It went Caesar III -> Pharaoh -> Zeus -> Emperor. Zeus is probably the pinnacle of the series. Emperor is still pretty damned good though.

Okay this was cool to me. In God of War, Kratos has two slots on his ax, a light attack slot and a heavy attack slot, these attacks being done using the R1 and R2 buttons respectively. Basically enchantments or whatnot can be put into them and if you hold L1 while pressing either attack button, the slotted enchantment/special attack/etc. will go off. Anyway, these slots are shaped, one being square, the other a triangle. And if you played the previous games, you'll know square was your light attacks, and triangle were your heavy attacks. So, duh, guess which slot on your ax is the light attack one and which is the heavy attack.

Having to set up roadblocks to direct distribution was a tricky system, yeah. The temples in Zeus were similar to the pyramids in Pharoah, with every marble or sculpture delivery adding new tiles or statues that artisans would build into the ongoing construction. Such an awesome series. Zeus was also a delightfully good looking game, being right at the end of the 2D era and having so many vibrant colors and generally fun art design.

In God of War (2018) Kratos single-handedly moves a massive mechanism structure. After he does it Atreus genuinely asks if hurt his back. Kratos says he did not in a very fatherly voice.

Kratos is voiced (and mo-capped) by Christopher "Teal'c" Judge, so a deep fatherly voice is to be expected.

That sure is a modestly funny multiplayer prank in a pretty generic-looking game I have no hope of identifying. Maybe it's got little things from a game in it, I don't know, but I guess being able to see your legs when on the ground is pretty new in general for FPSes?

The funny thing is, German Kratos in the old games has always been voiced by the same dude that also voiced Teal'c (and most of Judge's roles), so it's like nothing ever changed.

I think it's kinda cheating to say this, but my favorite little thing is that Xbox One now has a bunch of old Star Wars games on it's backwards compatibility list and chief among those being the original Battlefront 2. It probably was not intended this way, but i can't help but feel like this is partially an apology for the new Battlefront 2 and major Nelson going "yeah here just play the good one"

Been playing Battle for Bikini Bottom, it's pretty fun. I like that the other characters get appropriate lines for certain collectibles, like when Patrick picks up a health point (floating underpants) he can say "I don't think Spongebob's underwear fit's quite right..." Also the slides on Sand Mountain show you where the shortcuts are by placing the arrow signs facing each other like this: [>>>] [<<<]. When you see that, jumping over the sign and off the slide skips massive amounts of it.

The majority of FPSes in my repertoire are FPS/RPG hybrids like Deus Ex and Fallout. The most 'straight FPS game' I've played in the last couple years is the new Doom. I straight-up cannot tell modern, 'realistic' FPS games apart, because the most experience I have with them is watching my family play Call of Duty. I couldn't tell Rainbow Six apart from Battlefield or other Tom Clancies because I don't know what the difference is.

In God of War there's a part where Kratos is in apart from his son for maybe a minute or two, but from his son's, Atreus's, perspective Kratos is gone for what might be hours, during which he had to fight off dozens of enemies alone. After Kratos returns (he's pulled out of the time-dilating realm his son) Atreus is resentful because he thinks his dad abandoned him. A lesser game would have let that resentment fester for dramatic reasons, but soon after there's a scene where the two actually butt heads and then talk things out admit they were both wrong. There's a reasonable resolution in a reasonable time frame!! Also, any time is Kratos being a bad dad but clearly trying his best is a good little thing.

I really like it when a game has its own sort of operating system/ecosystem kinda thing. OpenTTD/Transport Tycoon feels like this very carefully designed OS with its own sharp edged windowing system and fonts and stuff. Even has a little jukebox thing that I never use because Windows has terrible MIDI. Space Rangers kinda has this too. There’s this underlying simulation running scads of independent agents and you’re trying to make your way in this little 2D ecosystem that has these half hidden doors into other weird text games and stuff. Anno 1404 was made in this midway point where UbiSoft wasn’t sure they were ready to take on the world and force them into their lovely store yet, and so all the unlockable things in it don’t depend on external servers and exist in this storefront from inside the game’s menu system. You buy stuff like portraits and faction colors with points you earn by playing the game, but it all lives locally. I dunno what you’d call this, but I think of it as an “exquisiteness” that some games have. There’s a sense of self containment to the game, or some portion of it.
