Memento posted:At the moment it's just really interesting and really hot. The fact that it's coming straight up off the mantle with no dwell time means that it's going to be pretty neat from a research point of view, because getting samples that haven't sat senescent in a magma chamber for however-many-years gives us more insight into the mantle composition. What I'm getting from this is Atlantis is coming back up and Hawai'i is going to be its new capital. What's the hottest lava that ever came out of the earth? Prob some poo poo that busted thru while the surface was still crispy, but would the composition have been drastically different?

Don't forget Salonen getting extra fingers. Not in a mutagenic sense: some idiot in the crowd reached out to touch his car as it flashed by, and things went about as well as you'd expect for that person.

Rally classics: oof https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wqQhQSbe6fw Very bad rally crew: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D9-voINFkCg very good rally crew: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=30dxrwd0Kss Ear porn: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TtR5OOHZSp4 For a long time, Group B was as fast as it got, they severely curtailed engine power after a few big fatal crashes. Now, up til that point, rally was basically hammer down til top speed -> brake heavily -> lumber your way through the corner -> power back on ASAP; they handled about as well as the farm trucks the early AWD systems were based on. With engine power capped, they had to get faster in the corners, so suspension, tire and drivetrain tech got extremely sophisticated. Lately, they've been letting power creep back up, and the racing is getting insane; compare this vid with the Group B footage above: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cKKMHH7LZD8 Hopefully they can keep up this kind of speed without killing anyone. TL;DR: Rally is pretty much Occupational Safety Hazards made manifest.

SniperWoreConverse posted:What I'm getting from this is Atlantis is coming back up and Hawai'i is going to be its new capital. You're actually right, it was a very long time ago. Komatiite lava was up to 500 °C hotter than the hottest lava today - 1700 compared to the 1200 we're seeing at Hawaii right now. The lava at Hawaii flows like room-temperature honey; Komatiite lava flowed like water, with the density of rock. We're talking Meso- to Neo-Archean, 3-2.8 billion years ago. The Earth's mantle and core were a lot hotter at the time due to relict heat from planetary formation and far greater abundance of radioactive elements that have almost all decayed today. As far as composition is concerned, Komatiite lavas are extremely Magnesium rich, and generally have very elevated (10-20 times greater than general crustal abundance) nickel, cobalt and chromium concentrations Komatiitic lava was responsible for the formation of the deposit that my supervisor did his PhD on, the Kambalda massive sulphide nickel deposit in Western Australia.

I mean it's correct in a super autist technical kinda way. It's automating some stuff (but not everything) the same way an airplane autopilot does. But yeah, pop culture has made the term mean something completely different and it would be smart to realize this means some people are going to do dumb poo poo like this because of it. Question from a country where guns aren't candy. I thought you had to apply pretty serious pressure to the trigger of a pistol to get it to fire? I know the Australian police handguns all have a pretty high trigger weight(?). Are law enforcement running around with hair triggers over there? How does this happen mechanically?

They should absolutely not fire when dropped. There have been recalls over this iirc.
