I know this is the Chinese Congress, but you would think they'd have a packed house here a 200th birthday could use a few more people to clap respectfully

God I wish I had absolutely any faith that the Chinese government actually gives a poo poo about Marx and all this capitalist dystopia with severe inequality and oppression was just a transitory stage on the road to "building communism" like their apologists always claim. Sorry Marx, on your 200th birthday your radical emancipatory ideology is mostly being used by a class of insanely rich state capitalist dictators to keep exploitative class system in place Big halls full of red banners and Marx portraits looks sweet though. Just wish there was anything more than the most ironic hypocrisy as a bunch of corrupt dictators sing the internationale while surrounded by poverty and exploitation.

Liberal democratic states like the UK and the USA were obviously never explicitly set up to be democracies. But challenge of the French Revolution and the rise of socialism and trade unionism, especially after the October Revolution, forced them to create a democratic myth that goes something like this: let us rule, know your loving place, and we'll deliver some benefits to you and let you choose which part of capital (represented by the parties) you'd like in power. This accelerated after capitalism poo poo itself in the 1930s, when the economy blew up and liberal democracy had no political alternative to fascism, nor the political will to DO SOMETHING! because it viewed Bolshevism as the true enemy. A post-war golden age bought off enough of the population, but the decades since the mid-1970s have seen crisis after crisis, with no end in sight: stagflation, deindustrialization, inequality, growing financialization, and ultimately ecological catastrophe if nothing is done. The myth is breaking down, and fast. Liberal democracy is in constant tension and has to be continually saved from itself. It was only ever "healthy" for a period following the most destruction war in history, with an alternative economic and social system in place. What's the solution? The smart liberals, the Piketty's and Krugman types, want to institute some sort of left-liberal revival, to shore up the social democratic states through recapitulating a New Deal but on a global scale. Most other liberals are confused as to what to do, either viewing it as a mere bump in the road, pushing some sort of technocratic alliance between government and silicon valley to digitize democracy, to create a release valve for direct democratic pressures while still controlling the system, or hoping to go full libertarian neo-feudalism. Then there are the fascists. They view liberal democracy as totally rotten, as it is, but their solution is to throw everything out, do genocide and the direct appropriate of resources for the white ethno state. my bet is on fascism in some sort of alliance between the techno-futurist and neo-feudalist types
