lol you've spent too much time in Hong Kong if you think this is a thing in the mainland. Far as I can tell mainlanders intentionally cough with as much force as they can as if they're trying to spread the disease as widely as possible.

he doesn't think that far ahead, he repeats the talking points that he heard 5 minutes ago, so unless someone in the White House or on Fox News is really serious about Chinese employment, the chinese just threw themselves at his feet for the sake of ZTE

LOL if you think people in China hide coldsores . . . I mean areas of the body that heat is trying to escape from because you ate too much Durian.

Nope, they legit think it's an effective way to protect themselves from pollution. Watch people put them on after getting off the subway, leaving a building, or arriving from another city by bus/plane/train. If they cared about spreading germs, they would be doing the opposite, and putting them on when going into those areas. Like was mentioned before, surgical masks were designed to keep doctors and nurses from spitting on and in patients. They're used to stop the spread of easily transmittable illnesses, but nobody outside of a hospital has every used them for that in China.

I tried to explain this to a coworker who was worried about the coal dust flying around in Shenyang, but she just said, "doctors wear them, and they are smart". Explaining that wearing one in an operating room and outside on a smoggy day are very different situations, but she was having none of that.

Here you go - http://www.slate.com/articles/healt..._t_believe.html

Not the nationalists though - the communists. Chiang Kai-Shek famously viewed TCM as fraudulent, and made importing western medicine a major part of his government.

Of course, Mao didn't really think much differently -
"Our nation’s health work teams are large. They have to concern themselves with over 500 million people [including the] young, old, and ill. … At present, doctors of Western medicine are few, and thus the broad masses of the people, and in particular the peasants, rely on Chinese medicine to treat illness. Therefore, we must strive for the complete unification of Chinese medicine." (Translations from Kim Taylor’s Chinese Medicine in Early Communist China, 1945-1963: A Medicine of Revolution.)

yeah but the CCP didn't invent anything except maybe the translation "Traditional Chinese Medicine"

like all these practices existed in some form and Mao promoted actually studying if they were useful or not and codifying them

not like arbitrarily deceiving a billion people into not treating their illnesses

I love the nine dash line because A) it's incomprehensible to me how average people can actually care about a border dispute and B) it's such an incredibly brazen territory grab. So many border disputes are disputes about a border but that one is literally just "lol yeah we're just going to violate all international standards by taking this entire sea just because we're giant assholes :dealwithit:"

Must disagree here.

Not so sure about folding bikes but given that the only emergency exit doors are at the ends of the train, and given that cyclists here love to get on at the ends of the train and place their bikes across the emergency exits, taking the wheel off so it isn't such a barrier in a fire or other emergency is something I like.

I mean I would prefer if the cyclists got onto the carriages that are missing rows of seats so they don't block anything at all, but hey, can't have it all.

Unintended consequence? The reason given for the rule as quoted by the MTR is so that people don't ride their bikes in the stations. Nothing to do with train safety.

Is it incomprehensible though? Hard line nationalism and the victim complex are taught in school from elementary to university, so of course in any dispute China is in the right, and also the victim. When the international court in Hague ruled against China in the China vs. Philippines dispute there was no end to the "everyone is out to get poor, poor China" rhetoric, in my experience even people I considered reasonable and open minded doubled down on the Senkaku and Spartly Islands being Chinese.

Yes, it is incomprehensible to me. I can intellectually follow how countries build up their disputes as political bugbears, but I cannot comprehend on any personal level how broken you would have to be to give a gently caress about a border dispute. The US has border disputes and there is literally nothing anyone could ever do to make me give the world's tiniest poo poo about them.
