Different factions like to run different mechs, so depending on the planet or planet loop (the game seems to favour ping ponging you between 2 or 3 planets even with the travel missions), you are going to see a lot more of certain mechs.

I kind of think of them as the 'standard' Heavy.

it would be spiteful to put jellyfish in a trifle
I've gotten myself to a point where 3 of 4 of my mechs can instantly core any mech under 80 tons (the 4th is a catapult built specifically to knock down stuff i want to keep) and i'm not sure how much game there is left here. Every mission is 3 or 4 quickdraws, a couple of orions probably, and for some reason a locust. Should I be traveling away from the concordat / aurigan space I've been jumping around in to mix things up? Is this just the end game? I can't go a lot of places except deeper into the periphery because of "travel restrictions" and I don't know why. I haven't done the final mission but please help me figure out how to have fun in the end game before I do.

(edit) the final mission says it wants me to have several lances ready, which I don't because I sell all of the lovely mechs I don't want to use. How many robots do I actually need to field tho?

And how many mechwarriors do we need to have trained up to fill those lances? I've only got 5 with any sort of promotions.

Goombatta!
You need a maximum of seven mechs and seven mechwarriors.

Basically, any mechwarrior with injuries from the first mission will need to be replaced. Any mechs that have taken internal damage will ahve that damage carry over. You do get a free pilot (You Know Who in her You Know What), but if you took severe losses in the previous mission, you'll need three supporters, but it is actually somewhat easier because it's Lance v Lance.

Once you finish the campaign the map opens up and there are tougher enemies (pretty much all 5 skulls), often you'll have to fight multiple full assault lances. Or you can play the MP.

We live in a world where the Shadowhawk is genuinely one of the better mechs on the roster.

Mostly by being a max tonnage Medium, meaning its got better initiative than comparable Heavies while also having good all-around mobility, decent available tonnage, and a fair hardpoints. Thanks to that, the Shad is a good all-around brawler for a large chunk of the game and can take a beating while spotting for LRMboats like the Centurion or the Jagermech.

And without the context of this game that sentence I just typed would sound like nonsense to anybody who knows anything about Battletech.

The annotated one is the better version, no doubt.

However, that wasn't the cartoon I was complaining about. I was complaining about this one...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=djhsu7WmAz4

...because if Harmony Gold hadn't sued HBS (and Piranha Games, though I care less about them) we'd have some of the classic 3025 'mechs in the game as well, like the Archer, Crusader, Phoenix Hawk, Marauder, Rifleman, and my personal nostalgic favorite, the Warhammer. Also the pretty but mostly useless Wasp and Stinger to shoot up in the early game instead of just Locusts and Commandos.

HBS has won their half of the lawsuit, but its likely the disputed 'mechs won't make it into the game until Piranha wins their half, and who knows how long that'll take?

Granted, it was because 10 year old me thought BattleTech was a Robotech game that I got into BattleTech (technically BattleDrods at the time) in the first place, but the fact that they haven't actually published a drat Robotech thing in decades but still go around suing everyone else over rights to a property it now appears they never really had has done a lot to kill whatever affection I had left for Harmony Gold.

They didn't really win, they just chose not to use any disputed mechs, so HG had no grounds to sue them. Dumps it all on PGI, but legally a way safer move for both HBS and PGI.

I run a Grasshopper with 7 MLs, 6 SLs, and some double heat sinks and it regularly outdamages my assaults. Jumping over a guy and doing a called shot on his back CT is instant death for any mech in the game.

Has anyone else run into a bug where the timeline won't advance? I'm up to the Extraction story mission but every time I try to leave Panzyr, the Argo leaves orbit and then it says timeline advancing but nothing in the timeline moves up, no progress is made towards the jumpship.

Edit: If i try to load a game, it shows no saves and then you're stuck on the loading screen until you force close the program. I haven't modded anything.

Edit 2: I did different things in the mechbay and barracks before leaving Panzyr, timeline advanced until I got a financial report and then hung up again.

Mine hasn't been getting shot that much anymore since I put him to sniping duty in the Highlander, but he'd been taking hits pretty frequently up to that point. On the other hand, Behemoth almost always gets hit - and most of the time upon the very first shot she takes in a mission. Admittedly I usually play pretty aggressively with her, especially now that she's in the laser show boxing Grasshopper, but still.

Anyway, I did the penultimate (I think?) mission last night and holy moly was I glad when that was over. Maybe I was missing some obvious tactic, but it appeared to me that the only way I could (minor spoiler) get to the objectives in time was to split my forces in two (or three really, since my Highlander couldn't keep up with the rest) after taking out the first target and leg it to the other two while getting shot in the back by the OpFor. Managed to survive without any losses other than the ammo-carrying arm on Glitch's mech, but for a while things were looking hairy.

So I am past the second main story mission, and I went on a 1.5 difficulty mission with 3 meds and a light because my other med was in the shop. Suffice it to say, after we hosed what was left of Rook out of the cockpit before we sent that mech to the scrapyard, I wondered: Is this like some of the earlier mech games where you always need to field the heaviest lance you can? I was under the impression that lights might still have a purpose further in.

It's also possible I did something stupid, but he had 4 evasive stacks and I thought he was safe but v:shobon:v

There is a global difficulty increase tied to the story missions. After a while it becomes impractical to bring lighter mechs.

Even at the very start of the campaign, you're already in a situation where anything lighter than a 35 ton "battle light"(Jenner, Firestarter, Panther) is questionable, at best. The campaign is tuned so that you are generally expected to field the heaviest hardware you can put on the ground because you're running with one lance max and the majority of the time you will be badly outnumbered and out-tonnaged by the opposing forces so you need every scrap of firepower you can muster to overcome those odds.

Light mechs are substantially more useful than they are in tabletop and are still extremely useful in skirmish and multiplayer, but for the purposes of the campaign they are pretty much an option of last resort. You're pretty much never going to get meaningful value out of something like a Locust or a Spider besides a sensor lock bot.

Are faction missions gated behind progressing the story? I've been tooling around Taurian space pre-Panzyr and got my Suns rep up to high Allied, and some of the faction missions are still blocked off. Merc rep is also in the 600s, if that's why, the tool-tips in this game are goddamn useless a lot of the time.

A number of the factions(Taurians, some of the great houses) are locked behind story completion status, yes.

Something I would really like would be a change to how pirate missions distribute mechs. Like sure they can have a bunch of mechs but they should be shoddy and no more than mediums. Difficulty would be made up in numbers rather than tech.
