More specifically, they're discontinuing all of the torsos and some MkII shoulder pads. The upgrade sets are bundles that include the torsos so they're out too.

No one wanted to buy 5 torsos for 15 GBP. Who knew?

I'm thinking more as a person who has a collection of Chaos Marines from 2nd edition onwards.

If you want traitor legions your only options are forge world for certain parts at the moment. If those options move to the plastic range there is no reason to buy resin.

Imperial marines... well we've all been over this. Salute your glorious primaris overlords.

30k? Probably not selling anymore. Saturated perhaps.

Considering the insane legacy support 40k has for old units, I'm fairly confident that squat marines wont go away in-game, just the models eventually.

Realistically, what this means is that cheap squatrine recasts will be much less of a moral dilemma during the 11 of 12 months that squatters aren't available via Made To Order.

Is there a list of 40k units from prior editions no longer usable? The ones that come to mind for me all hail from 2nd or 3rd editions (like LotD's goofy commander ghoul).

I doubt they will stop being playable anytime soon but I sure wouldn't expect any new kits for small marines. Not that they have any gaps in their model line that actually need filling aside from possibly a better kit for scouts.

However, they're keeping the shoulders that are compatible with the plastic boxes, and getting rid of the mk2 shoulders that only match resin bodies. I think they're getting rid of torsos because they're way overpriced, don't sell, and aren't very visible in use, not because they're phasing out the plastic kits.

My understanding is that Heresy in of itself doesn't make much money - Heresy era kits for 40k make some, and Specialist games make a decent amount. But FW has been very much a passion project / labour of love for many years, with heresy being a big chunk of that. There's no real plan for giving people an entry point to 30k, because there's no real plan for the game. It's just what models the FW folks like, and the lore they think is cool, and the rules they play with.

I expect that we'll see FW change pretty drastically over the next five years as a more business-savvy GW realises that niche resin production tacked on in a weird semi-separate subsidiary that doesn't make much money (and refuses to get on board with simple ways to make money) isn't the future.

They're definitely phasing out some of the plastic kits - check out the fact that all the cataphractii shoulder pads are going. They're the first box to leave sale.

That's sort of sad to hear, albeit not particularly surprising. 30k isn't really my own cup of tea in no small part due to the cost, but it's very clear that the people that play the game absolutely adore it and I'd hate to see the game lose support or something. Forgeworlds relationship with GW prime has never made a lot of sense to me, particularly these days where we're seeing that the rules FW putting out for their models in 40k have very different design sensibilities and are frequently broken in some fashion as a result. Hopefully the changes we see are more integration between the two studios and not just getting rid of FW entirely.

To be fair even if adoption rate of 30k is abysmal, it serves as a loss-leader in that it doesn't cost much to maintain (these discontinued models have more to do with warehouse space), keeps their modelers busy, and pleases/excites 40k adopters with fluffy pre-traitor primarchs and neat bits to differentiate 40k traitors.

I imagine a big argument for keeping HH early on was to basically appeal to 7thed adopters without making them feel abandoned, which is less important now that 8thed is accepted as Good. Even if it's not as big as HH it would be cool if they kept this idea going forward and released final "Refined/Best Of" boxed games for editions that are ending.

By the way, for anyone curious Puppetwars' standard shoulderpads appear to be too small for primaris shoulders. They sell a variant of each pad as 'terminator' but they were suspiciously lower priced so I assume/d they're smaller. They're not too tiny though; with some sanding I'm confident that they can fit in the pads that have trim.

Also my Inceptors finally arrived, no plasma exterminators but that just gives me an excuse to magnetize the arms.

These kits are not moving to plastic. We are likely not getting Alpha Legion, Iron Warrior, etc. upgrade sets from GW. Even if that were the case, the plastic UM, BA, DA, and SW upgrade sprues certainly didn't effect sales of the 30k upgrade parts. They're not historically accurate. :v: 40k CSM upgrade sprues would be encrusted in chaos gunk and weird trim and would not fit 30k at all. These are two separate ranges and while you can transplant the 30k aesthetic into 40k, it doesn't work as well the other way around. Maybe for Word Bearers.

30k is hurting for a variety of reasons. First and foremost, Inferno was an unbalanced mess and they spent all of last year releasing nothing but custodes, including units that weren't even in the book. Meanwhile, models were still missing from book III. Those are finally getting patched with Dorn, Alpharius, the AL terminators, etc., but it was a really glaring hole in the range and it may be too late. They released an updated 7th ed rulebook to tide people over and the weekender back in February was really promising. FW is obviously struggling with the loss of Alan Bligh and the requirements of supporting the Specialist Games line, but things seemed to be going in the right direction. Now they're dumping a bunch of poo poo into Last Chance to Buy without any sort of official explanation and it's got people rightly spooked.
