fits my needs posted:can you do one of ur climate change/world ending big dump posts I'm in a better place mentally the last couple months so I don't feel the drive to rub my nose in the specifics of how we're all gonna die. I've mostly made peace with it Lawman 0 posted:The amount of people dosen't actually matter, only patterns of consumption. I am extremely 100% on board with destroying suburbia (and crushing car culture along with it) that said, I'm operating on several principles here: resource consumption and competition: 1. people want to raise their standards of living, especially as long as there exist others who are visibly living better. this is, generally, good, and I don't see anyone (sane) begrudging the rest of the world catching up to the first world wrt living standards 2. people get really loving mad when their living standards significantly lower -- to the point of rioting and purges and war. this is bad, and we're already on track for a good deal of this within the next few decades. the first world is not going to handle the climate catastrophe in a remotely sane manner and most of us should be bracing for this eventuality. the syrian refugee crisis, brexit, 11/9 was just a tiny, tiny taste of this 3. a very, very simple way to ensure that living standards are high is to keep population numbers from growing out of control. patterns of consumption can (and should) be changed, but it's near-impossible to get that to happen from the grassroots, especially on a rapid schedule -- you have to go after the people at the top who can orchestrate major change with a few keystrokes. (e.g., the oil tankers sitting in the ocean right now are polluting far far far more than the entire combined car fleet of the West or something like that) 4. socialism, while good, does not actually in of itself address this problem (nor does it solve the problem of resource overuse (though it does mitigate it somewhat), it only solves the problem of uneven distribution). multiple socialist nations have shown just as much willingness to reap as many resources as possible life and population: 5. creating a new life is not actually an inherent good, particularly when A. children without families are rampant B. 80-year-impact etc etc C. said new life cannot provide consent on whether or not it wants to be created 6. there are already far more than enough people in the world re: population interaction, there's zero actual gain to a global society for creating 100 more people, not compared to a population of 500 getting 50 more people (more relationships, more complexity and diversity, more people willing to pitch in). you will never come remotely close to interacting with all the different cultures in this world, much much less meeting even 0.1% of the population 7. contrasting the above point, more peasants means another source of exploitation and leeching for the rich. wider bases make for taller pyramids it's already hosed anyway, oh well embrace chaos: 8. even if an AI philosopher-king was put in perfectly dictatorial charge right now, assigned with the goal of "unfuck the climate catastrophe and bring us back to equilibrium", the trajectories of most of the planet's ecosystems are on a severe downturn and will take decades to reverse 9. we're due for another four billion more people before women's empowerment (and standards of living) catches up and people start having fewer children. this lasts longer than you'd think, we don't just top out at 11 billion and then immediately start to drop, we'll be hovering around 11-10 billion for decades as people live out their lives. we don't really have decades at this rate, though of course the rate can be changed (with a massive planetary effort) so in conclusion, I encourage you, especially if you live in the first world: don't have kids. don't create a new life only to subject them to what is at best an extremely turbulent next century. there are children who already exist who need families. your dna is irrelevant -- your ideas and practices matter more. biological imperatives have no inherent moral good. birth control is a blessing also, nuclear power is imperative extra queso please. no soda, only water. yes, to go. thank you, have a nice day
