldn't have still been in after a 5 year development cycle. Also, while perhaps not a bug, the contract descriptions and actual contents are a goddamn mess, which is incredibly unpleasant given just how massive the swing is in the contract payments if you're looking for salvage.

Just from some of the early ones, multiple "Clear out this lance" missions - which you'd think would be good for salvage - consisted of precisely two random bug mechs and that's it; especially combined with the need for triple parts and the sales bug you'd probably be better off just taking the money. Meanwhile, a random Assassination mission, same difficulty, has the supposedly "lightly defended" pirate captain coming in with an actual full lance including a medium.

Or, my favorite so far, just got a "defend this lostech cache" mission - with the description down below talking about how great it'd be to go for salvage this mission... consisted of a single Firestarter. Final reward was like one piece of it, plus two LRM launchers, in terms of actual vaguely decent salvage offered.

edit: And yes, in-verse contracts shouldn't necessarily be entirely accurate - something that might be interesting to keep around - but these missions are consistently doing this, which doesn't square well when the advice blurb at the bottom of the contracts is basically blatantly false 90% of the time.

What skull ratings are you doing? If you're still doing low difficulty stuff, of course its gonna be bugs and strikers. The mission text doesn't' really know whether you're taking a half skull or a five skull mission.

Also assassinates are always difficult contracts (for the skull rating) and tend to put the target in an above average (for the skull rating) mech.

Still early, so still low difficulty - both lance missions + the assassinate were pre-Argo, the lostech mission was immediately post.

Mainly just annoyed because doing both the lance missions in a row - with decent salvage rights - turned up utter garbage, so doing the same difficulty pirate captain mission, with forces described as very light, suddenly turning up a full lance including a Hunchback when I'd just dumped the salvage rights to try and stabilize early-game finances was incredibly annoying.

The unit comps are totally random. I replayed the same mission after losing my entire squad and instead of a lance of two mediums, a Catapult K2 and a Spider it was just 3 mediums and a Spider.

are people saying the first mission after the tutorial is brutal talking about the desert one you're immediately thrown into after the prologue time skip, or do they mean the one after that? i cleared it with no particular fuckups although my blackjack got sandpapered by lrms at the start causing me to take a lucky pilot hit, so i'm spending the start of my mercenary career in the medbay for a month. is the next one going to be a lot harder?

also is there a good way to just check how much heat a mech generates on an alpha strike and compare that to how much heat it sinks per round? the "heat efficiency" bar seems vague to me

Same bullshit happened to me too. Pilot got knocked down and my "hero" is now in the home for retarded mechwarriors for 26 days.
This game is all sorts of janky and held together with Unity ducttape, dreams and starlight. I just couldn't deal with this anymore and with the utter boring combat (Xcom it aint) and story, so on to the refund scrapheap pile with this.

Pretty sure they're talking about the the desert one. Had some issues there myself - though I cleared it first try - after taking two head hits from LRMs on my commander, putting him down for ~50 days, along with another singular injury on a second mechwarrior (I believe this was also missiles). Also only time so far I've legitimately had a mech wrecked so far - though that was my own fault (see above for Blaze of Glory attainment). And honestly losing the Spider for a bit was of less significance, since I could just field the other Light instead.

Yeah, I had to look at the modifiers to figure that out.

It's not entirely bereft of value, though - you can very easily retreat mechs out of the firing line if you're firing down at some schmucks in a canyon or whatever.

My biggest UI complaint is definitely wanting a number for your heat bar. Otherwise when you're potentially about to overheat you have to play the "Turn off each weapon in turn to see just how much heat you need to stay under damage threshold"

Weissritter posted:

Cleared the first post-tutorial mission. Two pilots mildly injured and my light mech pretty thoroughly wrecked, which for my chump rear end I'll consider a victory. Currently debating whether it's more cost-effective just to buy in on a new light mech or fix up the one I have. Mechlab is super intimidating for me at the moment, and I'll have to do some serious reading up.

Game seems a ton of fun, and I look forward to coming to grips with it. It sounds like I've been lucky so far - no crashes, no bugs that I noticed. I did notice what people are talking about with the pauses before and after actions, but it didn't seem too outrageous to me. I wish that you could right-click cancel out of actions.

Anyway my first impressions of the game are pretty positive, but it does really feel a lot like the game is held together with some string and gum, especially compared to shadowrun dragonfall/hong kong (which were a lot smaller in scope, to be sure). It needs some post release polishing like Dragonfall got and then it'll sparkle.
