Horsey was actually one of the more Bernie-friendly of the old guard cartoonists, in that he depicted the Bernie/Hillary divide as a generational gap rather than a disturbing uprising of some sort of strange beasts

I don't understand this whole "things are so P.C. now", talk. Or the "you can't do X type of humor from back then anymore" arguments. I mean shows like South Park and Family Guy constantly do "touchy jokes".

Serf posted:lmao that they start the article off with "we hosed up, his wife had to contact us to say we're dumbasses" that article is real good quote:Bryce has never won elected office and is facing a viable Democrat in the primary: Cathy Myers, a teacher who’s twice been elected to the Janesville School Board. Bryce doesn't have the political veteranship of a two-time school board member also Janesville is never mentioned before or after, it's just assumed that that reader is familiar with it. If you go back two paragraphs you can deduce from context that it's a city in Wisconsin, maybe. Could also be a county or a school district. Good journalism imo.

^^i can get behind that message tbh the only thing that article actually made me wonder about was why he’d want endorsements from gillibrand or loving joe Kennedy. otherwise it seems like he’s not super left wing, and it’s not my district so whoever they decide on seems good to me. that said, Bryce hitting him on the child payments seems...a bit dirty when he hasn’t tried to hide his reasoning and even his drat ex wife is defending him.

Shear Modulus posted:the blocking the views and ruining neighborhood character are just coded arguments that they think adding a big apartment building next to a bunch of single-family homes will make the property value go down. either because the views are actually part of the value of their property orfor other reasons property values going down is a good thing for housing affordability, because property values = housing prices unfortunately, the "property values" insanity is a symptom of the overall brokenness of our system. the housing crisis was probably inevitable because of that. the problem is that people end up sinking several times their entire yearly income into a home. even with a lifetime of earnings, it's impossible for most people to reasonably afford multiple houses over their lifetine. so the only way the housing market really works with any sort of mobility is because people can recover the entire price of the home plus interest by selling it to someone else for more than they paid, and then they can use that money to buy another house somewhere else. that means that if housing prices ever go down, then labor mobility goes down the toilet and bad poo poo happens to the housing market because homeowners can no longer instantly afford a new house just by selling their current one. underwater mortgages, etc. as a result, government policy tended to support increasing home prices and then subsidizing home buying in various ways, keeping the price going up. since this was a fairly consistent trend over a fairly long period of time, people began to see the housing market as less risky and started taking the ability to sell your home for more than you paid as a given, to the point where they'd count their home price as part of their net worth if housing prices go up enough between buying and selling, it can even theoretically be profitable to sell your house, potentially making tens of thousands just for holding onto it for a while. that encouraged people to think of their home as an asset, an investment, and a store of value, which encouraged a lot of really irresponsible behavior as house-flipping became the get-rich-quick trend of the time. this caused housing prices to rise even faster, which encouraged even more risky behavior, which drove prices up even more, etc the end result of all this poo poo is that everyone who actually lives in a home has major incentives to prop up its price at any cost, since usually well over half their net worth is predicated on the assumption that they'll be able to sell it for more than they paid for it - something that gets even messier when you consider the role of the massive chunk of debt that we call a "mortgage". this pushed prices upward until the only people who were able to buy a house to live in were people who already had a house that they could sell to pay for the new one. but because current homeowners are counting their home as an asset, they're unwilling to accept losing money on the house meanwhile, real estate investment has grown well beyond the level of boomers with a good credit rating and a bit of cash to blow, and since our market economy allocates resources based on ability to pay rather than need, much of the new housing being built is getting snapped up by rich foreign investors looking for somewhere to park their money the only real solution is a major government intervention in the housing market with the intention of largely ripping out the profit motive from all sides. but "nationalize housing" is even more of a tall order than "invalidate all student loan debt"
