They built their success on being flexible with configuration options, fast with delivery, and offering great support options. They started drifting away from that to make more consumer goods (remember Dell printers that are just rebadged Lexmark printers? gah) and as they branched out they lost focus on what made them great. Michael Dell actually bought the company private to try and refocus on what made them great in the past. From what I've read they've had good success with that, but I haven't experienced it myself.

Anecdotally my brother J725W inkjet printer has been faultless for the past 5 years and that includes leaving it turned off for a solid month and it didn't dry up. The only issue has been that it struggles to feed photo paper or anything thicker than photocopy paper.

Epson and Canon now have eco tank printers where the ink is poured into a tank in the printer. You spend a ton of more money for the printer, but the idea is that the ink never dries up because the tank is sealed and you get thousands of pages of printing so it beats normal ink jets. I haven’t used one myself, but I talked to a guy who did and he loved it and said it worked just like advertised. That assume someone is willing to pay more than 50$ for their printer (they almost never are).

My solution was to give HP $4.50 a month. My inkjet is now connected to the internet and I'm allowed to print 100 to 200 pages a month and they send out cartridges as needed. It's value is not hearing anguished cries at 9pm because my kids need to print something for school and there's no more ink. Because ink at 9pm means Wal-Mart and that's going to cost $50.

I'm lucky in that I am allowed "limited and responsible" (according to the employee handbook) personal printing at work, and even with that freedom, I print something at work in color maybe once every other month? It'd only cost me my time and like $10 a year total if I had to go to a printing place/FedEx.

I threw out my printer after dealing with its bullshit for too long. I just print everything at the library now. Which is where I work, so it takes less planning than you'd think. Our printers do better colour than this inkjet bastard could ever have hoped to, as well.

Those things are basically indestructible, I've got some ancient Laserjet that's easily a decade old by now and it still runs perfectly fine. And of course the toner lasts pretty much forever for home use and is ridiculously cheap compared to ink.

Yeah I don’t think it’d take very long even with only two people - our fancy washing machine cost like $1200 and the laundromat is $4 per small load. At 3 loads a week that’s over $600 which I’m sure could buy a basic washing machine. Sure there are some (fairly minimal) electricity costs but the there would be car costs driving to a laundromat too.

My apartment came with a washer and dryer, so I'd be wasting money if I went to a laundromat. Also yeah, I don't wanna have to go to a special place for an hour and a half to wash my clothes when I can just throw a load in while I do other poo poo around the place.
