the AC/10 is the ballistic version of the PPC, the stats are pretty much the same.

I know Clan Invasion and later gets a lot of well-deserved flak. But dammit I want someone to mod in clantech, I want my Timberwolves and Dire Wolves and pulse lasers and double heat sinks and Clan ER-PPCs and ferro-fibrous armor and XL engines and... you can probably tell Mechwarrior 3 was my first introduction to Battletech. I just want to run my lance from that game, so, so much.

What's with this game and bizarre difficulty spikes? The mission where you have to destroy the dropship control mission throws you against a TON of enemies with a time limit and it was impossible for me to win that poo poo - every mech is way tougher and hits way harder than your stuff and you have to take care of ALL of them while hauling rear end to the other end of the map. Yeah, no.

Finished that one, destroyed the center with 4 turns to spare using a team of 50-60 weight mediums / heavies. Took two attempts though, first time around I went forward too fast and was spread out too thin.

Second attempt I had a fully armored heavy with 5 jump jets just bounce around to the objective while the rest of my team slowly marched forward and shot stuff.

Well, I'd like to take a moment to thank Victoria for my shiny new K2. She was immensely helpful shutting herself down due to deciding to shoot both PPCs after my Grasshopper had literally just quadruple flamer'd her well above the overheat line. Her "Prodigy" title seems a tad overrated.

Also came out of that mission with a bunch of self-inflicted structural damage, but nothing else particularly damaging. Well, aside from the requisite multiple pilot hits RNG.

I edited the files to make AC/2 cannons the same tonnage as M Lasers, and I still barely use them, but at least I'll consider it. I have never played any other mech game so I have no idea if this is normal, but I feel like ballistic weapons are terribly balanced in general. Tonnage is the #1 thing that you concern yourself with when outfitting a mech, and if a weapon has immense tonnage it has to justify every single point it takes up.

Maybe they knew stability is incredibly powerful? But you already have the freedom to PPC and LRM your way to victory so it's not like ballistics are a secret combo or anything.

AC2s and AC5s have traditionally been pretty terrible and anything set after 3050 (aka every game aside from like the MMO that was canceled in beta) has heavily favoured energy weapons. Battletech is probably the first game that actually makes ballistics really good.

But yes, they have always weighed a shitload and stability hasn't been a thing over last 30 years so they have been poop

Just be thankful we're still early enough in the timeline that the Alicorn hasn't been reintroduced yet.

And assault vehicles without support really aren't that dangerous if you're not careless. Just use a lighter mech to spot - and/or just sensor lock it from behind a hill - and then open up from outside its spotting area. It'll never get a chance to respond.

The trick to doing the star port mission and beating it in the time limit is to hole up at the top of the hill and just bombard enemies with lrms, and equip one mech to go and jump jet around the kinda long way. Once one unit has LOS to that thing it just takes a volley or two to blow it. It was close for me and it took a few tries, but the gimmick is to pincer the enemies between your units and the turrets. Bring the biggest lrms you can.

Strip out the missiles for more armor, and make sure you've got a little bit of jump capacity on it. Fill the rest of the space with armor, and you should be golden. Four medium lasers is 100 damage in burst, and the Jenner moves around enough that it should constantly have full evasion.

It's a great kneecapper.

Do you mean the mission in the desert with the guys who betray you? That mission is notoriously hard. Did you get Dekker killed? If not, chalk that one up as a victory. You can do the next story mission in just your four stock mechs (maybe swap out the Blackjack's AC/2s for AC/5s if you get the chance, but no biggie) and that'll net you over a million bucks and set you up for quite a while.

This game really needs a hardcore mode. My favourite moments have been in the early game when you need to scrape together a lance of your backup locust, a commando and whatever functional mediums you have running just so you can make enough money to pay the rent. Once you're rocking heavies and put a lot of upgrades into your drop ship a lot of that early game tension dissipates.

I've seen suggestions of loading up on SRMs and MLas as a fast brawler, getting an AC10 and punching holes in people or just going straight for the AC20 + support weapons and sprinting straight into melee to punch things, only using the AC20 if things are just outside of melee range.

Even if you do nothing else to them, the stock Dragons have more ammo than you'll ever need and if you pull that off you can add MGs or small lasers and more armour. At that point I decided to replace the LRMs with SRMs and put the change onto even more armour, making an excellent generalist and brawler for the midgame.

If I played the MechWarrior games back in the ‘90s, I probably heard about "the Clans." I know they don’t feature in this most recent game, but if I’m a newcomer to BattleTech, how would you explain where they fit in?

They’re about 50 years down the timeline from where we are at the moment. Obviously what wasn’t known 35 years ago when we were rolling out the game in the beginning is that’s who Kerensky and the Star League army becomes. But that’s not known at this point in the timeline. The reason we did that is, we wanted to establish the baseline. We wanted to be able to work our way through the timeline. The Clans bring with them a whole different culture. They bring a whole different technological base. To be able to appreciate that difference, you have to have a baseline to start from, to be able to then understand the differences they bring. It also kind of—from a game mechanic standpoint, we wanted to be able to, again, establish—to not have to take on all the varieties of exotic technology all at once, and create a good solid baseline to which, over time, we can add in all those exotic components. Of course, that depends on people liking the game or not.

quote:

One of the bigger events in the universe is the marriage of Hanse Davion and Melissa Steiner.

Yeah, that’s not too far down the road, but yeah, that’s a big one. We have, again—if players give a drat and we get to make more of this, we have a lot of fun ideas on how to play with the events leading up to that and what happens after.

So the 3025 date is so everyone's on the ground floor and can appreciate how stupidly OP the Clans are. That's fair I guess.

This thing can kick alot of rear end once it gets up close but its also got the armor to take a beating as well.

Also I finally got an Orion-K my heaviest mech yet, I run an AC20, an SRM6 and 4 Medium lasers on it and it is a pretty fantastic tank/brawler. My Jaegermech continues to see use as well 2 plussed up AC10s and 4 Mediums make it a great direct fire support mech, its only got 2 tons of ammo but I haven't run out on any mission yet.
