A lot of the core material is heavily reworked from cut stuff that was going to run in payday 1.

I can see them having the idea of making a conspiracy theory real (the PD: TH secret and Overvault was basically that) but I'm quite sure the storyline has become a lot longer and more involved than they previously intended. After all, they've extended support for the game more than once already.

Yeah I'm not buying that aliens and immortal dudes were part of the plan all along.

This does not make sense when, again, aggregate indicia also indicate improvements. The belief that things are worse is false. It remains false.

Mendrian posted:

The Yacht heist, the Diamond, the Golden Grin Casino, and a character with the general role of the Dentist, were all planned in advance of release. Word from Overkill_Wordsmith, the writer hired in late 2017 to manage the rest of the plotline, is that Bo Andersson basically had everything written out and only required minor revisions to fit it all together. The Secret stuff was firewalled off from everyone but a couple of the producers. It appears probable that originally there was going to be one box and the Diamond and maybe one additional item before support was extended. Most other content was planned as a sort of "crumple zone" that could be cut or revised depending on how long support went. A lot of the tie-in material was reworked from planned main plotline stuff. For example, Murky Station and probably day 2 of Biker were going to be Elephant jobs hitting Murkywater, and based on leftover code references, it looks like Brooklyn 10-10 was going to be Kataru trying to take out Gage in a gun deal gone bad.

It's worth bearing in mind just how long the actual production timeline is on some of this material- resources for Reservoir Dogs (which was, explicitly, for a tie-in with Reservoir Dogs) was briefly leaked within about the first year of production. The devs went absolutely bonkers when people asked them about it, but thankfully no one recognized what they were for.

Similarly, it's also become clear that PD2 was designed for VR integration from early development, too. It's why there's location-specific, icon-based interaction points for things like doors.

I mean, considering the metaplot stuff is obviously tying into The Secret in a big way, and we had Bain's Guide at launch...it'd be really stupid to not have this stuff planned out to some extent.

Not that it would be out of character for Overkill to do otherwise, admittedly.

Thats great man, and i know you've got inside knowledge, but I just don't believe it. I've seen enough writing to know post-hoc tie ins when I see them and I just can't square "let's rob a 7-11" with "immortal dudes." I totally believe they had some vague outlines for an illuminati thing or something like it but I think the rest of it is looking at the pieces they made and saying, "okay, what can we actually do with this weird stuff?"

the increasing stakes in the heists were something that goldfarb got asked about a lot and his response always was that bain was slowly training up the crew for something huge, the biggest heist in history and perhaps for all time. everyone took at as pointless hyperbole at the time because of goldfarb's nonsensical comments about dark souls and so on but there's LOTS of evidence that these elements have been meticulously planned.

It appears that the idea was that it was Murky tech for controlling camera drones, like the ones in Murky Station. There were leftover assets for a "drone part" inventory item, as well. It's possible this was originally going to be the justification for the drone cameras we have gotten on a couple heists.

Lots of evidence, sure.

One of the laziest writing tricks is to make a ton of noise and then make sense of it later so that it looks planned, also known as "the Lost method." I won't argue that there have been a ton of little hints but many of them also turned out to be meaningless and I'll believe it was "meticulous" when I see it, is all.

serialized plots can be both planned and improvised at the same time, no one is saying Overkill has a master document with 'and then immortal Gus Fring arrives for crimedad's checkup', we all remember when bonnie was clover, but there's been a thread of weird alchemy bullshit since the pdf guide I paid extra on my pre-order to have, and I'm honestly way happier with illuminati bullshit than the 'quick, add lead, no wait, I mean quicksilver' philosopher's stone poo poo we most likely had coming back then

lol bro what would it even take for you to be 'convinced' here, them releasing a full pdf of internal writing notes, fully timestamped? you just keep doubling down on nebulous skepticism no matter how many times people point out that this isn't coming from nowhere and we've known it hasn't been coming from nowhere for a long time.

i don't even know what you're talking about with hints that turned out to be meaningless, there's a bunch of people who thought poo poo meant something that they later realized was whatever.

I'd love to see Payday go full Bond-villian nuttiness. Payday 3 could even be the Payday gang working for the highest bidder, who just happens to be a US/British/Secret world government agency hiring whoever can stop the villian of the week. It's the Payday gang, they can kill all the goons while we "lower the doomsday laser into the lava pool" Read: steal it for ourselves.
