re: the "virginity is an axis of oppression" reddit post

Why does Chapo have so many fans that are so obviously the guy Amber complains about who volunteers to DJ a DSA gathering and exclusively doesn't play "music girls like?" Every time there's something about the hosts hinting that like, cultural appropriation is a bad idea, or maybe representation in media isn't in the top 100 issues facing us, there's a meltdown and struggle session. Every time Nick Mullen does something people are just bamboozled that this guy could possibly be in the Chapo orbit.

I hear it listening to podcasts too, the type of guys that RedLetterMedia's "Nerd Crew" videos make fun of LOVE to mention how they listen to Chapo. Guys like Alex on GiantBeastCast who spends every episode trying to do damage control for videogame companies and explain why the bad things they did weren't done as evil as assumed love to think they are true hardcore socialists and would be riffing right there along with Matt and Felix.

It's just weird, I've never seen something that was so obviously "mean internet" as Chapo convince so many "normie" regular Democrat-voting liberals that these were "their guys." It's like every time Amber talks about the "wreckers" and how we can't win if these people are the voice of our movement, another 1000 wreckers sign up to patreon to go, WELL ACTUALLY

Honestly it's probably because the Chapo guys are entertaining and together they have a natural charisma when talking about important issues that people who don't actually care to protest or join a movement but like to read the occasional article and say "drat, why is society so bad these days" gravitate towards.

Everyone is feeling the result of late capitalist alienation that the hosts of this show always go on about. They articulate it very well while being entertaining so they draw a broad swath of listeners. And they are successful and seem cool and that snowballs into more listeners who can use the fact that they're fans as cred towards being politically interested, even if they would never attend a protest and may even forget to vote.

Yeah, I know people buck at the comparison but chapo is definitely the daily show for the left. I think this is good thing. It's very accessible and entertaining and manages to be educational without feeling like homework. I think it was the RPPR tabletop gaming podcast that first referred me to Chapo actually and i've started to hear it come up on a lot of non-lefty podcasts lately and that genuinely surprises me.

It's cool that people who would be libs or chuds became chapo heads instead. as long as they aren't wreckers.

Hello everyone, I haven't been around in like a decade? or so and one of the very big local expectations back then was keeping the culture pure around here. You couldn't obsess over things going on at a different site, or if there was an SA way of doing something or referring to something, that always took preference over the outside ways, you wouldn't use outside memes or meme structures, stuff like that. At just a cursory glance in GBS now, though, I notice a lot of reddit/twitter/4chan terminology and ways of referring to stuff, two or three threads just cataloging various reddit weirdoes, etc. I couldn't find any explicit rules or anything mentioning a change so is this just not enforced now, or what?

Good Tom Groyper posted:

I dunno, its kind of hard to relate, like, if you called something a "meme" instead of "image macro" you'd be corrected. There were all kinds of little things like that, if you said "TFW" for that feel when, you could get probated for "4chan poo poo," but now I've seen that posted in one current GBS thread I was reading and it seemed unironic. It's like, I see lots of people using terms for things, or catchphrases that originated on other nerd sites, for jokes and once upon a time that meant probation. There was a thing about how posting on SA meant being "goons" and creating an identity.

very normal my dude

also lol of course a groyper guy is concerned with cultural purity, very on brand
