My local public library just added free Kanopy streaming, which appears to have a whole lot (all?) of Criterion's catalog.

Egbert Souse posted:August releases: A lotta people gonna disagree with me but The Tree of Life is easily the least exciting release this month. I haven't seen Gregorio Cortez but director Robert Young's Alambrista is one of the overall best and almost universally underseen films in the collection, and the Blu Ray of it is gorgeous.

Also, the RKO library tends to need more work because the film elements generally suck. A lot of the major restorations had to use film elements from the UK or Europe like Citizen Kane and King Kong since the US sources weren't in as good of shape. Though, I read somewhere the original negative to Ambersons still exists.

I just finished The Housemaid. What in the gently caress was that epilogue?

It's great, isn't it?

# ? Jun 4, 2018 14:52 |

Yeah. Most of the rest of the film works as a kind of straightforward Hitchcockian thriller, but that epilogue caught me off-guard in a way that a film hasn’t in a while.

If you'd like to see more by Kim Ki-young, I definitely recommend Killer Butterfly, one of his later works, which you can watch for free on YouTube. It deals with similar themes as The Housemaid and leans a lot more heavily on the absurd and surrealist elements that are hinted at in his earlier work.

I blind bought A Touch of Zen and that turned out to be an extremely good decision. A stunningly beautiful film that totally justifies it's length. I'll definitely be picking up Dragon Inn when the next sale comes around.

Is the B&N sale supposed to be happening this month? I’ve got a 20% off coupon I’m hoping to stack.

And I would recommend watching more King Hu his lesser known films are still amazing. Kino just put out the new restoration of Legend of the Mountain and it’s got some of the best King Hu nature photography and is easily the best movie I’ve seen so far this year.

Andrei Rublev finally went OOP on DVD, so a Blu upgrade is probably coming soon. It's touring from Janus Films right now.

So what you're saying is I own a collectable OOP Criterion (until the blu comes out and then I'll have to upgrade because the Andrei Rublev DVD is dated as hell)? Nice.

The Andrei Rubelev disc has the worst technically implemented commentary I've ever seen. Scene specific with large pauses during some of it so you're never sure if it's over and you can't watch just the commented scenes in a row. It's a fantastic movie and I'm really looking forward to the Blu.

The single best film about the artist's struggle. Can't wait for the blu.

Beautiful movie. That bell-forging sequence is something else. Been waiting for the blu for a while now. I think the filmstruck transfer is the new remaster. Looks good.
