Captain Log posted:With parakeets, I feel like a docile female is a sick female. All the little ladies I've had have been parakeet rage personified. My father and my current female parakeet seem locked in this staring war most days where my father says, "That bird lives to hate things." Our first budgie was female, she was a hoot. Yeah she went into rage mode pretty often but she was also super friendly and personable. She learned to open her cage by dive bombing the door from a perch up above. She would do this to come hang out on our shoulders. Anyway, my Buddy has been really grouchy with me. I think it’s a triple whammy of spring hormones, his recent wing clip and moulting. He bites me if I reach into his cage and doesn’t come out on his own. He still steps up but not without pecking me first. I have him on a stand next to me and he’s fine. He’s got his white noise going and his favorite bell as well.

Last night, Serra came out during an episode of something or another. My father and I, like old grumps, have two recliners in our living room. Serra will bounce back and fourth between us having a blast. So far, she seems to prefer my dad. He brings he lots of treats and due to his retirement, he is always sitting next to het cage in the living room. But Serra seems to understand I'm better at scritches. Last night, she was on Pop and it was time to go back to the cage. She went into cockatiel rage mode at my dad's finger. No real bites, but acting like she would die if she got picked up. I walker shuffled over, stuck out my finger, firmly said, "Step up" and she did without any fuss. The bird knows my dad is a pushover that is slightly scared of her. She is learning!

Potato Salad posted:Must....preen....pins.... I've subscribed to the Mr. Max YouTube and two days ago he got a shower during this moulting season. https://youtu.be/aZmlW6givkI I am posting this here mainly for when the owner starts going after the pins while Max dries off. Pin feathers the size of chopsticks! Then he gets really close and it becomes a GoPro video of a professional feather pillow atopsy (cockatoos are drat fluffy) Remember, always CRUSH, never pull pin feathers. You can do some harm if the pin is not entirely ready to go and make the bird hate you .

I got to hang out with Teeka, my parents' cockatoo, this weekend and lemme tell ya, preening his big ol crest feathers is better than bubble wrap. Also he makes a really happy face and then smears dust all over your clothing, what a bonus!

I just want to come in here to say my juvenile cockatiel's feathers under her beak are the softest soft of anything to ever be soft, and yes I will fight over this claim.

I have really only been super close with dusty Australian parrots, I realize that I have no idea what it's like to pet a non-dusty parrot, they've just sat on me.

I had heard vaguely of this magazine and was sad I never got a chance to read it since it was gone before I had birds. But now it’s back! I’m totally going to pick up the June/July issue https://twitter.com/birdtalkmag/status/998659855450750977

Yay Bird Talk! I used to have a subscription and then when it was discontinued the company managing my subscription decided I would want Cat Fancy instead of just ending my subscription To me it seemed like a really weird choice. Cats eat birds! I don't like cats! If they had switched me to Wild bird magazine I might have kept it...
