That's not true. The Reseen were introduced in 2003, and had absolutely no legal problems. The only reason they didn't solve the problem once and for all is that they looked like absolute dogshit. Here's the rework of the beloved Warhammer, the cover mech on the classic Battletech box.

So this game's tutorial explains nothing beyond 'here is how you click buttons' so I made some dumb mistakes on the first mission and found out that, apparently, Dekker died permanently in like the first 5 minutes. I'm fine with permadeath normally but don't feel like it's really my fault in this case. On the ship after I haven't (yet) found a way to hire replacements. Am I getting shafted or should I soldier on? Apologies if this is answered somewhere else in this 300 page thread.

Just soldier on; plenty of soldiers to hire. The game is easy as gently caress anyway.

How do you guys build your free Highlander? Is the default kit good enough or should I pick between SRMs or LRMS rather than one of each?

Hit up the Hiring Hall. TBH my Dekker would probably prefer to be dead, then he would be free of the torment of spending three quarters of his life stuck in medbay.

When you arrive at a planet there's the Hiring Hall, which will have up to 8 mechwarriors available for hire. The vast majority will be randomly generated but sometimes you'll run into a kickstarter backer character or one of the dev-made pregen ronin characters

At the end of a full campaign, of my original lancemates only Behemoth remains. For a long time I had a Glitch replacement named Dockside, but she ate a boot to the face on one mission near the end.

Pilots are a small fraction of the cost of a mech. Meat is cheap, don't worry about pilot deaths.

I think this is the default load out but I can't remember. I definitely took some of the ammo and heat sinks out since it had way too many of both.

Man, it's lame that on the last mission you don't get any salvage from Victoria's king crab, even if you make the effort to incapacitate her without destroying the mech. I suppose the Atlas II that you get makes up for it, but still, I should gave gotten both.

Gauss, AC/5, PPC, 2 SL. Lets me snipe with ease, can core mediums and blow off heavy torsos, and the small lasers are useful if anything gets into punching range.

DeepThrobble

The game seems to choke up whenever I get enough salvage for a new mech, but things are otherwise fine. I don't know why a little text pop-up with Yang talking about the variant would cause it to happen.

Eej posted:

Battletech started in 1984 with designs licensed from multiple anime series and also some originals. The Clans were introduced in 1990, presumably after some financial success and they could hire an actual artist to produce 1) art that didn't look like hot garbage 2) thematically consistent mech designs
I'm pretty sure that in one of the HBS Q&As that Jordan Weissman talked about how they came up with Omnimechs to explain why all the mech designs in the Virtual World pods had copied limbs, then decided they needed a new faction to introduce these radically different designs. Just add some 80s-brand problematic fiction (to match the 80s-brand problematic fiction that already existed in the franchise, lest we forget) and that's how the clans came about.

Improbable Lobster posted:

The fact that no one ever went "hey lets redesign all this poo poo so it looks halfway consistent" boggles the mind. Hell, the whole "unseen" thing confuses me. Why didn't they make new designs that wouldn't get them sued?
Money, or lack thereof, probably governed most of the decisions made by the tabletop. Even Mike Stackpole, who wrote the backbone novels for BT, complained of not getting paid by FASA. The protomechs look as wonky as they do because they were first drafts that the artist sent in expecting to get feedback, only they got thrown in to the next TRO without anyone looking at how silly the drat things looked.
