Dell used to be the goto company for precanned computers. Your best options were an independent dude with a good local reputation, your nerd friend who builds his own, or Dell. HP made very good printers if you ignored the ink gouging but otherwise made crap. Gateway was...gateway.

But really Dell computers were just everywhere. You could call them up and say "i need like 500 computers for this business" then send a check and have them next week. They'd be solid machines and they'd fix the one or two in the batch that didn't work quickly. I think they ended up becoming a victim of their own success as the quality has been declining for at least a decade. In pursuit of profits use cheaper parts and all that.

Yeah, Dell had a period there where they ignored their fundamentals and tried branching out way too far. They built their success on being flexible with configuration options, fast with delivery, and offering great support options. They started drifting away from that to make more consumer goods (remember Dell printers that are just rebadged Lexmark printers? gah) and as they branched out they lost focus on what made them great. Michael Dell actually bought the company private to try and refocus on what made them great in the past. From what I've read they've had good success with that, but I haven't experienced it myself.

Agreed. Brother is super good for B&W. For color, though, good luck finding something that is both reliable and doesn’t have cartridges that dry up after five uses.

Anecdotally my brother J725W inkjet printer has been faultless for the past 5 years and that includes leaving it turned off for a solid month and it didn't dry up.
The only issue has been that it struggles to feed photo paper or anything thicker than photocopy paper.

Epson and Canon now have eco tank printers where the ink is poured into a tank in the printer. You spend a ton of more money for the printer, but the idea is that the ink never dries up because the tank is sealed and you get thousands of pages of printing so it beats normal ink jets. I haven’t used one myself, but I talked to a guy who did and he loved it and said it worked just like advertised.

That assume someone is willing to pay more than 50$ for their printer (they almost never are).

My solution was to give HP $4.50 a month. My inkjet is now connected to the internet and I'm allowed to print 100 to 200 pages a month and they send out cartridges as needed. It's value is not hearing anguished cries at 9pm because my kids need to print something for school and there's no more ink. Because ink at 9pm means Wal-Mart and that's going to cost $50.

For home use, just stick with a B&W laser. If you really need color just go to Kinko's FedEx Office and make them print it.

Seriously, how often does the home user (excluding someone with a home office type deal) need to print in color? I'm lucky in that I am allowed "limited and responsible" (according to the employee handbook) personal printing at work, and even with that freedom, I print something at work in color maybe once every other month?

It'd only cost me my time and like $10 a year total if I had to go to a printing place/FedEx.

Yeah, making the switch to a laser printer basically solved all my printer worries forever. Those things are basically indestructible, I've got some ancient Laserjet that's easily a decade old by now and it still runs perfectly fine. And of course the toner lasts pretty much forever for home use and is ridiculously cheap compared to ink.

I've had mine for like 8 years now I think.

I've replaced the black cartridge. That's it. The cost per page and long term costs of laser is so much better than ink. Sadly all some people can see is the higher short term cost. But this cheap HP printer is $40!!!!!

Yeah and you'll be feeding $50 ink carts to it by the dozen. Buy the drat laser.

I've met entirely too many people like that. That or people that made a really stupid computer decision that I told them not to then demanded that I "just fix it." For free. Even after I explained that what they're asking me to do is literally impossible. No, I can't make that 10 year old computer you bought at a yard sale for $100 work like new. It won't loving happen. No I can't somehow make your ink jet printer's cartridges last as long as a laser jet cartridge. It can't "just work" that way because you decided that it should be exactly equivalent.

FOR THE LOVE OF gently caress INK JET CARTRIDGES AND LASER JET CARTRIDGES ARE VERY DIFFERENT THINGS AND YES IT'S WORTH IT TO PAY MORE FOR THE LASER JET. You get like 100 pages out of the ink jet cartridge. Maybe. loving things don't last long. A laser jet cartridge can probably run for a few thousand pages so yes it's fine that it costs more. Yes I know that a laser jet can be like $200 it's loving worth it, OK? Just listen to me or stop asking for my advice if you're just going to ignore it and do what you want anyway.

No, I don't care that the salesman at Best Buy told you that the ink jet is just as good because it isn't and he lied to you.

I used to think this way, but my problem is that I need to print like 50 pages twice per year, often with less than a day's notice and I'm a busy guy. It was worth the convenience fee.

(On a similar note sometime you should figure out what it costs to run a washing machine and a dryer and then do the math to figure out how many cycles it takes to make it cheaper to own your own washer/dryer than to go to a laundromat or pay for coin-op. The answer is "a fuckton.")

Even if your time is worthless, the break even point here is within 5 years even for a family of one. A family of 5 could do it in a year. The break even point on a printer is decades away for most people, well past the anticipated life of the device.

The benefit of owning a washer/dryer isn't in cost savings, it's so you can do your laundry in your underwear.

Yeah I don’t think it’d take very long even with only two people - our fancy washing machine cost like $1200 and the laundromat is $4 per small load. At 3 loads a week that’s over $600 which I’m sure could buy a basic washing machine.

Sure there are some (fairly minimal) electricity costs but the there would be car costs driving to a laundromat too.
