Anybody listen to this podcast --> https://dissectpodcast.com/ They do a deep dive on one album a season, focusing on one track per episode. The first season was TPAB, the 2nd was MDTBF, and the current season is covering Frank Ocean. I haven't listened to any of it yet, but the concept seems interesting. I found out about it because the host was a guest on Heat Rocks (http://maximumfun.org/shows/heat-rocks) which is another interesting podcast where the hosts (Oliver Wang & Morgan Rhodes) discuss a single album with a musical guest. I've only listened to 2 episodes so far, Pharoahe Monch talking about Breaking Atoms from Main Source and Cut Chemist talking about Cyamande.

Everything about this new Kanye album feels like one of those bedroom indie singer-songwriter releases where the artist just recorded some poo poo for their close friends and family and threw it on bandcamp with a silly lowercase album title and a cover art taken from their iPhone camera roll It's his first real creative miss imo but i'm not going to fault him for valuing his own mental health and the happiness of his wife and children over releasing a classic album every 2 years. I think this process of working overtime to create an album over 2 weeks while making a public spectacle of it is taking a serious toll on his mental health and creative output and I really wish he would just quietly work on an album on his own time and just announce the record when it's in a finished (or near-finished) state instead of constantly putting himself through the wringer like this. I wouldn't call him washed because Daytona clearly proves that he is still capable of making incredible music, but I think this album shows the limits of Kanye's creative process, especially when he is intentionally putting unnecessary constraints on the album's production. Every iconic artist has their low periods, I guess. It is what it is

I still ride for a lot of the early anticon releases and alias and jel are (were rip alias) good producers. pretty much the run from music for the advancement of hip hop to personal journals had a lot of really good music. and i actually like a bunch of the early why? stuff after they kinda moved from rap to indie rock. that said their stuff is def a little bit too up their own rear end a lot of the time (sole and doseone being the biggest offenders) (i mean they put out an album called "music for the advancement of hip-hop"). that said they approached poo poo from an entirely different direction from pretty much anyone else and a lot of those dudes could rap even if pretty much all of them have terminal cases of white dude voice. also refn and von trier have way too much precision in their movies to be compared to kanye. if anything he's like some weird michael bay/harmony korine hybrid
