Darchangel posted:Yeah, if the company I'm contracted to doesn't pick me up, I guess I'll look at the ACA stuff. I pay about $200/wk for my family between the health care coverage (Blue Cross/Blue Shield) that DOESN'T cover hospitalization or specialists, and supplemental insurance that pays out in the event of hospital/ER visits. On the plus side, the BC/BS coverage is $0 copays for non-hospital or specialist visits and prescriptions. This is fine for me, but my wife is starting to have some issues that require specialists and non-formulary drugs. Please help me identify whatever the hell this is: There's no power button at all from what I can find and I've even felt around the whole bezel. It’s a Thunderbolt Display, it only works with Macs. There’s no power button. You can’t use it with a Mini DisplayPort output despite the connector being identical.

Yeah I've narrowed it down to a problem with the Mac desktop that the prof is using. I'm able to get display if I plug in a Macbook pro to it. I swear I'm not an idiot it just baffles me why you would make a monitor that ostensibly has no way to test it's function without connecting it to something. Like I'd be fine if I got "no signal" or something like that.

Apple doesn't want want you to do any troubleshooting. They want you to bring it down to the Apple Store so they can sell you more stuff while you're waiting

To do the thunderbolt passthrough with usb breakout turned out to be pretty complex, and there is a lot going on in there. There's a reason Apple stopped developing them.

The Iron Rose posted:As a topic change, what are good interview questions to ask for a new position? Offer is pretty much sealed, but what are the sort of questions you ask, red flags y'all look for when switching positions? Big red flags would be the interviewer asking you potential illegal questions like marital status or religion. Asking comfort questions like would you be comfortable with a predominantly male team. It sounds like you are past this. Also research the company to see if there are trends that are a problem and have an idea of the salary range and benefits. Some of these you can research ahead of time but especially at larger companies the answers will depend on your specific role and manager. Any of these can be red flags, or they could be totally fine depending on your needs. It is easier to ask an open ended question and learn from their answer instead of asking a specific question that you really want answered. Always be positive. Don't ask why the last guy quit. Ask if it is a new position or if you are replacing someone. Ask to have them take you through a regular workday. Ask who will you be reporting to(and hopefully they are involved in the interview process.) Ask how is success measured at the company or what can you do to be a successful 'job title'. Ask about how on call rotation is handled or general expectations for work outside of normal hours. Then ask followup questions as relevant to your position and their answers. On call rotation specifics are more important for something like a site reliability engineer where you are expected to respond to and triage an issue within minutes.

Thanks Ants posted:It’s a Thunderbolt Display, it only works with Macs. There’s no power button. What he said. You *should* be able to use it with a Thunderbolt/Thunderbolt 2-equipped PC, if you can find one. I've not tried this, so YMMV. stevewm posted:Oh wow... lol I thought that was a iMac... It looks exactly like one minus the SD card slot. The giveaway is the extra cable coming out of the back. That's the Thunderbolt and power-for-Macbook cable. Other than that, they are almost identical, thanks to the built-in port replicator. I was mistaken, though - I thought that they had a power button, but Thanks Ants is right. It's been over a year since I had one available. The Fool posted:Apple doesn't want want you to do any troubleshooting. Thanks Ants posted:Yeah also the signal cable is loving captive because Apple are complete bastards. A VESA mount is $20, BTW, if it uses the same foot as the iMac. There's a release that lets the leg swivel a bit further, which exposes screw to detach the leg, then you replace it with a mount. I don’t remember ever needing ECC, but if you didn’t have exactly the right speed and latency you were going to have a bad time.

Don’t forget about the Cinema Display which is very similar but connects using Mini-DisplayPort and USB, you could use that with other computers if you wanted. And you can charge your Mac with it! Very nice. Another dumb thing about them is they look just like an iMac but if you put them side by side they don’t line up! They were expensive but you can get them for like $300 used now. Remember this was way back in like 2010 when these came out, and there were actual Macs you could connect to them without an adapter. Light years ahead. LG makes the monitors now and they still don’t have power buttons but you can get power and video over a single USB-C cable. But at least with the 22” 4K model it has NO OTHER VIDEO INPUTS WTF

I got hired without certs, but I feel like I lucked sacked into this one, because I'm a year out of finishing my BS in IT. Are you just doomed to having to do call center work/geek squad/frys if you have no prior work experience, no certs, and no degree?

If you're looking for a first job an A+ and Network+ might be valuable signaling to employers in terms of getting them to look at your resume. Additionally, if you study for them using the Meyers gold books you might accidentally learn something useful too? I still have my old one around somewhere and occasionally consult it.

45 ACP CURES NAZIS posted:looking into babies first IT job, do I need to get a certification first? Now here is the most important part: all three of these hires were internal transfers. Two came from our call center and one is an intern I grabbed from our proof department. Being able to talk to their managers and eliminate that unknown value of whether they will be jerks is a really nice thing, especially for entry level positions which are customer service heavy. I probably would not hire someone with no certs, no experience, and no IT related degree off of the street, because there is always going to be interest in those positions from within my own organization.
