You know the world QAnon presents is very similar to what the tabloids were saying last year. Constant cover stories about how Hillary has been arrested (one had "Hillary's first day in federal prison!) and that the crimes of the Clintons, Obamas, Kennedys and basically everyone even slightly to the left of Hitler will be exposed and arrested. How Trump single handedly ended the Deep State Threats and secretly put Putin in a choke hold and had him give up Hillary.

Though I think the Satanic Cannibal stuff is too much more supermarket tabloids.

If one goes back to early Christianity the demonic and the angelic is much more along the lines of ideas that have reality, in the sense of Neo-platonism. Origen's cosmology is a good example to look at.

The thing is the political party in power keeps winking and nudging at the Qanon poo poo so it’s gonna spread faster then other conspiracy bullshit. Like imagine if during Obama’s presidency and while the democrats held majority they started to winkk and nod to 9/11 inside job bullshit. It would’ve fed the flame and you’d have a lot of people suddenly jumping on to that. It’s just the conspiracy the GOP is stoking happens to be one in which Democrats are running a shadowy cabal of Jewish-pedophile-satanists new world order Deep State crap and it’s going to lead to some violent people getting indoctrinated in this stuff that are going to get innocent people hurt. Hell we almost saw it when the GOP was toying with that pizzagate stuff and someone marched in there with a gun. The more they legitimize Qanon stuff the more likely someone’s going to attack a “Deep State” target

People miss when $10 could top off their gas tanks from empty and desperately want those days back.

Also, a fundamental failure to understand why literally every advanced economy in the world switched to fiat sooner or later. And that slight inflation tends to be actually good for the average consumer and bad for rich people due to its tendency to devalue debt, and that deflation tends to be the opposite. Unless they have just enough self-awareness to immediately pull a "temporarily embarrassed millionaire" tack.

Yea, gold fetishes don't seem to understand gold is only worth something because we say it is. It doesn't have a lot of uses outside of electronics and other applications. you can't make a knife or a pot out of it and be useful, so having stockpiles of it when things go all Fallout/Mad Max it won't do you poo poo.

But the conspiracy crowd has been hustling gold since the start, and that really pisses me off because all the gold sellers they pimp for aren't actually selling gold. You don't get 5k worth of Krugerans when you buy into it, you get a certificate saying that you own x amount of gold that's kept in a secure location. Good luck getting to it when the world is ending.

I feel like its actually in part it's something the government has told you that you can't own, and also how gold has always been a symbol of wealth. All those sheep out there with their fiat money and credit cards, I have my entire life savings in gold. In a secure location 5 states away.

That people go along with this alwasys suprises me. If I (entirely hypothetically) bought 5K of Gold, I'd want it in my possession, not 'Oh it's in a vault somewhere, but here's your certificate of ownership'.

Am I correct when I assume oversight is minimal on these businesses, and they regularly go bust or sell the same gold to 6 different suckers.

Not just that, but the certificate is actually less valuable than the equivalent amount of fiat, because it's not going to be easy exchanging it for goods and services.

It really seems like the target market for that kind of thing is exactly the same crowd that doesn't want THE GOVERNMENT telling you this guy selling gold does not, in fact, have any gold and sold you a worthless piece of paper and that merely being advertised during your favorite talk radio show does not imply any degree of trustworthiness or legitimacy comparable to any traditional financial instrument subject to things like "laws" or "regulations".

I had a quick look and the only thing I could find on the FTC site was a warning to google the company name before buying anything to see if other buyers had made any complaints about them. It does not appear that there is any regulation at all over them.

quote:

- Some sellers deliver bullion or bars to a secured facility rather than to a consumer. When you buy metals without taking delivery, take extra precautions to ensure that the metal exists, is of the quality described, and is properly insured.
- Walk away from sales pitches that minimize risk or sales representatives who claim that risk disclosures are mere formalities. Reputable sales reps are upfront about the risk of particular investments.
- Always get a receipt for your transaction.
- Refuse to "act now." Any sales pitch that urges you to buy immediately is a signal to walk away and hold on to your money.
- Check out the seller by entering the company's name in a search engine online. Read about other people's experiences with the company. Try to communicate offline if possible to clarify any details. In addition, contact your state Attorney General and local consumer protection agency. This kind of research is prudent, although it isn't fool-proof: it may be too soon for someone to realize they've been defrauded or to have lodged a complaint with the authorities.

I think it might be an industry where you don't even have to scam them (although I'm sure some still do). Pretty sure that these companies, at least a while ago, just charged a crazy markup on the gold compared to what it was worth on the market. Anyone looking to buy physical gold is by definition not savvy, so I'm sure they slap on whatever fees and markups they want.

It's weird, but we have records of this exact same phenomenon happening. In the McMartin Preschool trial - the thing that kicked off the Satanic Panic of the 80's - a big deal was made out of the supposedly-secret tunnels that went underneath the preschool, where they alleged that the teachers were killing/dismembering/raping students secretly. Of course, no tunnels were found - they found what appeared to be an old hollowed-out trash pit, but nothing resembling a tunnel. But, the conspiracy required there to be tunnels, so the kids could be whisked away to remote locations for abuse, including the homes of famous celebrities and politicians. So, to this very day, you have people saying that, no, the tunnels are REAL, and anyone who says otherwise was in on the cover-up!

It seems like people who buy into Satanic Panic conspiracies just inherently need there to be basements and tunnels involved. Most of the tropes of the old Satanic Panic are coming back full force with Pizzagate and Qanon, they're just buried beneath all of the Pepes and confusing charts.

The fantastical narrative used as the basis of conspiracy theories isn't immune to common fiction tropes and cliches.

Like bad things happen in dark places underground, hence basements and sewers, ideally with literal chains and cages hanging around like a BDSM dungeon in the former case, and ample space to perform all sorts of heinous acts in the latter. This isn't even all that uncommon among non-crazy people and is likely a byproduct of entertainment increasingly becoming the lens through which most people interpret the world.

Having been to a BDSM dungeon, they're comically benign. You've got hardcore metal playing in the background constantly and the sounds of moaning and screaming and crying...and then there's a completely naked dude standing in a corner with a cup of water from the cooler, chatting with someone else. And in the back is a girl sleeping on a couch wrapped up in a blanket because she's tuckered out from getting whipped for an hour. People are casually talking as they observe horrifically filthy acts and wait their turn on the equipment.
