Actually, a combo entry vault could be cool. But not if it was unreasonably difficult.

SPACE FACE! SPACE FACE!

As a challenge I'm trying to ascend some fighters from races I don't normally play. I'm super boring with this game and basically have only ever 15 runed MiFi, FoFi, GrFi, VsFi, HoFi, TrMo, OcMo, OgMo and DsGl. I'm going to branch out and try all the races, the first of which has been merfolk. Which, I'm amazed I haven't tried before because they are OP as gently caress for melee. +4 polearm? +3 dodge?

My question is, where do you guys end up with weapons. It seems like Bardiche for two handers and a Trishula (? which I've never seen) for one? I'm probably going to go Zin for tomb so can't have a demon trident in the long term. Not sure if I want to keep shield going or not, but it does seem the one handers for polearm don't scale up as well as say eveningstar for flail.

Trishula are a TSO gift, the transformed version of a Demon Trident (or maybe from Holy Pan, not sure if anyone there carries one). So unless you're going TSO you won't ever see one. And even then you have to be using a normal trident until you have enough piety to bless the Demon Trident or just go 2-handed anyway.

I would do 2-handed + Ice magic. Use Ice Beasts to keep enemies stuck in Ice Clouds while you poke them from afar

This doesn't take long if you go zin->donate a shitton of money->wait until your piety hits max->go TSO, keeping a bunch of piety->do crypt

Mennas is the only enemy source of a trishula.

Merfolk should just use 2-handers most of the time, feel free to take a trishula and shield when you get the chance.

Man I dunno, this game is sending me messages about shields. So far I've found:
- +10 large shield of Ignorance {rN+ Int-4}
- +18 Shield of the Gong {rElec rN+ MR+ EV-5}
- Manual of Shield
- Brooch of Shielding {Reflect SH+8}

Too bad no accompanying weapon though. Demon trident Elec +2 is the best one-hander thus far, though I have normal branded tridents out the rear end after shoals.

All that stuff sounds good enough to use shields, elec/pain/distortion dtrident are the best one-handed polearms other than trishula! If you're with Zin or Ely, just leave - for Qazlal/Chei(or any) and use Gong/Ignorance respectively.

What kind of weapon are you hoping for that's better than a demon trident of elec? That's the best possible 1h polearm (other than antimatic/holy in their respective niches).

SPACE FACE! SPACE FACE!

While I'm at it some thoughts on Gooncrawl in general (I played 0.17 almost exclusively before this, so if some of this stuff isn't Gooncrawl specific I apologize):
- Something is weird with OOD; I'm often finding Ogres, Orc Warriors, once a Spark Wasp, and other monsters on D3 that are basically a game over. Not sure if this is on purpose, but was one of the first things I noticed. Sometimes I survive it/can get around it and haven't found a special vault that would have spawned them in, or at least not one I recognize.
- Not gooncrawl, but the scarves thing seems goofy and useless.
- Not gooncrawl, but rCorr moving to rings gets a big thumbs up from me.
- Mutation is in a really good place right now
- Reflection has changed, but done so in a way that is mathy and weird to understand (+4 amulet is better than +2, but is either worth using at all? Or hold out for +6?)
- Wands are better than they've ever been; I'm actually using them way more to get through hairy early stuff. As always though, they fall off in the later game, unless there's some wrinkle I'm missing about Evo improving their results (I almost never train Evo since disc of storms is gone)
- Harp of healing seems cool, but I always forget to use it
- Might be confirmation bias, but secondary armour seems way rarer now. I had one guy (an Oka worshipper no less!) who didn't find a single one of gloves, boots, cloak/scarf, hat/helmet until the last level of lair (after clearing D15 and Orc), and that was from an acquisition scroll.
- Speaking of Orc, I really miss being able to fart around in 4 levels of it, especially since O1 seems to have more knights, sorcerers, high priests, etc on it now. I'm weird though and play melee characters and usually do Orc first
- Lair 8 to 6 is basically a push which means it was probably a good change.
- Elf has a ton of new vaults and crap and it's really neat! gently caress those elemental guys because they make it harder!
- Most of the new tiles are really neat!

I play crawl in a weird way, I always play the melee classes exclusively, and have never played a caster or missile specialist. I got no excuse for it, and it's probably pretty dumb; I mention it mostly to indicate that my observations won't be the same as other people. I'm trying out melee stuff on every race though and am curious to see how that plays with the new ones, though I am not going to try very hard on Mu, Fe, Elf (any).

ive been getting all your secondary slot armour drops :smugmrgw:

to answer your other points

- think you probably havent found the scarf of repel missiles yet. i think the other scarves should be brought up to rough parity w that one, really.
- train evo. just taking it to level 6 doubles the power of your wands which goes a long way in itself, and i think it continues to scale p well? (wands do have spellpower caps tho)
- i agree that 2 levels of orc is just too short. give it 3 like the elven halls imo
- oh also i think reflection is p simple isnt it? +x to SH and you get the reflection ego to your sh stat. it depends on how much 2 or 4 or 6 SH is worth to you, reflection itself is really more of a hilarious bonus feature

What I don't get about scarves is why isn't that poo poo just cloak egos again? Why do I have to choose between +3 AC and RMsl but not +3 AC and envocable Blink or Invis?

Why do we have a single one item that can't come in artifact flavor?

Like, I'm super glad for the chance of early cloud immunity or rF rC in what otherwise seems to be the least useful item slot but I really don't see the justification of their existence in place of just buffing cloaks by adding all the egos to them and making it more likely an enchanted or ego one spawns.

I know I'm often one of the "infinite complexity is good" guys but in this case it really seems arbitrary and confusing without adding anything?

imo the resistance scarf should also give electric resistance and the cloud scarf should give the ability to walk in deep water

I kind of get the idea behind scarves? Much stronger brands in trade for some AC&rarity, but I don't understand why they're not allowed to be randarts. Cloud immunity could definitely use some buffs though.

They're not stronger brands though, evocable invis is better than anything that comes on scarves.

I do not believe anything would need to have changed to get ogres and orc warriors on d3, and neither is "basically a game over".

Not to say it's impossible something has changed but I've seen people talk so so many times about "monsters are spawning too early, why did you change depth they spawn at" only to be told nothing has changed, so I'm a bit biased to say unless you have a large sample size this may just be clustering illusion

Replace scarves with unrands, like a rebreathing mask for cloud immunity and deep water walking, a really well insulated scarf for rf rc and relec. A sequined prayer showl for gspirit and mp regen.

A magical bomb collar that has invocable high powered inner flame but mesmerizes when you use it.

Vest of the jihad, has */+inner flame and rf++ (or -rf) and AC and pisses people off while derailing threads

Again what IS the point of scarves as distinct not-closks, I still don't get it.

Yeah some of them are pretty good but they still seem extremely weird by being basically jewelry egos in cloak slot.

I don't think it's interesting, I think it's needless complexity to have it be a different, somewhat worse base item type

practically speaking it just means I usually don't wear scarves unless I've found no resist rings and find a scarf of resistance. spirit shield is good obviously but you find it on amulets more often

I'm really enjoying hellcrawl right now, it's streamlined so much crap, it's really flowy gameplay. Only issue I have is that every time I get rolling I seem to land in an open floor surrounded by enemies and die in a cascading failure of repeated teleports. Would love to hear what your experience is, anyone else who's played it.

Hellcrawl starts out about as hard as vanilla crawl in D:1, then climbs slightly faster, and decides that each new branch should be actually harder than the last, not just stronger. So the vaults ending is just one in a sequence of increasing spikes

Thinking about it, cloaks with actual brands are pretty rare aren't they? I can recall roughly two games games I've gotten a branded not randart/fixedart cloak before all the draconians in zot since I started playing again, while I often see at least one scarf before I'm even entering lair/orc. Even looking at all the poo poo on draconians very few of the enchanted cloaks have egos tied to them, just extra armor.

New evocable idea: Necrophones. Like sack of spiders but it calls a couple random undead and raises the dead around you as a mix of simulacra, spirits, corpses and skeles. Same rate of the battery dying as sacks do of falling apart. Or make it rechargeable and it'd be like the necromantic elemental evoker.

Make it a crank-powered gramophone type thing that you crank up to cause more and more undead will rise (including corpses in LOS) and dance around you to foul up your enemies. It plays on its own for a while before the crank dies and it goes silent, but it's noisy and it goes inert like an elemental evocable afterwards.

It has to be a cellphone so you can have the evoking text be

'you try and call your mummy...',
'Spooky ghosts answer your call instead!'

As far as I know Gooncrawl is right now basically the same as Trunk except Floodkiller reverted some weird changes and mainly returned a bunch of deleted content (PURPLE) from older versions. Also there's a handful extra vaults.

We haven't merged any wild all-new changes (yet)
