Twice now on Convoy Ambush missions, I've dealt with 3/4 of the Reinforcements but never found the last guy since by the time I'd dealt with the Convoy, the Escorts, and most of the Reinforcements I was too shot up to risk the last 'mech being something dangerous. Luckily I've been going ALL OF THE SALVAGE for the last little while desperately trying to get enough parts for a real Heavy (my Dragons don't count, they play like slightly bigger Mediums) so not getting another 10% bump on NONE OF THE CASH isn't hurting me, but it's a tad frustrating nevertheless.

Every time I've had a non-KS/non-PC MechWarrior in a cored 'mech, they've died. I've lost Dekker, Medusa, and Snowman that way. Meanwhile, both my PC and Tinker (a KS pilot) just went to the hospital under the same circumstances, though since both of them ejected from the same AC-20 Dragon, maybe that's just a "lucky" 'mech. :shrug:

There does seem to be some kind of survival boost going for the KS guys, and the PC is definitely immortal.

In the same mission where I had Dekkar get punched in the face and turned into a fine red paste, I had a randomly generated newbie nobody pilot with 3 guts get shot to poo poo. The newbie survived.

I also have never hired a ronin or KS backer. gently caress that noise.

What's the deal with the "unique" pilots who aren't specifically marked as KS backers? Were they also KS backers but at a higher tier or something? I've only seen one or two.

The only MechWarrior I've had take a fatal was Glitch, in a side contract immediately after the prison mission. She didn't die, though.

I wasn't confused by them until I read that list of pilots on Gamepedia which refers to them as Kickstarter Beta.

And yeah, they're the pilots you always use in multi-player matches as was stated above, but they can (very rarely) be found in the single player as Ronin.

Yea, try and CT Mechs to get more weapons. I also just spent a lot of time flying around checking out shops on planets with high tech/black market/manufacturing tags. I'd cruise there, do a contract for full cash, buy anything nice, and keep going. Shops restock when you leave a system so you can just do some loops. New Vandenberg/Brinton/Mechdur is a good section to try.

I've said "gently caress it" and preferentially core with called CT shots now. Keeps all the weapons and you're usually limited to X pieces of mech salvage plus junk anyway.

Its not hard to let the flow of battle help you decide if you want to try to KO a pilot, sweep the leg, or whatever. "Oh hey the last enemy mech left is a Grasshopper that fell over because I blew its leg off, and it has a head hit too. Lets target him/her with only LRMs to hope for an ammo explosion, Knock Down, and/or torso destruction so I can salvage it" OR "Hrmm I would love to try to salvage this Orion buuuut it will shred me if I try to get cute, lets target the CT".

Any enemy mech might get a lucky shot and require me to spend 10 minutes reloading. Better to just blow them all up!

Had a marathon session last night and went from Smithon to the end of the campaign. I got to see my first Glitch one-shot headcap with an AC/20++ which was both the most :stonk: and :woop: event at the same time. I think I literally jumped forward in my chair was like "oh holy gently caress". I love this game. I just need more ++ and +++ weapons now.

Whelp it was bound to happen i guess. After continously one-round killing and outrangeing them, a demolisher finally survived an alpha from my battlemaster, rolled forward and put an ac20 round straight into the head of my assault, instantly killing Rusalka, one of my first random hires :(

I couldn't even avenge her, had to withdraw from the battle (assasination) since my Black Knight got downed and i couldn't risk loosing Behemoth too. Today i finally got my rear end kicked again, by Liao of all factions. I can only assume they where squawking the entire battle...

nah, that's a function of head structure ending in a 6, not a 5.

as a result a number of weapons are flat incapable of oneshotting the dome, and can only get you down to 1

Notably, the PPC++ with the damage bonus is 1 point shy of being able to dome an assault mech, as is an un-bonused AC/10. The only weapons that can oneshot assault heads are the Gauss Rifle, AC/20, and the damage-bonused AC/10+ and AC/10++.

I have a hot take about the writing for the single player campaign: it's pretty good! Battletech is built around 4v4 tank battles, with a lot of set dressing aimed at making it more badass. HBS is clearly trying to re-introduce the setting, with the understanding that this is the first Battletech story that a lot of players will be paying attention to. The dropship crew all talk like normal adults with jobs, which is great. None of them try to cram in wit or edgy emotional issues where it doesn't fit. During most of the random events, you get the best results by treating Kamea makes a contrast from that by talking like a destiny princess, because she sincerely buys her own nobless oblige hype about wanting to fight for her people. The game lets you know that she's egotistical and naive, but still believes in the poo poo she's saying. The narrative dares you to believe that, in a feud between scheming space nobility in an indefinite-warfare dark age, there can be people who go generally try to be good. I think that's kind of a braver narrative choice than, "it turns out everyone is a selfish poo poo forever." If that were the case, the factions might as well be Red Team/Blue Team. If there are people who can overthrow a fascist dictatorship and build something marginally less lovely in its place, then the Succession Wars have stakes, the protagonists can care about things, and the setting has a heart. There's still Option B) "I'm only in it for the C-Bills," and that becomes a more interesting choice if there's something like a sincere heroic tryhard goodguy to contrast it against. Also the painted cutscenes are cool and thematic as hell.

Which is a welcome change of pace from what I've seen of the TT rules, where weapons capable of blowing out the head in one shot go from exceedingly rare and dangerous to outright prolific as the tech progresses. Hopefully any future Battletech games/expansions/whatever will shy away from mimicking that trend as tech advances.

Clan PPCs being able to headcap is stupid, because they have no downsides. You struggle to put more than one headcapper on a mech in 3025 and it will be short range, ammo limted and run hot. With gauss rifles you can maybe fit two in one mech and the short range disadvantage is gone.

Then comes Clantech and Double Heatsinks, and suddenly you can throw unlimited ammo, ultra-long range, no minimum range headcappers everywhere and heavier mechs can easily mount 2 or 3. Damage output goes up dramatically but armor does not.

I think giving the head one more structure helps with the head nonsense. I hope Clan ER PPCs go to 12/10 rather than rather than 15/10 for damage/heat and I really hope that their fix for DHS is to make the Engine Heat Sinks not be doubles.
