At first level I'm inclined to be flexible with, say, the Wizard since they only get one weapon proficiency and a -5 penalty on all other weapons - seems letting them learn to use a light crossbow rather than a sling (or thrown daggers - something that seems to me to be far more difficult than learning to shoot with either a short bow or a light crossbow), but less so with the thief since they get a good selection of weapons and a lower penalty. In play, I'm not sure - maybe it would depend on the weapon, the class and the level? re: your smart fighter, that's the sort of thing that you lose when you don't roll stats. Sure, you can make a smart fighter with an array or point buy, but you're being worse at your core function, Fighting, by doing so. One of the balance options between rolled and array I've heard (in one of the threads here) is you get a 16 and a 14, then roll the remaining 4. Assign to suit.

Not a bad option - in 2e I'd be tempted to go with something like 4d6 drop the lowest, in order, swap two stats of your choice - a little more control than just 3d6 in order and you're more likely to actually get a 15 and a 14, but at the same time you still get other stats in unexpected locations.

I ran DCC for the first time using the Sailors of the Starless Sea funnel, and it was extremely good. 8 characters lost overall, the biggest kill was 4 at once when entering tower H from a heated battle. Last death was someone trying to slide down the side of the ziggurat in a polished brass bowl and breaking his neck.

hectorgrey posted:That's fair - I mean, the Fighter is supposed to be the best and most flexible combatant. Maybe check out the rolling method from AD&D 1e's Unearthed Arcana? It has a different number of d6s you roll for each stat depending on class. You roll 9d6 and keep three for your most important stat. Then you do 8d6 for the next most important, 7d6 after that, etc until you roll 3d6 for the final one. It significantly weights stats to the class you want to play, but it does result in very powerful characters. You can always lower the top end of the chain to start at 6d6 or something if you want. This method is nice if you want to pick the class and then roll for it. Nickoten fucked around with this message at 05:32 on May 20, 2018 |

I keep dreaming of getting enough people together to run Night Below. If I already have the 2e core books (DMG, MM, 2xPHB) is there a compelling reason to look at retroclones, or would I be best off just just running with regular 2e? The biggest thing I can think of is that I seem to remember fighters being kind of dull RAW.

Stock standard 2e is perfectly fine - the most I'd modify, for any old-school game really, is the attack roll to make it "ascending", but you don't need a whole new system for that.

Hot Springs Island is a beautiful piece of work and it's a bit of a shame that I'm so late to the party and still able to buy the hardcovers. It should absolutely be sold out.

So hey, we had the first session of our Godbound campaign last night and it's off to a good start! I did that thing though where I spent a whole bunch of time coming up with an interesting and complex scenario but totally forgot to give my players a starting scene of any kind. I got it all going, at least... A quick vignette with some (laughably weak) bandits in a forest just to see how they reacted to it (a ... um ... cornucopia of eggs and healing all their sick and injured, apparently?) and then arriving right in time for an informal council meeting where they could meet and greet the major players in the town.

Halloween Jack posted:There are all these games that recognize that random-rolling is obsolete in later editions of D&D, but feel obliged to come up with ever more permissive versions of it instead of just getting rid of it. Why not let 17, 16, 15, or whatever, and be done with it? I don't know man, why are you asking me? It's a method I thought would be helpful for someone who explicitly talked about liking randomized stats.

For folks who are into Godbound, it looks like Lexicon of the Throne will be available in the first half of July. The index and relevant post are here. Looks like it includes balance and creation discussion of Strifes as well as Words, which is nice.

A Strange Aeon posted:What's the deal with Hot Springs Island? Just a solid product? Essentially, yeah. A system-neutral hexcrawl through a tropical island that once served as an Elven kingdom before they hosed around too much. Now it's full of competing factions looting the hell out of the elven ruins and the island's natural resources. Good art, lots of opportunity for adventure. Definitely an OSR highlight.

I'm sick of hot springs modules, they just chuck them in the middle of campaigns so they can show the fighter without any armor on

A Strange Aeon posted:What's the deal with Hot Springs Island? Just a solid product? Its shtick is that it's (by all accounts) is a pretty good hex crawl that comes with a second book that's an in-world guide to the island that the players consult in character.

Would anyone mind if I started a new thread? We're over a hundred pages now, plus the current OP is six years old, with the OP banned and obviously not coming back. I'd like to update the clones list, add some good blogs, and so on. I have an OP, but wanted to check with the thread first.

Just include a link to it here so I can bookmark the new one. An updated OP with an active poster sounds like a good idea to me.

For clones, there's Taxidermic Owl Bear's list, which may not have been updated for a couple years, or there's Ynas Midgard's list which is updating as much as people tell him to update the list and it's considerably larger and includes links as to where to download or purchase the product.

I'd been meaning to buy The Dark of Hot Springs Island ever since I saw it on Questing Beast's channel - just pulled the trigger. This will be the first hex crawl I've ever run - any tips or resources y'all would recommend for hexcrawl sessions?
