Strong feudal vassals will be the largest thorn in the side of a merchant republic. Distribute titles to feudal lords sparingly.

If you make a vassal republic, it'll be simpler if/when you need to revoke their title to seize their land for yourself.

Last time I tried playing it, I couldn't plot to kill, which doesn't bode well. Pretty much takes out half the game for the 500 republics.

Has anyone done a rundown of all the top mods? I'm in the mood to try a bunch of new things.

I finally got around to trying Lux Invicta, and it didn't really work out well. The game really chugged like hell, at max speed every day took like a second or two. Maybe it's all the extra provinces along with whatever extra complicated stuff they put in the combat?

I need some advice. I play as the doge of the most serene republic of Venice and also control Croatia. I have most of the DLCs, but not Conclave if that matters. I just won a war for control of Italy and now have a bunch of counties and duchies to distribute.

My question is: As a merchant republic, should I create new republics as vassals (and at which level, county or duchy?) or go feudal?

I know that vassal republics of a MR won't be MRs themselves, but will the tax income still be worth it? Or is the levy from feudal vassals better?

I also have a problem with vassal limits. Is it stupid to give a mayor more than one duchy?

Any advice is appreciated.
A few trains of thought:

If you make it all republican vassals, you get mad bux and no malus for wrong government. There's also less stress for vassal management because it's unlikely they'll be able to scheme their way into another holding, so you'd have a republican duke who would only have one holding and a buncha equivalent vassals that wouldn't rebel.

Theocracies are fine to mix in, but the only reason to land feudal is if you want to plant some family members for score and possible extra marriage candidates and hot bodies for later, whether landing or inviting to court for more trade posts.

Duke level feudals are a loving pain because they'll always hate you because of wrong government; you can mitigate it but you should be relying on mercs and retinues anyway as a merchant republic and they can gather and inherit power much better than the others.

So basic lesson is to always fill the counties before granting duchies (you can do this very easily by making a castle the primary holding, then generating a mayor/theocrat with the button on the holding, then granting them the county) and then just aggressively spy on any that try and rise up

Theocracies are nice, btw, but you're limited in how many you can have and they can rebel: they're just less likely (loving independent orthodox Mecca I tell you what)

I'd never seen the immortality event with a child guru before! That's pretty cool. Since my heir was decent enough, I decided to go with this just to see where it led.

Oh cool!

There's just one little issue with all this: When she became 16, she became an adult but her portrait stayed that of a child. I first noticed this when I had an announcement regarding a bastard child, checked to see who the mom was, and noticed 24 year old Devanapiya was the mom, and still had a child's body.

That's because immortality stops aging, so the portrait doesn't progress, but all the pregnancy events check for is the numerical age.

this doesn't cover all popular mods but here's my take on what I've played recently:

the new After the End fan fork is pretty good, they seem to have fixed most of the major bugs (it hasn't crashed for me in ~20 hours playtime) and apparently will soon start adding new content

A Game of Thrones is always fun for me but I always end up getting bored after I play a few decades, it's just not the same once all the historical characters are gone.

However there's also a new ASOIAF mod titled GoT | The Seven Kingdoms that seems to have a lot of promise. It's set all the way back during the Andal invasion and is worth a try if you're a fan of the series. The map is just Westeros + the edge of Essos with the free cities. Valyria is an off-map empire using the China mechanics. Definitely play this if you're a fan of the series, especially if you're bored with the AGoT mod and want to try something different.

Rebels and Warmongers provides some very good changes to warfare with a ton of battle-related events, making them something more than mashing stacks together. It's definitely good.

When the World Stopped Making Sense is a mod that starts during the Fall of Rome and I've enjoyed playing it a lot lately. It's definitely not a finished mod - don't expect to see Islam ever if you pick a start date before its historic rise (there's an incredibly buggy "dynamic rise of islam" option disabled by default, when I tried activating it my game crashed as soon as the first event was supposed to happen). It's still fun, and the game's interpretation of history can be pretty great (I started a game as Justinian and it turns out Procopius Was Right -- Theodosia was the high priestess of Satan and Belisaurius had god-like stats)

Western Europe 410-962: The Winter Kings is a very cool mod. The game map is basically just British Isles + France + a small section of Germany and Scandinavia, but there's a ton of detailed provinces and troop movement is really fast since it's on a much smaller scale. Playing as King Arthur is really fun although for the first year or two you're just waiting around for your dad to die. When I tried this mod I narrated the events of my game to Pattersong who told me it was faithful to Arthurian myth, other myths, and real history too

A.D. 633: Rise of Islam is a new mod I tried a few days ago, because I've been really hoping for a game that handles the Rise of Islam well. It's... a good start? I again narrated my playthrough to Pattersong (I outsource my knowledge of history to him) and he confirmed it was accurate in broad strokes but was missing a lot of details. Playing as the Caliph, the game was also trivially easy (at the start of every war I fought I was given a death stack of 60,000 dudes. By the point I was in a war against both Rome and Persia my army was three time the size of their combined strength). So maybe don't try that one yet but I'll check back in six months or so in the hopes that the modder(s) have polished it up a bit.

I have CK2+ but I can never really get into it because I always feel like, "this is basically a souped up version of the existing game, if I want to play the game as it is I'd rather be playing on Ironman and getting achievements" but I recognize I'm probably in the minority on that.

I've been messing with Immortality for a mod, and it's kinda weird. Portrait aging stops, and so does aging for the purposes of fertility and attraction. However, you still reach new age categories. A child who is immortal will become an adult for all purposes except portraits. They can get married and do other "Is Adult" triggers. But a weird thing is that if you mod in a character who is immortal in the history files, you have no control over when they freeze, even if you add immortal on their timeline. I saw on the forums that you'll be able to define the age someone became immortal in history files in an upcoming patch and that cannot come soon enough

Mod talk, I'd also like to talk about Crisis of the Confederation for those who don't know about it. It's an older mod, and it was never quite completed/polished, but it's epic in scope - it basically sends CK2 into space. The setting is one where a united galactic human republic is on the verge of collapse due to independence movements, and while most governments in the game are some form of republic the mechanics subtly push military officers towards usurping power from elected officials and moving to establish themselves as hereditary rulers. It's got all sorts of poo poo - you can clone yourself and marry your clone, you can go deep into cybernetics until you become part of a malfunctioning proto-Borg, you can try to play as a loyal military officer who somehow manages to get her heir appointed as her successor every time despite the office theoretically not being hereditary, you can run as a space pirate king raiding the core worlds from nebulas, you can seize power from the Terran Confederation and rule as the God-Emperor of the Imperium, or watch as Neo-Socialists take over most of the galaxy in the chaos following the Crisis, there's original music and completely reworked graphics and unit types and and and

That being said, though, it IS super janky in a lot of ways and if you want to play the less broken version you'll need to roll back quite a few DLCs and patches back, which can be a wrench. Still, there's nothing quite like it.

No, whether the mystic is real or not they only get the Immortal trait if you successfully complete the trial. So a real mystic will continue to age if you fail or give up

I'm really digging this winter kings mod. It's giving plenty of room for me to work with, with a bunch of independent states of varying sizes, and doesn't immediately devolve into a thunderdome like other alternate map mods I've tried. The new buildings are also real good.

The one complaint I might have is that since it's a zoomed-in map, when you get into a war while you're on full fast forward, your armies all start whooshing around at lightspeed,

Honestly, all it takes is subscribing to the mod and submods and setting CK2 to the...2.4.5 beta, I think? Right-click in Steam, go to properties and the beta tab and that's pretty much.

Fair point about the map, though. It DOES work and it IS different, but it's ugly as sin and takes a bit to learn to parse it.

Last night I had the Hel cult try to abduct a chinese royalty on a lark, just to see what would happen. It was really easy, got her on the first try. Then made her my concubine and I get the option to raise the chinese honor guard just like if I'd gotten her direct from china the normal way.

Then I did it twice more. I thought maybe this guy was just good at abducting, but I went back to trying to abduct the daughters of barons and counts and that failed several times.

I guess the game is treating them as equivalent to lowborn nobodies in terms of abduction difficulty? Or her honor guard are a bunch of racists who think all laowai barbarians look alike.

OK, so I've finally managed to get a stable power-position as a 769 start-date Svithjod. At 866 I've reformed the germanic faith, established the Empire of Scandinavia, conquered a province within diplomatic range of China, and adopted feudalism. I'm currently working towards primogeniture succession and feminism but after that I'm kind of out of ideas except for "try to survive the inevitable Aztec/Mongol double-team" which I think isn't set to even start randomly generating until 1000.

Any fun stuff to do or achievements I might wanna get? I've been trying to kidnap the Pope in raids to sacrifice to the Odin but haven't had much luck.

I will vouch for the fan fork developers, they seem to be aware of not adding in just lots of stupid things for the sake of variety, and telling people in their thread to pipe down when they ask for the umpteenth for Celtic or Islam religions or 500 new cultures. I was worried at first about this happening, but so far it seems they are just trying to incorporate all of the new DLC content that hadn't been added when the original team retired.

The Jewish inclusion seems a little overzealous (I've seen rulers overnight just converting to Judaism, eh), but it is nice to see a small presence of them.

If you want a challenge the Norse have achievements both for forming a kingdom in india and converting the capital to norse, or for forming the kingdom of mongolia (I think it's Urgyr or something at first? Nation in the far north east). These are challenging for Norse because for either one you have to march your army most of the way across lovely low pop cap areas.

For Mongolia you need to get there before the mongol hordes show up obviously (if you have Jade Dragon you'd also want to get there before the Western Protectorate takes over any of the de jure territory). It's not super hard, it just requires you to be pretty fast getting your stable position in Scandinavia set up. If you are lucky one guy will hold the whole thing and you can capture it in one go with a Subjugation or Great Holy War. Well, almost one go, you'll probably have to capture a stepping stone county between Mongolia and Scandinavia in order to be able to interact with them.
Note: you probably don't want to try to hold mongolia and scandanivia at the same time, it's a pain in the rear end to move soldiers around. After getting the achievement I gave mongolia to a relative and granted them independence.

For a kingdom in India transportation is the big problem again. You'll need a stepping stone county or two to even be able to declare war on a guy in India. And if you're too slow getting that stepping stone, Khzaria or the muslims or even the byzantines will fill the land bridge you need to skip across with blobs.
Once you capture some territory in India you can do some other achievements there, like try to kill a tiger by your own hand.
