The big difference between now and 1860 is if the red states left and took nukes with them we would just end up with the most ambitious war crossover ever of civil war 2.0/cold war 2.0

Lol if you think the national guard wouldn't occupy a state house before it had an opportunity to even discuss a secession vote

Back in 1860, whether you lived in a slave state vs a free state defined your entire way of life. Urban vs Suburban vs Rural is the new divide

Mycroft Holmes posted:uh, it isn't 1860 anymore. if the south tries to succeed there are a lot of black people who won't be too happy and are now in a position to do something about it. There weren't many people who were happy about the South seceding the first time. Southern Unionists were instrumental in giving vital information to northern armies.

I do love the argument that the Confederacy had popular support. That sure checks out with 39% of the population in chains.

General Dog posted:Th rural/urban thing is true, but what does gerrymandering have to do with it? I was referring to the fact that in most states, whichever party is in control comes down to gerrymandering of districts just as much as population tendencies. Soyboys live in Texas as much as CHUDs live in New York, and the population breakdown comes down to whether you live in an urban or rural area. What these civil war 2 people aren't taking into account is it would be a war between the large cities and the smaller settlments, not the red states vs blue states Dreddout has issued a correction as of 03:03 on May 28, 2018 |

Yeah that applies for states where there's a pretty thin margin between the two, but there are most definitely solid Red and solid Blue states. Gerrymandering doesn't cause a state to go 30-40 years with the same party in the governor's mansion, or cause one candidate to get 60%+ in the presidential election. But you're right, the most solidly red states are the ones that are mostly rural, and vice-versa.

Oklahoma is the most solidly red state in the union, but the state actually had a majority of voters registered as Democrats until the early 2000's. The Democrat demographics are still largely around, but they have been systemically disenfranchised to the point of not even bothering to register to vote.
