lmao gently caress, the Manitoba PCs are blaming the NDP for not updating to Windows 10. There's so much wrong with this but everyone who votes PC will buy into this. https://www.winnipegfreepress.com/local/province-sets-aside-38-million-to-upgrade-to-windows-10-480969503.html quote:Finance Minister Cameron Friesen is blaming the former NDP government for the province having to spend $38 million this year to boost its cybersecurity system.

Guaranteed if the NDP had actually started the upgrading, the PCs would have bitched about the spending on it.

I'm doing a lot of canvassing for the NDP in the Ontario election in Toronto area and I'm cautiously optimistic. Three separate doors in the traditional Fordlands told me "I'd have voted for his brother, but not for him." Also the provincial platform is actually socialist and actually good this time so that helps. But seriously I am very concerned about this. Many people in my family rely on rent-geared-to-income housing subsidies that will certainly be the first things on the chopping block in a Ford administration. Last time we had a Conservative Premiere he tried to shut down my elementary school and he opened the mental asylums into the streets. We're still recovering from the last loving time the Cons were in power, I don't want to see what happens next... I know Horwath isn't the most inspiring leader ever, but she seems to have learned her lesson from last election and has built a really decent socialist platform here. Can actual will for a better society win out over some sleazy rich hockey dad's cologne scented appeals to "common sense"? Please? Just this once?

On one hand I think there's no hope Doug Ford doesn't have this given how much of a blowout the polls are, how much people loathe Wynne, and the fact that Horwath is about as memorable as watching paint dry. I'd say more half of my friends who always vote provincial NDP can't name her as party leader, which is a bad sign. On the other hand my typically PC voting parents, who have done nothing but bitch about Bob Rae for the last 20 years, are so scared of Ford they're going to vote NDP so who loving knows.

The other thing about Ontario elections we have to remember is that over the last 15years they’ve always managed to find something stupid to say about halfway through the election campaign to shoot themselves in the foot and give us an OLP government. The only thing shocking me is that it hasn’t happened yet. As far as the Rae NDP days go, it’s pretty tough to do a good job when you have the business community, media companies, AND the police all putting a metaphorical gun to your head for your entire mandate.

This isn't specifically a Canadian thing, and I know life isn't fair, but yeah I'm always a little disappointed at how much easier it is to campaign as a conservative than left wing. Say that the government spends too much and talk about tax cuts, whoop de loving do. Tell people they'll pay less taxes and all the idiots get real excited. It's 1) an easier sell and 2) it takes way longer to build a successful government initiative than it does to gut it, so it's a bit of a double whammy.

Stop hanging onto the past to justify your current views on the provincial. You can't rely on stupidity alone to stop Ford Nation. The PCs probably will say something stupid before the election but if you really want to make sure they don't come into power then for God's sake go out and do something about it. Lots of people who were kids during the Harris years are now adults with voting rights. Get them active rather than apathetic. Since I've moved away from home what I'm doing is changing where I vote so I can feel like my vote is heard, and I'm strongly encouraging all my friends to get out and vote when the time comes. We need to be proactive to see the change we want, not sitting and waiting for someone else to screw up.

Unfortunately getting people active is beyond the resources or even the mental horizon of a provincial party like the NDP. Getting people active and engaged in a sustained way requires more infrastructure than what the NDP could (or would want) to provide, and frankly most elected politicians are much too conservative, risk averse and privileged to supply effective leadership for such a movement. That's why ideally the NDP would just be the political arm of a larger labour movement, and NDP politicians would effectively be servants of somebody else rather than the people who set the agenda and get to decide where all the resources are deployed. Edgar Quintero posted:I'm doing a lot of canvassing for the NDP in the Ontario election in Toronto area and I'm cautiously optimistic. Three separate doors in the traditional Fordlands told me "I'd have voted for his brother, but not for him." Means tested daycare and a three percent corporate tax increase isn't socialism. But I agree it's inspiring that the NDP is at least leaning into their reputation for using government spending to fix market failures, instead of running away from it like they did last time. The NDP isn't great but they're certainly the best option this time around and their tepid moves to the left should be encouraged.

The last time I looked at the NDP they were making noises about dropping the world socialist from their charter and their platform had glowing words about """job creators""". Jagmeet Singh looks like a smiling neoliberal suit with no real history of pro labour or left wing legislation/activism so I'm not really enthused about voting for a liberal, but orange, party.

The path to winning an actual election for any party not named Liberal or Conservative would be to engage the 40%-50% of eligible voters that don't currently vote in elections.

It'd probably backfire. If you had a platform radical enough to get the X% of non-voters who don't vote because nothing appeals to them, that'd probably be enough to get the Y% of non-voters who don't vote because they're satisfied with status quo libcons and don't really care and I'd bet Y is way bigger than X.

The greens don't really offer a radically progressive platform, they're usually close enough with the NDP just with some wifi and GMO poo poo thrown in on top and people don't really know what they're getting with the green party since their members have been everything from socially conservative rural christians who want to protect god's creation to crystal infused insane hippies.
