LastInLine posted:The actual blog post explicitly states that is not the not the case. So, what's not explicitly clear is what happens to people who have Youtube Red who get it for free through GPM. I don't have the grandfathered price, so I pay the normal 9.99 amount. We know if you currently have Youtube Red, you are grandfathered into Youtube Premium. Should I drop my GPM sub now and signup for Youtube Red directly to secure $9.99? Or am I fine to inherit Youtube Premium and my sub will transfer over to that billing at some point in the future? Edit: gently caress it, I switched over to youtube red from GPM just to ensure there's no goofiness involved in grandfathering. 6 and 1/2 dozen of the other right now. bull3964 fucked around with this message at 13:33 on May 17, 2018 |

So.... Gonna lose all my music uploads, then? Christ. What other services allow uploading together with a full streaming service?

What I understand is that if you are a YT Red subscriber, you get YT Premium at the same price level. YT Premium includes YT Music. So, if you are not currently a YT Red subscriber, now is a good time to become one.

Taffer posted:So.... Gonna lose all my music uploads, then? Christ. What other services allow uploading together with a full streaming service? We don't know what's going to happen yet because they've yet to flesh out what the "new" YouTube music will entail and they haven't set a date where GPM is going away. If you sub to YouTube Red, you get GPM. So, it seems advisable at this point if you don't want to spend the extra $2 for ad free YouTube and YouTube originals, to switch your billing over to YouTube red so there's no confusion (HA!) in the future. It's possible that billing though GPM will also let you inherit pricing for YouTube Premium since you have YouTube Red, but they haven't explicitly said so.

Can you explain why you're hosed? It sounds like our best option right now is to quickly change our subscriptions to YouTube Red family plans, so that we get YouTube premium when this nightmare comes to pass. Or am I missing something? Which is a dumb loving loophole to have to jump through. Will I lose all my GPM playlists? How the hell will this work? What a shitshow. I'd run away to Spotify, but I love ad-free YouTube so much. Not feeling like +$2 per month though.

Again, we don't really know what the retirement of GPM looks like or what the new YouTube Music looks like since that won't launch till Tuesday. Switching subs is painless though since your GPM sub doesn't run it until your month ends. So, you can cancel that sub and as long as you sign up for YouTube Red prior to the GPM expiring, you won't have any continuity loss in service. You've just changed how the service is being billed.

my biggest problem is i just dont know what to do. i have a gpm family for $15. we use the hell out of both gpm and ytr. do I just sit and wait until this clears up? at the end of the day it feels like i'm going to be paying more to maintain the same amount of services.

YouTube Red Family is the same price and you get access to GPM that you use now. You should be able to cancel your GPM sub and sign up for YouTube Red and have nothing change for now. What you gain is a higher probability you will be grandfathered into YouTube Premium. I think everyone is in the dark as to how Family plans are supposed to work moving forward, but you can only increase the chances of a favorable outcome by switching subs.

He confirmed to me that you will only receive YouTube MUSIC Premium and not YouTube Premium if you keep your GPM account. You WILL have to move over to YouTube Red (thus paying $2 more and losing grandfather status on GPM) but when Red turns into Premium, you will have YouTube Premium for $10 instead of $12.

Now Google Play Music is claiming that everyone who has GPM will get YouTube Premium for free and NOT just YouTube Music Premium. https://twitter.com/GooglePlayMusic/status/997127746152206337 This directly contradicts their posts on the blog and now a lot of people who had grandfathered in possibly lost the cheaper price for nothing.

Yeah I'm definitely taking the wait and see approach here, they seem even more confused than we are about what they're offering. Maybe it's like a Memento situation where they keep forgetting that they already made an app that does the thing their new app is going to do

Maker Of Shoes posted:why is the thread title not just ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I agree with this post. Right now, it seems only the Drive team has their poo poo together with how their plans will be better in a few months but YouTube's team is... doing this... Also, as I learned from the phone call, YouTube and GPM are both run by YouTube. Google Play support has nothing to do with the subscription to Play Music.

I'm pretty sure they changed it and it originally referred to GPM subscribers getting access to Youtube Music Premium. It might have some grumpy cached data that is causing problems. You can try wiping it: Settings - Apps - Maps: Force stop. Then Storage, clear data, clear cache. Then triple dot menu, uninstall updates. After that, open the app again, it'll be a bit slow to cache the map for the first time. Then go to Google Play - my apps & games and see that updates are available for it. Install these, see if it's better.
