Pinterest Mom posted:That's not how the basic personal amount works in Canada, or in any province that I'm aware of. Everybody receives exactly the same tax credit from the basic personal amount, which is equal to the lowest rate * amount. You're not subtracting from your income, you're just receiving a tax credit exactly offsetting the tax you would have to pay on the first X of your income. Oh hey, my bad. Looks like that is how it goes.

Yeah, the basic exemption is just a credit at a flat rate, not a deduction. The only way it's really unfair is to rich couples who can afford to have a spouse not work, in which case it can be transferred to the working spouse. Again, it's a flat amount of 15% federal + provincial amount (5.05% in Ontario).

I don’t think people who are leaning Liberal or PC right now are likely to respond positively to an explicit message of socialism at this point. Let them experience the benefits of diet socialism for a few years to soften them up. I just wish Andrea had responded to Ford’s “I’m scared of an NDP govt” with “you should be” Make it clear that that... creature is an enemy of all people. Most would agree.

Vote splitting on the left and a comfortable PC Majority won on hot air. Most people think Ford won that debate decisively. And there’s lots more that just dismiss everything the NDP have to say as readily as they’d cheer for the leafs over the Canadiens.

That poll doesn't indicate any vote splitting on the left post debate as nothing shifted back to the liberals. There was a 4 point shift between the NDP and Cons which I find hard to believe but if other polls play it out then sure. All media I read post debate said Doug Ford looked like a fool during the debate, but I don't read the Toronto Sun so maybe they had something positive to say.

Nobody knows, including apparently the PC. It's a total crap shoot of promises that don't mesh. Exactly. It's really just a matter of how far you're willing to go in making your promises practically impossible and/or amorphous. The playbook afterwards, if he gets elected, is to play on the "well you KNEW we had to make these cuts to be fiscally responsible". If beer doesn't cost $1 it will somehow be Wynne's fault is all. Repeat ad nauseum with most future policies. It's either "well this is the mandate" or "it was THEIR fault".

PT6A posted:Oh, that's bad. It gives an almost equivalent benefit to workers (a few hundred dollars less but Dougie doesn't care about that) but the money comes from the state through decreased revenue, rather than coming from corporations through higher wages. It's a way to give workers slightly more money in their pockets by shrinking the state instead of by making rich people pay ever so slightly more than poverty wages. It's exactly the kind of policy you would expect from a conservative party that wants to look like it's appealing to workers but still actually only cares about redistributing more wealth to the rich.

I think what people often forget is that when so many people like us posting in this thread see some conservative heap of poo poo "out" him self as a racist poor-hating idiot who trips over their own words we think that's going to hurt them, the problem is that a huge chunk of voters see this and get excited thinking "Wow, this guy says what I think and talks like a regular guy like me!" That's the horrifying thing, that the "ugly right" is learning it doesn't need to hide behind a facade of respectability in this post-trump era.

Worth noting that the PC leading Ipsos poll sample size was ~20% smaller than the NDP leading Mainstreet one. I still think we're inside the margin of error for both though. I also think the PC vote is more concentrated in the Toronto suburbs while the NDP is more spread around the province, which means the NDP picks up more seats at a tie but that's probably bias on my part.
