Help a hero out!
It's certainly not a good look and implies the creators just sorta think all Asian stuff is the same.

I'm usually the first person to silently roll my eyes at people who buy games "for the minis", but I'm intrigued by the wooden coins they promise. At least if they have nicer graphics than the cardboard coins shown. Game looks ok, I think.

So what we messed up was LOS. I missed the rule about anything using priority target needing a straight line. So that does change a lot. I'm doing a solo play today, so howfully that puts a better spin on it.

But the 3 monsters weren't all at once. It was just first explore = monster, kill. Explore again, monster, kill. Get to pre-setup resource spot. Rolled a bunch of attention. Bad luck, maybe. So by that third monster, we had 2 xp, which is only +1 stat. Knowing the right LOS rules, we could have ran away. But that scenario only has 7 turns and we still need XP to get our workers moving fast enough to deliver and still be able to deal with attention monsters (attention seems to drop really frequently).

I really do want to like this game. But it seems so stacked against you, ramps up like crazy even without random pulls.

It won't if you forget that you use at least two heroes when playing solo. :eng101:

Your experience isn't truly representative, though. I find that Gather scenarios are much harder than the other kinds because they demand that you specialise your worker instead of your hero, and they're also not scaled properly for less than four players. When I play with new people I usually use Desecrated, the easiest combat scenario, but you could as easily jump into Story 1 if people know the rules.

Zark the Damned posted:

Desectrations. Assuming all 6 of those controlled gates are desecrated areas already you'd only need one other area (two without high priests) to hit 26.

No joke, you just rarely see anthropomorphic animals in a fantasy universe outside of generic European analog or Southeast Asia.

Chicken Caesar is such an easy pun that I’m surprised it didn’t happen sooner, but the only Chicken Caesar I’m interested in is Sir Digby Chicken Caesar.

E: really it just speaks to a greater issue that the only fantasy that’s easily packaged and sold is generic European and mystical Far East.

And how the hell did you even potentially generate 26 as YS? 6 Cultists controlling gates plus a High Priest is only 19. You could capture four Cultists and leave the gates empty, I guess, but that's ... unlikely.
Just double checked the rulebook and you can definitely get above 20 power.

And yeah, 6 gates, 6 cultists and a bunch of Desecrations.

They put together a TTS module and I've played it a couple of times. The card balance is all over the place and it suffers from the same problems as most market row games, in my opinion. There aren't many actual choices to make, and the winner is generally the person who had a valuable card show up when it was their turn to draft the most times. I haven't tried the solo mode.

Well, there's a lot of Comic Sans in it, which makes some people irrationally angry.

This just came through the ole 18xx mailing list:

quote:

I proudly anounce the beginning of the kickstarter campaign of 18Lilliput:

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/22630337/18lilliput

18Lilliput is an 18xx card game - small but beautiful.
You'll find a details review here:
https://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1991298/18lilliput-preview-its-small-its-handy-its-quick-a

Lonny Orgler

quote:

In 18Lilliput players try to build up the best railroad network by using action cards and get richer than the other players.

Every player starts with a railroad corporation and a character which gives him a special ability during the game. The game is limited to 8 rounds of play, and every round, each player may select two action cards from a common pool to undertake activities on behalf of his railroads.

These actions include laying new track, upgrading track, buying trains, buying new shares or opening a new company, or simply getting money into one’s personal cash or into a company’s treasury.

After the Action Selection phase, each company runs its trains and earns money, which can be withhold for future investments (trains, track, railheads), or paid out to the shareholders. This decision will influence the share price value of the company in question.

At the end of the game, the player with the most cash plus the value of his shares wins.

18xx players will find a lot of used and tried mechanisms, as well as many new elements, mingled into a quick and exciting card game.

60min 18xx? Yeah that's a pledge. I mean Rolling Stock looks rad but it's still like 4 hours. Lonny Orgler has like 9 18xxs (18CZ, 1880: China, 1844/1854, etc) under his belt too (and Russian Railroads), so certainly a designer to trust.

And speaking of 3 player trick takers: Yokai Septet is a reprint of 7 Symbols, and 7 Nations, which is a very highly regarded trick taker from Japan. There's a KS for it running now: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ninjastargames/yokai-septet

It's 5 missions with text interludes. So mission --> text adventure where you can make an attribute check to gain fame --> text adventure with attribute checks for fame and maybe gain an ally --> next mission, and so forth and so on. About the same length as short campaigns like Bespin Gambit.

Can 18XX really be distilled down to a card game and still deliver an actual 18XX experience? 60 minute version sounds like something I’d try but not if it’s not really representative of the genre.

"being" a corporation is a big tip off that it's missing a good chunk of the 18xx formula.

Are the Onitama expansions worth getting or do they just clutter up the main game?
