David Corbett posted:Pay no attention to the lacklustre Chungking bombardment campaign behind the curtain. Grey Hunter just sunk another brigade of Americans! At this rate, he's probably going to end up sending more Americans to the briny depths than died in both theatres of the actual World War. Considering where they were and how many of them he killed that convoy was likely carrying what was going to be Manus's garrison. One day of bombing probably just won Grey the invasion.

This is a good point that might be lost on some readers: Big land combats can take a long time to process, like "did the game crash" levels of long. The actual processing of the turn - 99% of what is shown in this LP - usually takes like 10-15 minutes depending on how much you skip and how much stuff is going on. I've had combats with about 100k troops take what feels like a minute or so to process. Chungking has 500k troops so it probably does take a long-rear end time to process. So yeah, GH totally should have been bombarding Chungking for like a year but taking the approach is understandable.

The Allies show some competence again by sailing destroyers into Rabaul. The cruisers give Manus a good battering. Their patrol boats only come out to look at the invasion force, which is enough to drive them off! Curses! We set another troop ship on fire. God drat Dauntlesses. Destroyers are hard to kill sometimes. We finally have some success against their planes. This is the right target today at least! Every hit will help. My troopships take a hit today. A disappointing day, the Yamato driven off my patrol boats! The shame! Not even a kill.

Kibayasu posted:Wait, so the game can just decide for you that your ships don't want to invade something today? it's not completely arbitrary - ships on a Bombardment mission are less effective at surface engagements, and the leader's aggression stat factors into whether they'll decide to keep barreling through

I just skip straight to the combat report for land combats. There might be pertinent info displayed during the combat animation, but I doubt anyone other than the devs know what any of it means. As for actually processing the combat, I don't recall ever needing more than a few seconds for any combat to play out, even with the PC I had 7 or 8 years ago. That includes combats where thousands of AV worth of troops clash. Did you set any of those performance switches when launching the game (-cpu#, -dd_sw)? If not, those may help (documentation is tucked away in a readme file in the game's directory). For the peanut gallery, the game engine was built to run on ancient hardware. Its recommended system requirements include a "1 Ghz CPU" (minimum is a 600 Mhz Pentium II). In short, it's one of those programs where binding its affinity to a single core helps avoid a performance hit because modern technology confuses it.

Yamato is the screen. All the transports hide behind its glorious unsinkable mass as it plows through waves of marine corpses. The cruiser is there as a sort of cattle dog to herd the clueless transports into staying on the right path.

# ? May 18, 2018 19:39 |

the cruisers were out bombarding the airfield obviously so the battleships had to escort the transports or realistically the Yamato was being used as invasion support bombardment, which is in the right place for that, what's missing here are light surface action forces that sail in beforehand and rout the patrols

God drat these destroyers! Today the invasion begins. Wrong way you loving idiots. We're coming for you. We hit another troop ship. This is actually a fairly well put together raid! Boom. Who the hell is sending out loan Kates? Bloody lightnings. Actually, just general hate for all capable fighters. We have troops ashore! Time to see what we can do! A bad day for my subs – we now stand at 63 kills. We need to pull this in now!

How many troops did you get ashore? And is the Yamato going to prove shorebombardment for the invasion? And is your light cruiser hit bad?

About half a division, shore bombardment is support in the main phase, and the cruiser is okay. Also the speed up tips have helped - mainly the menu thing! I feel dumb for not knowing that!

Yay! The cruiser's gonna make it. Hopefully half a division is enough to overrun them no big issue Also randoly can you capture planes? Just if you take it over and there's some active craft there that can't rebase orevacuate, are they automatically destroyed or can you possibly get a few of them?

Op No fighters, it looks like the mere act of landing troops has caused the Allies to withdraw their planes. Most of their planes anyway. I have to assume these guys are on the other side of the island. Down go a couple of Liberators. The first proper day of Operation Charnel House begins. This takes so long for the program to sort our I literally though it had crashed at one point. I Don't think this game is optimized to have a million men fighting in one area. I'm going to go back to bombarding now, as my ability to supply will mean I can replace those hundred thousand casualties more easily than the Chinese can.... Still. This will be the blood bath we were expecting. Hmm, I'm sure I told the men at Manus to attack as well. I need more blood drat it! We lose the Maryland but gain the Queen Elizabeth – I need to pick up the pace on the sinkings! Grey Hunter fucked around with this message at 18:10 on May 19, 2018 |
