If I absolutely must fall asleep early to wake up in the middle of the night for a flight, what's the best way to help it along? Whiskey? Nyqil? Hard cardio? Or is this just some Faustian bargain?

I'm trying to buy an item from a website, which says they "will, under most circumstances, ship your order within two business days of purchase." What does two-day shipping mean here? If I order Sunday afternoon, does that mean they'll send it out by Tuesday and it'll reach me after that? Or does that mean it'll reach me by Tuesday?

They're saying they'll attempt to ship it out within two business days, not that they have two day shipping. So if you order on Sunday, they can wait til Tuesday afternoon to actually send it out the door and have it picked up by a delivery company (alternately, it might go out as early as Monday morning or even immediately, depending on the shipping you chose). Then the delivery company will take their own time period to deliver. Essentially, don't count on it arriving by Tuesday, although they'll probably have it out the door by Monday, as the "we may take two business days" thing covers them for any shipping delays.

Or just suffer through and maintain your regular schedule. I wouldn’t take any drugs to help the process along unless I was used to them, because I might misjudge and sleep through. That’s just me though.

Generally the best I can manage is a long nap during the day (up to three hours max, I tend to wake up naturally at that point) but it’s amazing how much smaller periods of sleep can help you keep going.

Repeat the next day for the day of your flight, so you're running on 5 hours of sleep as opposed to none. Flying on zero hours of sleep is the most traumatizing experience, you end up feeling so sick and nauseous and it's even worse if you can't sleep properly on the plane. Otherwise, if the flight is tonight, gl hf. You'll probably toss and turn in bed and be unable to sleep. Taking Nyquil or drinking whiskey isn't a good idea, Nyquil will leave you feeling groggy as all hell (and you risk sleeping through your alarm) and whiskey will probably just get you tipsy but still unable to sleep.

In my city there are some traffic signals where you can’t tell what color the light is until you get pretty close. Is this by design, or is there something wrong with them? They don’t look particularly old.

They don’t look particularly old. Yes that's usually by design, and they have some manner of polarizing filter on them to intentionally keep you from seeing them. The intention is that you won't get confused by which signals to obey when there's two very close together intersections, and that for others you won't feel safe going full speed ahead because you can already see a green light in the distance once yours turns.

During the age of exploration, how were language barriers originally crossed? Particularly regarding portugal's colonial policy of mostly being trade based rather than military like France and England. How could the Portuguese sailors establish any sort of deals in India, Macau, or Japan when their own language had absolutely nothing in common with the indigenous languages of the area. Pointing at things is fine and well but that doesn't seem good enough for establishing diplomacy. Do you have to wait for children to grow up in the presence of both?

Methanar posted:During the age of exploration, how were language barriers originally crossed? When you're talking Eurasia and Africa, there was always someone who knew an intermediary language. Trade routes to East Asia from Europe had been in place so long there was exchange of trade between Rome and the eastern coasts of China. Plus the whole reason they went trading that way was because they already knew about the places and their people for millenia before, they were just trying to get around some of the people the trade normally went through. So eg Portugese people would trade with the Ottomans speaking Turkish and Arabic and those Ottomans would trade directly with people speaking Hindi and other languages. So you'd hire away a guy who spoke Turkish or Arabic that people in Portugal knew, and they would be your go-between when you took the long way around Africa and showed up in a port. This also made it pretty easy to teach the languages as needed, because you had several different multilingual people with overlapping languages working together so you could skip the really hard parts needed when people started showing up to the Americas. Even with that though, you'd have people working out basic vocabulary and charades type stuff to indicate actions, and you could start a basis for communicating from there, and then a number of years of communicating builds up a relatively robust understanding group of bilingual people who can further teach.

My iPad (first gen, so old as hell) seems to be stuffed. We mostly use it to hand to the kids on car trips to keep them quiet, so if it is completely stuffed it's not the end of the world. Currently, it's "stuck" with the calendar pulled down from the top of the screen, and you can't swipe it back up. If you swipe down on the calendar part in the picture, it moves a little then resets. You can't swipe the unlock section at the bottom at all, and no screen input seems to work anywhere else. Holding down the sleep/wake button brings up the "slide to turn off" thing but you can't slide it because that part of the screen is covered. I've tried connecting it to iTunes but it asks me to grant it permission on the iPad, which I can't, because the screen section is covered. Anyone know how I would go about getting this thing to figure itself out short of a factory reset? Memento fucked around with this message at 09:33 on May 28, 2018 |

My shower has two taps, one for on / power, and the other for heat. With the heat tap turned all the way down, its kinda warm. It's like, the temperature I normally take a shower at. This is fine and all, because it just means I leave it turned right down, but if I'm doing something like using my shower to clean some boots and dont want to waste hot water, or like at the moment its really hot and I want a cold shower, I cant. I heard that there was some way you could change the heat of water coming out of a boiler to a shower, might it be that something on my boiler is set to 'hot'? I'm in England, and have an immersion heater, if that changes anything? Thanks!

I’ve been using the Google news app for some time and they’ve updated it recently and maybe that will help I don’t know. The problem I have with the app now is the same problem I’ve always had which is that I have zero interest in sports news but my feed is always swamped with football news and some other sports news, mostly football. I repeatedly select “show me fewer stories like this” and yet every loving day I check the app and there’s a whole swarm of football stories. I’ve asked for fewer stories about football several hundred times now and it’s still as bad ever, what I’ve also done is go into the Sports tab and told the app to hide sources that are football or sports websites in order that at least those sources will be hidden on the main tab. I’ve tried googling this and had no luck, so what do I do? Just keep on saying “fewer stories like this” until it reaches a critical mass of being told 100,000 loving times to hide football news.

I did think though, the tap in the bathroom sink is a mixer, and is fine, it's only the shower? I think that the actual issue here is that your shower isn't running cold water - when you have the heat fully turned down, it should be cold water, not warm. That suggests that either your cold water pressure to the shower is too low, or the fancy mixer tap is buggered. That said, if turning down the temp on the immersion heater doesn't stop the sink tap from giving usable water temperatures, then that's a very easy fix. The plumber probably just picked a random high temperature - people complain if water is too cold a lot more than if it is too hot. Give it a try: it's piss-simple as long are you can use a screwdriver without stabbing yourself in the eye and you remember to always check the power with a tester before opening anything up. Depending on your water usage, it might take a couple of days to get the temp settled, so don't go mad and adjust it after every shower.

Is there a thread for upcoming technologies or discoveries? I'm thinking about a thread where people in a field of science might discuss developments in their area, whether they have been a long time in coming, or are just something currently being worked toward. Speculative fiction by layman's (of which I definitely am myself) are alright in a fictional story, but I'm hoping to look at some actual news. Would it be best to ask per topic in the sci/acad subforum?
