We could also force them to go to trial first where we have them read tearful confessions about how they now love the system, then consider doling out punishment, or reform.

quote:

Relative to the United States, income inequality in China is far more explainable by regional disparities and the rural-urban divide (i.e., area type). Specifically, about 12% of the overall income inequality in China can be attributed to differences across provinces, whereas variation across states in the United States accounts for no more than 2% of the overall inequality. Similarly, the rural-urban divide accounts for more than 10% of the total inequality in China, whereas it contributes virtually none in the United States. These results confirm a conclusion drawn in past studies that a large portion of China’s income inequality is attributable to structural forces such as the urban-rural divide and regional variation, both of which have been maintained by political structures in large part to promote economic growth.

China gave 3,000 assault rifles to the Philippines on Thursday as a gesture of "friendly and cooperative relations", the second shipment of rifles to the Philippines this year as President Rodrigo Duterte seeks closer ties with old foe Beijing.

Philippines Defence Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said the Chinese weapons were supposed to go to the military, but Duterte felt the police needed them more.

"We are lucky that the Chinese government provided the firearms," Lorenzana said at a news conference, where stacks of rifles were on display.

giving money or arms to rebel groups in nearby countries with no guarantee of success would be a really good way to send those countries into the arms of geopolitical adversaries like the us. it would also be a good way to get named a state sponsor of terror.

also it's likely the prc helps liberation movements clandestinely. the bank of china has been sued for allegedly funding the plo and hamas, i wouldn't be surprised if there's similar stuff going on in the philippines

gonna call bullshit on that one. you're assuming extreme competency and taking a risk that would be its own insane conspiracy theory where no one finds out the PRC is somehow funding both sides of the same conflict. which would be hosed up anyway??

i don't know whether it's happening. maybe it isn't. you understand i can comprehend the reasons why a country does something without agreeing with it, yes?

is that a riddle

I was talking about giving anti-communist death squads thousands of assault rifles

you know I'm pretty sympathetic to your view but that's some cynical foreign policy and you shouldn't couch it in any other way, or at least give a better argument

i'm not couching anything. i'm saying "here are the reasons why they did that instead of another thing." that doesn't explain why they didn't just do nothing, which would have been the optimal choice.
