Completely unrelated to speedrunning, but I just solved a mystery that's been bothering me since I was a kid playing this game.

One time I was at a hotel with my parents, and they had a game rental system available which would let you play games that were loaded from a central server in the hotel. I remember playing Kirby's Dream Course, and being unable to get past the first world because the game wouldn't let me recover any health from killing enemies or clearing levels.

I just happened to think about it now, and then I looked at TCRF to confirm my suspicion: it was an anti-piracy mod in effect because it wasn't being played on a legit SNES!

I wish I could remember what that system was called. I also played a lot of Super Punch-Out on it.

I had the same problem of not getting tomatoes when trying to play the game on an emulator several years ago. I couldn't understand why it was so much harder than when I rented a cartridge as a kid.

I remember reading about this ages ago, so it wasn't too difficult to dig back up: It was the Nintendo Gateway System, which was a part of the LodgeNet hotel entertainment service.

A Reddit Post Linked On That Page posted:

LodgeNet supplies TV, music, movies, internet access, and games to these hotels. If you've rented a porno in a hotel, the chances are it was put there by LodgeNet. And yes, many, many, many people pay those ridiculous prices for hotel porno flicks. As a matter of fact, adult content is the single largest revenue generator for the company.

Super Nintendo was the first game system placed in the hotels. Some old systems containing the SNES still reside in certain hotels too stubborn to upgrade their equipment. Then came the N64, and after that, the Gamecube. But, as many hotels are/were too cheap to upgrade, the N64 resides in many locations still.

We were working on a Wii product for a while, but I think the risk of placing the required equipment in all of the rooms far outweighed the possible revenue generation. Now, you can find hotels with a custom Wii interface installed in their public areas, such as the foyer. LodgeNet has a very strong relationship with Nintendo. I even managed to get a Wii shipped to my door during the holiday season at a (very slightly) discounted price back when they were impossible to get a hold of in 2006-7.

As far as the SNES, N64, and GameCube are concerned, the games are stored on a central server in the LodgeNet equipment rack in the hotel's underbelly. The controller connects to the internal card (or set top box on older systems) that handles all the LodgeNet traffic for movies, games, music, etc. and the game plays from the central server.

The First of the Adorable Dead
I have a question for folks here concerning glitches. I run Tokyo 42, a lovely game that literally only one other person has run and that was over a year ago. I am essentially the only runner, to the point where i kinda have had to define categories and stuff. There are a number of glitches in the game that allow you to do things that obviously were not intended. These include flying through a funny item combination, and teleporting to places that you are not supposed to be able to teleport. Early on i decided that I wanted there to be a glitchless category, and now have come to an issue. Previously there was on skip i allowed in glitchless, death warping, which in one case allows you to warp back to a checkpoint with the objectives you completed still intact (which does not happen in other levels most of the time). I allowed this because it could be relatively easy for you to get killed and accidentally do a death warp in the normal course of play.

Anyway, getting to my issue. I recently found out that during a specific cut scene I can throw grenades. Normally cutscenes either let you do whatever you want or completely lock out your movement. This cutscene, for whatever reason, only locks your movement, and still lets you shoot. While there is a large object in the way with the right placement before activating the scene you can still hit the boss with grenades during the scene, and in fact kill him before he does anything (This is normally a quite difficult fight that mostly gets cheesed in other manners, but this is a lot easier as he just sits there instead of jumping around a lot). I lean toward calling this a glitch and not including it in the glitchless run, because I originally intended for this run to be more of a run of the game a the way it was designed to be played, however I'm not completely sure whether others would agree with my logic. Anyone have any thoughts?

yeah, make a 'no major glitches' category and put all the big ridiculous stuff that lets you circumvent most of the game in it, then let the regular run be the game mostly as intended with small tricks and strats allowed

Call it glitchless/no cutscene grenade and you're golden. Also if you're the only person running it, you are the community, and ultimately everyithng in speedruns is decided by the community. Death warping isn't considered a glitch in most games either.

the only reason to make categories of speedruns is if one guy doesn't have fun running a category with a new trick in it that's too hard so they call it "for babies" and say "any% no rba is the TRUE category for REAL speedrunners" and start arguments with the rest of the guys.

if you have one guy in the community then you really can't start arguments with yourself. so just do whatever and have one category and only start caring when the second runner comes in to start arguing with you.

Ya I just added no cutscene kill to the rules for Glitchless. The deathwarping thing is mainly just this weird interaction where in most missions it does not save progress if you are killed, but there is one mission where you need to place three bombs and then leave a facility. Turns out when you die the bombs you placed stay placed instead of resetting like most missions would do. So I get a checkpoint right by the exit, place all three bombs, kill myself, and save all the time it would take me to escape the facility. I don't have any problem with that being in the glitchless run.

Loading an in-engine cutscene that takes place in another part of the map so quickly is amazing enough that not keeping track of a cool down timer while maintaining the location and momentum of the box when it gets back to where you are is amazing

I'm pretty sure I've played games where similar events would just flat out reset all physics objects to their default locations

For sure, I'm just joking around. If it took this long for one of the million nerds actively trying to break the game in every way to discover it outside Nintendo, it's completely understandable that they overlooked it

Not that she's been a part of the community for some time but narcissa got perma'd today for what sounds like a bunch of lesser offenses wrapped up and delivered as a big one. Really strange tale on this one, going from essentially the face of speedrunning several years ago to ending up like she did, which is a person deeply in need of help.

I'm being hopeful in thinking maybe being away from Twitch would be good for her and I hope she finds help.

Woops, forgot to add that part but it was from Twitch. Now sometimes Twitch permas can last lesser periods of time like several months or they can last years (Tyler1's insanely toxic gf got unbanned recently after 2 years I believe) or they can be actual permabans so who's to say on this.

I mean luckily if she wants to continue streaming there's Youtube, who at this point tends to give less of a gently caress than whatever sanitized poo poo Twitch is building towards, so at least she can still stream if it's a big deal to her.

I just popped onto her twitter to see what the hub bub was about, and this is in the context of just listening to her appearance on the Beyond The Filter podcast (Oct 23, 2017), but I'm guessing that she's back on her bullshit.

She mentions several times that she got super into weed and wasn't in a good place emotionally/headwise, and then you see stuff like this on the TL:

Judging from a few twitter replies, I'm going to assume that it was on good faith that she was restreaming some anime and was doing Other Non-Twitch Approved Things (sleeping, making out, whatever). I hope she has a support network that she can rely upon; however, I'm not going to hold my breath considering the current state of what the future holds for this particular cohort of Americans ("millennials" for the lack of a better term). :(
