Curses, I keep forgetting they have subs!

The raiders were out to hunt carriers, instead they find laden troop ships.

Thunderbolts!

How did you get there?

No survivors!

show off, you have effective land based fighters. We get it.

There are a lot of Allied ships in the water. I need to sort this.

I'm disappointed by the lack of hits.

Sigh.

I'm not stupid enough to think I can get that lucky twice.

Their guns rake Wake.

They are of course landing another base force.

Lots of action, but not much in the way of actual killing. Well, not including the suicide landings at Wake.

31/100. I think I may well do this!

Yeesh. Two sunk CV's and the Allies are sending an equally as strong one (seemngly) on another raid somewhere else.

So is the Kido Butai withdrawing back to Rabaul to replenish air grousp or doing a few more sweeps to see if they can hit anything?

Gray may have sunk 2 fleet carriers, but there are a dozen more out there with a dozen more on the way. Grey took a smart, aggressive roll of the dice and came out ahead. If that second strike were targeted at his carriers we could be talking about this being a Philippine Sea type battle that permanently destroys the Kido Butai as a major force. Grey could have easily lost multiple fleet carriers there, irreplaceable assets.

A Japanese victory is far from a sure thing ar this point.

Is "Base force" just a small garrison unit? Does it have any additional value, like engineering units that maintain fortification and air strips? I was wondering if sacrificing base forces on taking defended islands screws Allies in any way except taking out squads? Can you order empty units for PP?

He was aggressive and it worked. He also thought it was just some CVE's and they lost a lot of their air power in the initial strike. Based upon intel (presuming it was just two CVE's) they'd have had almost no strike power left. he played aggressive - but with a reasonable prediction based on intel.

He lost a lot of planes but no damaged ships, and hopefully has a bit of breathing room to rebuild his air grousp and train up some pilots again. Two dead Essexes and a third that should be in a shipyard for a few weeks isn't bad - even if small in the swing of things.

Base forces include engineers to expand ports, airfields, and fortifications, and also include small amounts of air support enough to run one to two squadrons.

You still want a dedicated engineering unit for any major construction projects, and you still want a dedicated Air HQ for major air operations, but a base force (and multiple base forces) are the basic building blocks of running a base, and it's damaging to the AI for them to be pissing them away like this.

It's also the case that destroyed units can be "respawned" by buying them off with Political Points, but I don't know if the AI is capable of using that functionality.

Oh, I never thought it was a pair of CVE's, I knew what I was getting into - that was far to many planes for two CVE's.

Theoretically given losses, how many CV's/CVL's/CVE's would the Allies have available at this point in the game (May 1944) if folks had to ballpark?

Going by the Lucky Ship database to see which ships have already been sunk:

CVs: USS Hornet, USS Bunker Hill, USS Essex, USS Hornet II, USS Lexington II USS Intrepid, USS Franklin (Well not yet, but it'll be here in like two weeks)
CVLs: USS Bataan, USS San Jacinto
CVEs: lol

IIRC a few of those ships like the Essex are probably in for repairs, but otherwise the AI still has a boatload of carriers to throw at Grey if it can figure out how.

edit: oh and that's not even counting the British carriers

Double Edit: For extra fun, here's an update to a post I made last year:

Acebuckeye13 posted:

So I have no idea what the actual dates of introduction are in the game (Someone else can look that up), but this is roughly what I can find out via Wiki when the various Essex-Class ships made it into the PTO (Counted as when they made it into Pearl or Ulithi):

USS Essex: May 1943
USS Yorktown: July 1943

USS Lexington: August 1943
USS Bunker Hill: September 1943
USS Intrepid: January 1944
USS Hornet: March 1944
USS Wasp: April 1944

USS Franklin: June 1944
USS Hancock: September 1944
USS Ticonderoga: September 1944
USS Randolph: January 1945
USS Bennington: January 1945
USS Shangri-La: February 1945
USS Bon Homme Richard: April 1945
USS Antitem: June 1945
USS Boxer: August 1945
USS Princeton: N/A
USS Lake Champlain: N/A
USS Tarawa: N/A
USS Valley Forge: N/A
USS Philippine Sea: N/A

Also, for fun, the Independence-class light carriers:

USS Independence: July 1943
USS Belleau Wood: July 1943

USS Princeton: August 1943
USS Cowpens: August 1943
USS Monterey: November 1943
USS Cabot: December 1943
USS Langley: December 1943

USS Bataan: March 1944
USS San Jacinto: Early 1944

And finally, the big boys: The Midway-Class Carriers:

USS Midway: N/A (Commissioned September 1945)
USS Franklin D. Roosevelt: N/A (Commissioned October 1945)
USS Coral Sea: N/A (Commissioned 1947, though presumably a still-hot pacific war would speed up the process somewhat)

3 CVs confirmed sunk, 5 either assumed sunk or heavily damaged and with heavy fires.

6 CVEs confirmed sunk, with another 7 assumed sunk or heavily damaged.

2 CVLs confirmed sunk, and 4 potential sunk ships.

Yeah, my list is a best case scenario for Grey, and even if all those ships are truly sunk he still doesn't have carrier superiority. A pretty good illustration of why Japan really lost the war if nothing else :v:

He had to lose some preWW1 cruisers before he could bring out the modern stuff, you see. Gotta keep it fair.

Though, to be honest, the fact that the Katori managed to live into 1944 while being a part of a wildly more active Kido Butai is astonishing.
