Alright, I think I decided on my first two models. I'll be getting the Full Mechanics 1/100 Barbatos Lupus Rex and the 1/144 RG Astray Red Frame to start with, since from every review I've watched they look great out of the box.
I'll probably get a Graze or a Hi-Mock to start practising painting down the line, but I think those two will do nicely for getting my toes wet.

I'm travelling to the states (Dallas) in a couple weeks, and since hobby stuff is pretty loving hard to get/expensive down here I was planning on getting some supplies alongside the kits. So far I have on my list:

X-ACTO Compression Basic Knife Set
Fine line Gundam Markers (Grey and Black)
THE GOD HAND

I was thinking about getting a can of topcoat since it looks like it makes a hell of a difference to the overall look of the kit., and I'll get a self-healing cut mat over here, but anything else I should be getting to start with?

And another question: how feasible is it to hand paint kits? I'll probably want to start painting stuff at some point and I'm still wary about the airbrush + compressor entry price so I was thinking I'd start by hand brushing a couple grunt suits, but the few videos I found of people painting gunpla by hand (ZakuAuerlius and a guy from Ready Snap Go) don't look great precisely, at least compared to some warhammer stuff I've been seeing around.

Thanks for the all the help guys.

You can get a good compressor with a starter airbrush for $110 in the states from Amazon. Handpainting gunpla is awful imo.

You should be right if you start with the 1/100 Barbatos first, as it has instructions in English as well as Japanese and the parts are big and simple.

I handpaint it's fun.

I don't think I could ever get into airbrushing. Too much prep/cleanup time.

I totally acknowledge that handpainting is viable, I'm just intensely bad at it and find airbrushing way faster and gives me consistent results.

Someone should find out if they enjoy building and painting things before spending >$100 on gear not including paints.

Buy a spay can of primer (£4.50), a basic brush (£3.50) and build a wet palette (free when you raid your mam's kitchen cupboards). Start small and unambitious and see how it goes.

I just put that Barbatos together, he is nice and simple and looks good unpainted. The only rough spot are the round drums on the back of his legs, they are very loose when you put them in, and they don't secure until you start putting armor on him, so becareful to not move him alot until you get the back leg armor on.

$56 for clippers is a bit much, you can pick up a good one at a hobby store for like $10 or $15, and a decent one at Wal-mart for like $5 (in the sewing aisle oddly). You just want to make sure you have one side of the clipper flat.

Get a yellow marker for the hands. Otherwise it's a baller kit.

And since you are traveling, make sure you can take home what you buy. Like blades and flammable spray paint or top coat.

Leave it to Brak

Like people have said, check you can take back what you want to buy.

As you're getting God Hands, make sure to buy some cheaper nippers as well that have some meat in the blades.

Basically use the cheap nippers to remove the piece from the sprue, cutting away from the piece so it leaves late nubs on it.

Then use the God Hands to remove the nub as flush as possible to the piece.

God Hands can be quite delicate as the cutting blade is really thin.

WorldIndustries
Dec 21, 2004

I've bought the gundam planet ones for $40 which are similar in quality to the god hands.

They've been pretty amazing but after nearly a year I think the thinner cutting blade has bent slightly.

Fantastic investment though since I've built at least a dozen kits with them.

Forgot topcoat was a spray (got mixed up with the panel line wash) and yeah, can't bring it back. I'll have to see if I can get them over here... Or get my friend to topcoat it for me with his airbrush. Yes Kolo, that means you. :D

sassassin has it; I know I'm going to enjoy putting the kits together but I tend to overcommit when I start out with something so I'm trying to take this slow. Also I'm already waaaaaay over budget with my shopping list for the trip. :v:

2 new modela are gonna be unveiled at a pop-up event in Niigata.

https://twitter.com/HobbySite/status/997054783222464512?s=19

The one on the left is very much the Jagd Doga, possibly MG, which makes sense because they were promising another CCA release after the RG Sazabi. The one on the right is obviously a 00 thing but I can't place exactly what.

Did those 2 mystery Build Diver models from the Shizuoka show get unveiled or are they still secret?

There seems to an overwhelming Gundam bias when it comes to what gets an MG. I think we can now just assume anything cool and Zeonic is just gonna get RE'd.

Also, I'm gonna go ahead and assume Quess Doga will be P-Bandai because A) It fits with RE/100 trends, and B) Shame on you consumer-san for wanting reasonable product line-ups.

Considering the Quess version is the pretty much the same MS with a different gun, I'd say that's a safe bet. Even beyond everyone hating Quess, I mean.

And it's not so much Gundam bias lately as Feddie bias, since GMs and Jegans are getting some much needed love. Dirty Zekes can go back to space!
