I've commented on Will Wight's Cradle series in this thread in the past, and a number of people have read them and mostly enjoyed them. Cradle is a series of short (90,000ish words) novels that are based on Chinese xianxia concepts but are written with a Western audience in mind, digitally self published through Amazon. I've read a number of Amazon self published authors, and Will is EASILY the best of the bunch that I've read, across all his works and not just the Cradle series. A week ago, Will announced on his blog that the 5th book in the series, Ghostwater, is getting surprise released on June 1st - surprise because his fans thought he was writing a book in a different series and weren't expecting this book until 2019. Today, Will announced that book 1 in the series, Unsouled, will be available for free download on Amazon until Friday. I encourage anyone who likes Chinese xianxia stories to give these ones a shot. If you like book 1, the rest only cost $5 or are free if you're a kindle unlimited member.

Regardless of what else happens in the future, Ling Qi definitely needs to stop living in the same house with Meizhen next year. That's gotta be a completely impossible environment to ever get past your crush in (for Meizhen that is).

Gu Tai's homesteading offer though was pretty much everyone's second choice, it just had to compete against "Heavily implied Sect Elder Apprenticeship" and "Become the left-hand of a future Ducal Title Holder". But yeah, the spreadsheet nonsense is something handled by a small portion of the playerbase, and it's a sign on how the numbers and the base system picked doesn't really scale very well--that's why they're going more narrative after the Outer Sect Tournament.

I'm honestly curious how in the gently caress this story is ever supposed to end, or even get remotely far into Ling Qi's cultivation. Like, at some point we're going to need multi-year time skips or something, since it seems to be the case that this sort of week to week progress just isn't a thing beyond green/bronze (even green/bronze seems long enough that it's doubtful Ling Qi will pass it in the next year or so, from what I understand). I guess to some degree you can just increase the vote periods from weeks to months to years, but the journey ahead is so long that it seems very unlikely to ever reach the point where Ling Qi is actually in the upper echelons of the empire. edit: The reason I assumed rejecting Cai was the more obvious option is that, from a cultivating perspective, it seems pretty clear that apprenticeship to moon Elder guy (Jiao? forget his name) was the best option. Not only is he a powerful Elder, but he's directly connected to the Great Spirit that Ling Qi has a very strong connection to. Also, while being with Cai has more potential for political influence, it's political influence in a preset direction/alignment that doesn't seem to fit much with Ling Qi's character/personality up until this point. Cai has the potential to be an interesting character, though (and the guy who writes this has impressed me enough with some of the other characters that I doubt I'll be disappointed). It got pretty hard to read towards the end (particularly, all the side stories dealing with the aftermath), but I finally finished reading arc 2 of Honzuki!  Just in time too; there's enough arc 3 manga chapters currently out to accompany my reading for maybe 6 chapters at least, so I won't get too lost reading descriptions at the start. I'm excited now that I'm entering what I hear is more GoT-esque territory where the cast balloons up exponentially and Maine starts getting embroiled in politics. I just hope the increased focus on politics doesn't mean increased difficulty in reading for me though

I've given a couple more popular web novels a go. King's Avatar is the number one WN in the webnovel.com rankings. It's a, sigh, MMO esports novel. So, this guy, who's the best and most skilled and most admired MMO player ever gets screwed over by getting booted from his MMO PVP esports team, with his precious super-overleveled and overgeared character remaining with the team as their property, so he gets a job at an internet cafe, makes a new character at this MMO's conveniently just-launched brand new 10th anniversary megaserver and starts owning it through his combination of inhuman twitch skills (the fictional MMO in this game having a higher twitch skills ceiling than even real world competition-level fighting games), genius theorycrafting and a custom crafted OP weapon he saved up. Now, tbh, there's nothing wrong with the concept of an esports novel. There are baseball novels and chess novels and poker novels, why not an MMO novel, yeah? I'm not a big MMO fan but I've enjoyed a few and I was okay with reading a story about playing one. My problem with this story is mainly how loving padded it is. If this was a tennis novel, the author would describe every single ball strike in every single match he plays in, including practice, with worshipful reactions of the multiple observers after every single move. Here, we get to read about every single dungeon he clears and every raid boss fight lasts multiple chapters and I think by the time I quit 90~ chapters into the story I think, like, less than a week went by in the story? On the positive note, I guess, the protagonist is Buddhist-chill and is generally a helpful and pleasant person, the other characters are alright as well and the story so far didn't really have any of the typical webnovel cringe poo poo. I might give the chinime a look, if only to see if they've condensed it at all. ------------------------ The Strongest System is a rather formulaic xianxia novel. Transmigration into the typical world of daoist sects and cultivation, check. Hero gets a rpg-like system that makes him crazy OP, check. A shameless greedy cringelord protagonist, check. There is a lot of pervy cringe humor revolving around, for example, crotch trauma, non-consensual boob enlargement and superviagra pills and the protagonist, quite frankly, is a sociopath who only ends up not victimizing innocents through author fiat. It has a lot of similarities to A Will Eternal, but it's written worse. That said, I am ashamed to admit I was still entertained enough by it to read the entirety of the chapters that I originally downloaded. At least, unlike King's Avatar, the plot moves fairly quickly and the humor is kinda entertaining in that 'watching East Asian comedy in mute fascination and horror' sort of way. I, sigh, might even finish reading this - but perhaps when it's fully translated.

King's Avatar is super chill, but it's not something I can binge read, because so much stuff is draaaaaaaaagged out super hard. I enjoy the humor in it most of the time and it really doesn't feel like a CN story.

Yeah, end of part 2 is one of the biggest emotional points of the series, and where Honzuki went from merely being good to being one of my favorites. The cast really does explode in part 3, with earlier characters taking a smaller role. If you can find a character relationship map/family tree thing without getting spoiled by fanart I'd recommend it. It might also be good to stay vaguely familiar with the gods/mythology stuff. I skimmed through it the first time, but they reference it all the time, including sometimes dropping stuff that Maine doesn't understand or interpret properly, leaving it to the audience to read between the lines. I still found it pretty readable in raw form, but I'd hate to have to try to translate it. Everyone speaks in super formal Japanese except when they don't, and it's hard to communicate those subtleties in English.

Go with Britishisms and Received Pronunciation. That's the closest I can think of to super politeness speak relative to American English where it won't come off as horribly stilted or archaic.

I largely skimmed over it when it first appeared and was glad when blastron's translations finally got around to that long creation myth; please tell me I don't have to memorize their lesser pantheon of gods and that I only need to know those main ones (I have a hard enough time remembering which of those are which because they translate to possibly real, possibly fake Germanic names which I have just as hard a time remembering).

I tried reading the Honzuki raws a while back, but found that the effort involved just made it difficult for me to enjoy. I recently finished my first "consume a long piece of Japanese media" project in the form of playing Cold Steel 3, and I think what made it tolerable is that it alternated between reading and gameplay, so I was able to at least rest my brain periodically. I might give Honzuki a shot again sometime soon, since playing CS3 acquainted me with a poo poo-ton of more commonly used kanji (which is basically the #1 barrier to me reading Japanese, by a long shot).

It's only in the later bits where you have running gags like (extremely minor spoiler but just in case)everyone using flowery language to talk about sex and only Maine not realizing it. It's been a year or so since I last read Honzuki, but IIRC if there's anything in the myth worth remembering specifically it's the stuff involving Mestionora (メスティオノーラ) and Erwermen (エアヴェルミーン) That'll be on the test. Also maybe Gedulighi (ゲドゥルリーヒ) and Ewilebe (エーヴィリーベ) since they get referenced a lot. There's a Japanese Wiki you can visit that has all the god stuff sorted, but I can't really recommend it since it does have some spoilers here and there. As for the names, the wiki does have a page specifically for trying to figure out the roots/romanizations of every name in the series, with mixed results. You're correct that most names are either actual German names or random German words haphazardly mashed together. EDIT: So long as I'm at it, here's a copy of the family tree I used most as a reference during part 3. It's nice because it actually has some illustrations as visual aides and isn't just a wall of Japanese text like the more complete character relationship charts here and here. The spirit stones remove ads, they arent required to read at all. Sure there annoying ads that take like 30 seconds, but its a small wait compared to a chapter. Also, the ads only show up on the most recent couple of chapters. If your reading the backlog you dont even need to pay spirit stones.

Nah, that's how it worked at the start, but more and more of their series have become "premium" series, which are locked to one chapter a day becoming readable without paying, no unlocking through ads allowed. Given the minimum release rate is double that or higher, a premium series will quickly build up a larger and larger stockpile of locked chapters - Release that Witch is up to 140+ already at this point, for example.
