I mean I can't imagine a network swooping in to pick up a show and only wanting one season. Sure, it might end up that way if the ratings aren't good, and NBC/Universal makes the money either way, but it's rare.

Butt first, let's
check the feeds.

Yeah, logically it makes more sense that its "We'll give you a chance with a short 6th season, earn a 7th season." NBC doesn't owe the show a final season otherwise. They didn't intend for AfterScrubs to be bad. It just was (I think the second half was good once JD left town, but probably not good enough to swim on its own or life up to the name).

That being said it seems like a bad bet for a 7th season since moving networks probably isn't a great recipe for a boost in the ratings.

I'm glad we're getting more of the show but it does sort of feel like this season is getting us to a natural ending point. Holt going for commish, Amy making sergeant, and of course the wedding. But at least we avoid the danger of another cliffhanger ending being the inadvertent series finale.

I'm pretty sure it was said that the season finale was written as a potential series finale because they knew they were on thin ice for renewal.

Yeah, that's been how this season has felt. But I get why some people were worried given the show's tendency to end seasons that way.

But like, the reality is most TV shows get cancelled and they just have to decide if they feel confident enough to leave things hanging.

Probably important to remember that bad ratings on FOX are still really good ratings on NBC, and B99 apparently wasn't even doing that badly for FOX. I think the most likely thing to go bad is NBC slashing the budget and/or writers leaving, which tends to be what makes second chances go badly.

Unless they get cocky like Arrested Development season 4. It took you YEARS to come back, and you end the new season on a cliffhanger? rear end in a top hat.

Yeah, I know we're getting a season 5. I was just so pissed when season 4 ended like that.

Hopefully it’ll be like Parks and Rec where the penultimate seasoned ended perfectly for the regular run and the true final season was just throwing a bunch of fun stuff up that had no lasting consequences.

I think the fourth season ranked somewhere in the 130s of all network television programming and this season has been doing even worse. It has by no means been a good performer as of late.

And your comparison is the other way around: Bad ratings on NBC (which is neck-and-neck with CBS for the leader) would be killer for Fox, which leads only The CW.
