This one’s a bit more dangerous because we’ve got all 4 Anticross bosses bearing down on us and they’re all big, beefy bruisers – Titus and Claudius won’t hang back for long, either, so you’ll need to contend with them as you build morale. Tiberius still has his many debuffs, so be especially wary of leaving anyone who can’t dodge in his range, as you don’t want them to be sitting ducks for all the Destroyer Robos and Anticross. Your guys are at about the point where they might be starting to learn Confuse (かく乱), so it might be good for you to pop it when you’re in the thick and morale isn’t quite there yet. Approach carefully and as a group, because letting someone get mobbedfu is a recipe for death here, and take out the Anticross one by one – they all got decent levels of Prevail and you don’t want them all running it. Jack Smith, only he’s a tank now and has Infight and does a lot more damage. His weapons all have S ranks on land, so approach with flying units or make sure your guy can dodge. Best attack is range 1-3, so see if you can’t attack from beyond that if you’re looking to save on SP. And, boom, Arnie just unlocked his upgrade and jumped straight to the front of the pack as one of the best units in the game: the Odyssea hits like a truck, it’s very survivable, it covers its ranges nicely, it regens 90 EN per turn just by itself, it flies – it’s got it all. Better yet, the bot now takes a page off Baldios’ book, in that it can just teleport when moving around, so enemies and rough terrain won’t slow it down. Best attacks – Hell Stringer and End of Reverse – are point-blank range, but that annoyance is mitigated by the warp skill. Mind you, do note that UX follows L’s rules when it comes to combinable units: they’ll deploy solo and you’ll need to plug them together during the mission. So, either make sure the combined units works nicely by itself (give it All Attacks), or do what I did in L and set the Lyras with another unit’ll that get plopped onto another (the R-Daigun sounds good, whenever the Nova can do that again) – once combined, the main units will still have a partner and you won’t be left with anyone running solo. Well, that certainly showed how powerful the Black Lodge is when they go all out. On the other hand, I think I understand the reason why this game was written off as terrible for so long. His name is Jin. Not only did he get a few scenes of doubt just so that he could throw them away offscreen before they mattered, but it feels like his entire subplot could be short-circuited in 5 seconds. "I've given myself to fate." "No way we're letting humanity go extinct!" "I don't care. ...Wait, what?" ...At which point he either realizes that his great rivalry isn't worth a penny, or he doesn't and gets written off by the UX as not worth sparing.

I'm glad the Black Lodge aren't just a bunch of flunkies that get owned while their boss cackles evilly in the background. The Odyssea is cool. The walking animation looks a little awkward, but I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of the attack animations. Nice BGM as well. I like Saya and her little arc, but saying that her facsimile of a life only now has gained a soul makes me raise an eyebrow. Like I get that they're saying she now actually wants to live instead of going through the motions, but sheesh that's pretty rude.

If you remember his past exchanges with Ayul and Novel, especially at mission 25, his goal is only one thing: bringing about Ayul's "awakening" and helping her grasp that "Beginning of Life" deal (which Rich also mentioned in today's flashback). Now, barring some bits, I'm pretty much blind here as per the OG plot, so I can only speculate, but I believe Jin sees his rivalry with Arnie as something of a means to an end - as he said, he'll use anything he can to bring about Ayul's awakening, which is what his destiny entails (?). Thus, he's hounding Arnie to help Ayul buff up and get to that point (even when, as we know, using Novel-Brand Accelerated Particle Engines will kill you dead if they're not controlled flawlessly). Whatever purpose Ayul's awakening'll serve, that's for us to figure out later. So I feel like now is time to mention that Demonbane has three routes. What this game and the anime follow is the "Al Azif" route, which leads to this, Al dying to protect Kurou from Anti-Cross. In the Ruri Hadou route, at this time Kurou gets knocked into a coma, and Ruri has to step up as the pilot of the Demonbane in his stead (For a fight) We also learn more about Kurou's backstory and the overall plot of the Demonbane world. I'll be flat honest I never played the Leica route, but it's probably important to bring up, since I don't think the game is going to, that Leica has a far bigger role in the VN as the Superhero Metatron. Both the Metatron subplot and her related villain character Sandaphlon just... don't seem to exist, and I don't know why because they were kinda a big deal.  Of all the changes the anime made from the VN I still don't get why they removed Metatron and Sandaphlon and just made Lecia... well basically a cheer squad.

Something I forgot to mention in the previous chapter/had to look up: in the Burn recruitment cutscene if you don't have both Karen and Shouko, I believe their lines get skipped even if you have the other - at least solo Shouko's does. Similarly here, you can still trigger the battle conversation with Master Therion, but in this case the unrecruited character won't speak. Which...given Karen's intro bit makes it just a bit confusing that they know he's addressing them all. I actually asked a friend to translate it for me because I was interested in why he'd be talking to Burn and Shouko. I liked the start of this. Nice way of Kaido and Magami looking at Richard's death. The rest of the mission was great as well, as I expected it to be. I didn't see the end of this coming when I played, but had a general idea of what was going on. Lots of interesting things being said in this mission, too... Odyssea has a couple annoyances with it. First is that it's a combiner, so you need to take up two deployment slots on it. Though that said pretty much everything gets Attack-All by default, so even if it goes it alone, it might actually end up a bit stronger against mooks without a partner to slow it down - also especially good for characters who need high killcounts. Though that said, fighting mooks is usually done at the start of stages, i.e. where they're at their slowest. Short of enemy reinforcements, of course. The other annoyance is that there's plenty of competition for point-blank finishers, but it's strong enough to consider leaving a space open for.

I could also give him Attacker, but I've been constantly struggling with the thought of whether or not to feed that to Shouko and offset her lack of Holy Warrior. Problem is you only ever (no extras in NG+ either) get ONE of these big Skill Parts if you don't do the DLC - Attacker, for instance, you get when Burn survives. And our next mission comes as a request from the Frontier Fleet – straight from the President’s Office. Our target is a Boddole Zer-Class fortress, which the Vajra have used as nesting grounds. A what now? As Klan tells, it’s a type of Zentran fortress with several hundred kilometers in length. If the Vajra are nesting there, who knows how many we’ll find. Worse, according to intel sent by the Frontier, said fortress is slowly headed towards Earth – should it make it here, the damage will be immense. But, of course, there’s the matter of the Black Lodge and their Cthulhu-ball right on top of Arkham City. As Cao Cao notes, if we leave here, they’ll get on the offensive again. Only option Sumeragi sees is to split the team in half: one to stand guard in Arkham, one to clear out the Boddole Zer Fortress. Arnie sees no problem with that assessment, figuring Richard would’ve agreed with that suggestion. The more ground-combat oriented units will stay in Arkham: which makes for the WSO, the Elshank, the Fafners, the SD Gundams, Heroman and the Classic Aura Battlers. Of course, Kurou’ll also be staying here since, as Ruri points out, the Demonbane’s immobile. Everyone else is headed up top. But what about Arnie and Saya?  Time for another route split, but this one’s very short – only a single mission. Participate in the Vajra Mop-Up Operation Wings of Rean SEED Destiny 00 Gundam Dancouga Nova Fei-Yen Linebarrel Macross Frontier Secret Alert! x4 Take this route if you’re on track for these secrets: Linebarrel’s (4th step), 00 Gundam #1 and #2 (4th and 2nd step, respectively), Macross F (4th step). Stay and Defend Arkham City Dunbine Tobikage Fafner Demonbane Heroman SD Gundam Mazinkaiser SKL Secret Alert! x4 Take this route if you’re on track for these secrets: Demonbane (6th step), Fafner #2 (2nd step), Heroman (3rd step), Tobikage #1 (6th step). Also have both these route flags raised, so I can keep whichever I want. I reckon that’ll be the Arkham route, simply because it’s got more series I enjoy.  Pick the space route and Arnie figures they ought to head up there as, judging from the sheer scale of the fortress, we could use as many extra units as we’ve got. Saya’s fine with the idea, so Jeffrey commands the troops to set off immediately. Mishima agrees with him in that they’ve never seen a bigger swarm than the one nesting in the Boddole Zer – but that is precisely what makes this such a major opportunity. What it all comes down to is Fold Quartz, a mineral capable of relaying thoughts across time and space… and the things can only be found with the Vajra, as it’s inside their bodies that the mineral’s refined. In that case, Howard presumes he has a plan for them to prevail against such odds and, naturally, Mishima does. You see, he’s taken care to match the day of the operation with Ranka Lee’s concert. Not that the thing’ll move with Al gone, but Ruri at least wants it ready to go – her grandfather would’ve done so. Chiaki and Denton’ll see to it, and Joey sees that even in this seemingly desperate situation, no one’s given up hope yet. So he’ll continue to believe that Kurou’ll recover from his injuries and find a way to fight with us again.  Again, Arnie asks Zhou Yu to teach him how to tactics.  : Gathered disciples! So we can go up to space to deal with dumb space bugs and get saddled with Kira... OR we can stay on earth and avenge our fallen comrade by carving up elder gods? Jeez, I wonder which one appeals more... Also, due to the way this game stacks on kills, despite LITERALLY NEVER USING KIRA OR ATHRUN They were at the top of my kill charts on my final playthrough.

Seems like very few games are willing to pull and Aerith these days. Or, ever, honestly. Whenever a character gets killed off or leaves you always seem to wind up with a statistically identical character filling the gap. So goodbye

Reading this and watching a playthrough of SRW X back to back is such a weird experience to me This game manages to weave the series plots togheter almost seamlessly, making full use of the opportunity to change and twist stuff, and its og designs for characters are rather good if generic, same for the mech. But its og plot has been a big generic mess so far. Meanwhile X absolutely sucks at working the diferent series togheter or making use of opportunities to mess with the plot, to the point where I never feel like the individual series are happening in the same game at times; its og designs are out there but for the most part awful, same for the mech (thouh its attacks are somewhat cool) But its og plot is surprisingly well made and thought out. I cant quite describe it as well as I feel it, but its like X and UX are mirrors of each other, though I think UX comes out on top so far. For me it also applies to subjective stuff like the series selection, I like most of the X selections while disliking most of UXs... though UX comes out on top again, as it is actually making me care about and like characters I would otherwise hate (such as shinn as the top shining example) While, again, X is amost the oposite and I just feel frustrated with or downright dislike characters I otherwise love.

It’s lost all of its special abilities, and the only attacks available are the Vulcans, the melee attack and Atlantis Strike. Worse yet, it’s not regenerating MP anymore since Kurou lost the grimoire skill. You can refill its stocks via the Resupply command, but Kurou’ll need to be a lot more careful with his attacks now. Elsa’s replaced Al as the subpilot now, with her spirits being Accelerate, Alert, Iron Wall and Assail. On the other hand, the thing has plenty of range, with his Darts Spear and EM Pulse Cannon carrying the Armor Down and Mobility Down, respectively. Keep an eye out for that, and you’ll be fine. The Zhang Fei thing was a neat bit, especially well put together IMO because you're likely to see it given the route split. Shame he was still underleveled for me. Dr. Minami vs. Dr. West is great. One thing that did trip me up: needed to figure out who Caligula was for the secret, heh. Meanwhile on the other side you have Macross Frontier, bleh. A bigger strike against it than usual since it's not immediately following up on the plot that just happened. Bunch of typos I noticed I'm too lazy to quote, and also because there's a bunch. And Dr. West is definitely way too ripped for a nerd. every dude except for Claudius is ridiculously ripped, though to be fair Kurou was basically an Ex-Mage until Al literally fell into his lap it's implied the reason he stopped being a mage and dropped out is because he had the misfortune of witnessing Wilbur Whateley's true form while studying at Arkham and kind of broke

When he puts his mind to it, Dr. West will get the job done. When he lets his ego take the wheel, you get Demonbane's primary comic relief character. That's basically Mad Science 101, though. Whatever you make is a crapshoot between something goofy and something utterly terrifying. There is no middle ground.

So hey lets go over Kurou's new design now.  Realising that without Al he can't really do the whole "Fight Anticross" thing, he's still willing to put himself on the line till the very end, knowing that the Hadou manor is going to be attacked again, he puts all his skills and knowledge as a magus together to make him a lethal weapon, from replica's of the Scimitar of Barzai to bullets engraved with Cthugha and Ithaqua. He builds himself up to be unstoppable on foot. Of course, that's on foot, and Anti-Cross still has Grimoire powered Deus Machina's. Dr. West does the same dealie here where he sets up the Demonbane to work without Al. I believe in the VN it's Caligula alone who's stomping about the city and when it looks completely and utterly hopeless. "From the Hate-Scorched Sky!" Now, as in the game, Kurou has no weaponry on the Demonbane than its starting kit, so he was already hopelessly outmatched when one remembers he was struggling to fight Claudius and Caligula when he had all his weapons. On top of that, the Demonbane can't teleport anymore, meaning to launch it, they have to use the catapult they planned to launch it from anyway... which I believe totals it in one use. Or two, I think it was two. See the way he beats Caligula is using the Catapult to launch the Demonbane, and then delivers an Atlantis Strike through the Kraken's guard via sneak attack. It's the only fight done with the bare-bones Demonbane (And almost totals it) but it's a really awesome moment. All of them, the turning point for the routes is Kurou's defeat at the hands of Anticross. The results are Al is killed (Al route) Kurou is put into a coma, Ruri takes his place as Demonbane pilot for one battle (Ruri Route), and I still don't know what happens on the third route. I never played it.
