The TV show Canada's Worst Driver had another driver that used to do that a few years back, I wonder how many people do it.

Found him. He can't even explain why he holds his breath when he drives through tunnels, he's just always done it.

That tunnel really isn't very long, and yes I did and do play that game with my family because it shuts the kids up on the 2 hour drive home from the beach. I guess if it was rush hour or something or could be longer, but I think you basically have to be an idiot or have an unknown medical issue if you hold your breath until you pass out. I sure wish the kids would pass out holding their breath through the tunnel.

Your'e supposed to lift your feet up when going over a bridge. It's to make the car lighter so that the bridge won't fall down.

Oh christ the dad jokes. There was a road near where I grew up called Gum street, every time we crossed the intersection "Alright guys put your hands on the roof and lift so the car doesn't stick! :imunfunny:"

There are a few one lane underpasses near where my wife used to live that have a "honk horn before entering" sign in front. I assume that would probably apply to narrow tunnels too.

Lava from Kilauea has entered the ocean and now the new hazard is what they refer to as laze - laze is formed when hot lava hits the ocean sending hydrochloric acid and steam with fine glass particles into the air.

Clearly this is fairly localised to the environs around the water/lava interface, but still, acidic vapours with volcanic glass in the air isn't a pleasant way to spend your Sunday morning.

I always assumed this resulted in a lot of steam, not acid and tiny glass shards!

Nature truly is amazing.

Sagebrush
Feb 26, 2012

it does mostly result in steam. the glass is what lava turns into when it cools and the acid vapor is from the chlorine in the seawater.

I hiked Kilauea a year ago and also the lava fields where they enter the ocean, and it was incredible seeing it in person. There are tiny glass filaments everywhere in the lava, and it was sharper than you would expect. There volcano was fairly inactive when I was there so I didn't get to see much molten lava, but where it met the ocean was a huge plume of gas and they kept us a good half mile from it.
