They're hard to use because they're extremely small, so it can be hard in a stressful situation to get a good enough grip that you don't just wrap your hand around the tip and hurt yourself with a punch. They also can't really do more than break skin, so you're relying on the pain of jabbing them being enough to win the fight unless you use them to do something like gouge out an eye.
