might as well ask here since it just came up and ive been wondering about it

what is it about computer touchers in particular that make them so allergic to changes?

like i get that nobody likes changes in general and it gets worse as you get older (and figure out that most change isnt for the better) but it seems really acute with computer people. whether its going out of your way to stay on a decade old os or deciding youre going to organize your music by folder structure and use foobar instead of being normal it seems like its always computer people fighting the future full bore dying on hills that simply make no sense at all

i mean i get that some things change for the worse but some things change for the better and usually that thing you think is worse isnt really worse its just different
lowtax (or maybe one of his minions) once wrote a front page piece about linux where he said that most people use computers to get something done, but with linux, the computer is the thing to get done

there's certainly plenty of computer touchers who love to upgrade linux constantly as if they have nothing else to do with the computer. but there are also touchers who do have something else to do, and are working on problems that have enough technical subtlety that an arbitrary upgrade could set them back. So they prefer not to upgrade, and I don't see why this is surprising.

People hated going from xp to Vista, and rightfully so, it sucked poo poo. I don't recall a single person ever whining about Windows 7 even it when it first came out. peeps in this thread are revising history

people complained about windows 8 because, like Vista, it sucked poo poo. This isn't much of a phenomenon to be confused by

Windows 10 is way better than 8 but still has a ton of annoyances, and people who went right from 7 to 10 (because 8 sucked poo poo) are just the same complaints but now from people who went from 7 to 10 and smartly didn't bother with 8 at all (because it sucked poo poo)

i went from 7 to 8, 8.1, and 10 and honestly it felt like a downhill slide all the way

i could chalk it up to getting old, but i like gnome 3 a lot. too bad i need adobe software, so macos with the dock on the left it is

When i was setting up my make cabinet a few months ago one of the forums warned that mame will stop supporting XP in like 2020 or something lol

I mean it's a little more understandable on an arcade machine but really anything that isn't compatible on 7 isn't compatible on XP

no they're calling you a sperg because you want to trick out your desktop computer with the equivalent of android mods from the xda forums. you could instead configure the os to stop doing web/app store searches, but apparently that's a bridge too far

also that guy who wants needs to be able to see all his apps at once when he hits the start menu, that was introduced in windows 8 and everybody hated it so it's turned off by default in windows 10, but you can turn the start screen back on if you want

yeah this is all good when it works right

when it doesn't it absolutely requires janitoring to make the repetitive restarts and failed updates stop tho

sorry if it enrages you

edit: just for shits and giggles I just tried to go to an Administrative Tool entry (Task Scheduler). In classicshell I click start and just point my arrow over to control panel and Admin tools and never leave the start screen and never have to click anything except Task Scheduler

in the normal win10 start menu I have to go to the control panel, which opens a window, then Administrative Tools, which opens another window, and then Task Scheduler. Then i have to close these two windows after i'm done

stop defending windows 10, it is literally indefensible

although the guy who made Classic Shell eventually got tired of trying to keep up with microsofts bullshit and dropped development of it, it's only a matter of time before it stops working entirely because of the windows 10 rolling feature upgrades. So if you're not already using it, it's probably better just learning to cope with what you have.
