that's the thing, there's no real alternative. reddit sucked it all up. you can go to special interest forums like you did before, but a hub like reddit or sa for all kinds of things.... well, facebook. there's also the well (https://www.well.com/), a super-old community targeted at intellectuals (I think). people pay over 100 usd a year to participate, and it's still going, maybe something senor lowtax should look at.

I had an @thewell subscription for awhile. It was tiered, so I didn't get access to all of the discussions, but all in all it was a cool place filled with rather nice people. I got a really big Bay Area vibe from it all, which stands to reason given it's origins.

honestly it looks like they'll (for now) keep at least some anonymity which i guess reduces some of the monetization possibilities.
