My company, Lucerne International, makes cast, stamped and forged components and assemblies for the automotive and heavy truck industries. Our largest contract is for the Jeep Wrangler. As one of the world's only companies producing Class-A forgings, we make the door, hood, windshield and tailgate hinges that sit outside Wranglers like polished jewels.

We're drat proud of this work.

It starts overseas — we have seven plants in Asia, where the hinges are manufactured. They are shipped to the Lucerne plant outside Detroit, inspected, repackaged and sent to another auto supplier for assembly before being shipped to Toledo for installation on the vehicle.

lmao, this guy's company doesn't actually fuckin do anything with American labor. He manufactures the poo poo in China by slaves, ships it here where he wipes it down and puts it in a new box. His company absolutely should go under.

My wife just explained that the auto guys dont warehouse anything as a way to trim their costs i guess. The factories that make the parts are too far away and produce at a set pace and quantity so there is actually a business in purchasing, packaging into smaller units, and funneling and supplying parts to the assembly plants on demand, which is what this business does.

I am not sure how people are missing the rather obvious advantage for e.g. GM to do things the way they are doing: it externalizes the risks, for example in the event of unexpected tariffs making the production setup unprofitable. You can bet they have a contract with a set price for years, and GM is not having to take the blow desperately trying to rejigger things to once again make hinge-making a profitable endeavor.

Quite possibly there is some waste to this, and something like insurance or just more careful planning would work as well or better, but the scenario which motivates the setup is playing out right now.

When I worked in manufacturing they tried to run for a while with no parts in inventory and just make everything on the fly and it sucked. Their solution was to just start buying all the parts they used to make in house and lay off all the machining people, but that didn't work out either because it still takes time to make the stuff and then it had to travel from China. They ended up throwing out all the now-unused machining equipment and used the space for extra parts storage, so trying to run without inventory worked out with them having even more, shittier inventory

their supplier for an important part is going to go bankrupt and it will gently caress up their supply chain, i'm not seeing how this scenario is a win for GM
