It's a very strange trope made even stranger by the fact that "tall" in Japan is like 172cm. That actually really surprised me when it was revealed in Lovely Complex.  The version of this type of romance I actually found kind of gross was Fujiyama-san, though. Not because she's constantly belittled but because the manga spends its entire time fetishising her. At least Lovely Complex also had a short guy fetish to balance things out.

Most guys in North America won't date anyone taller than them, nor would most women date a man shorter than them. I get the feeling it's just not as bad for tall women here because they're considerably more likely to meet tall men in the physically heterogeneous population here compared to the much more homogeneous population of Japan.

The first thing that comes to mind along those lines is Kimi Koi Limit by Momono Moto. It starts out on a downbeat note and gets pretty messy but things more or less work out in the end, by some definition of "work out".
