I'd say the big difference is is the rural/urban divide being a more important political consideration than the states

Red state/Blue state is largely a fiction of gerrymandering. Back in 1860, whether you lived in a slave state vs a free state defined your entire way of life. Urban vs Suburban vs Rural is the new divide

In the one and only presidential election in 1861, Jefferson Davis ran unopposed. The popular vote total was 48,522, which is about 3.3% of the estimated adult white male franchise.

I was referring to the fact that in most states, whichever party is in control comes down to gerrymandering of districts just as much as population tendencies.

Soyboys live in Texas as much as CHUDs live in New York, and the population breakdown comes down to whether you live in an urban or rural area.

What these civil war 2 people aren't taking into account is it would be a war between the large cities and the smaller settlments, not the red states vs blue states

Yeah that applies for states where there's a pretty thin margin between the two, but there are most definitely solid Red and solid Blue states. Gerrymandering doesn't cause a state to go 30-40 years with the same party in the governor's mansion, or cause one candidate to get 60%+ in the presidential election. But you're right, the most solidly red states are the ones that are mostly rural, and vice-versa.

Oklahoma is the most solidly red state in the union, but the state actually had a majority of voters registered as Democrats until the early 2000's. The Democrat demographics are still largely around, but they have been systemically disenfranchised to the point of not even bothering to register to vote.
