I wonder if, like, there's a cabal of authors and filmmakers on places like Amazon grumbling about how the lack of quality control means it's impossible for them to succeed in an overcrowded market with no curation or if that is entirely limited to gamers.

I'm sure that somewhere there is an author of questionable gay dinosaur erotica cursing Chuck Tingle's name and saying that it should've been them, dammit.

I'm just wondering what kind of retarded dipshit relies on Steam's "recently updated" list as their sole outlet for what new games have been released.

I don't even go to the Steam marketplace to look for something unless I've heard about it either through a friend's recommendation, a website review, a Let's Play, or some kind of YouTube thingy.

If there are people who legitimately cannot find good new games because they're pushed aside by a wave of garbage releases, that says more about their own incompetence than it does about Steam.

Even the lovely self-pub authors get angry about it because the straight scam books drown out most visibility on Amazon now. It's kind of funny, really. Traditional authors / publishers bitch about the self pubs, who bitch about the erotica writers, who bitch about the markov scams / foreign freelance work-for-hires. The markov scams probably complain too, but it sounds a lot like what everyone else complains about. :v:

I honestly do look at Steam's new releases in search of games sometimes because their recommendations based on your past purchases seem to be absolutely worthless, and I'm the only person I know IRL who plays video games at all. That being said, the top sellers page usually ends up having all the good stuff anyway, so no big deal.

Dear sweet Jesus, yes. The complaining never ends. Gamers have nothing on authors for pure bitchiness.

Also steam users are kind of used to buying games when they do their regular sales, so someone who's on the fence on steamworld is more likely to wait for a price drop on PC compared to someone considering it on switch.

That definitely plays a role in it. My purchases are almost entirely games on sale.

I check the new release feed every once in a while, but these days the thread content far outweighs anything remotely playable, let alone something I'd actually like. Steam is a steaming pile ah horse crap, ammirite guys? :dadjoke:

One has to wonder, following their internal logic, what all the people involved in the process do if no decisions are to be made about quality or content.

Plus as I argued on their comments, that they aren't willing to be a final QA service doesn't excuse the fact that there is no effective elective QA service, you either get the highest promoted stuff or you get volumes of poo poo, or you get their useless automated recommendation system which for the past several years has mostly recommended me the same poo poo because it forgets after a month or two that you said you weren't interested. None of which are capable of picking out less advertised yet good titles from the ocean of sewage.

I know one of the things they look at in the approval process is whether the description on the store page correctly describes the game, so I guess now that's basically all they'll do.

Much like refunds there's no reason for them to start screening submissions until a country with actual consumer protection laws steps to bat and forces their hand because they're making more money for less work this way and the number of savy developers who are profiting off of it handily outnumber the always-complaining indie devs who blame their failure on everyone but theirselves.

I admit, I'm eating crow here. This is so monumentally self-destructive a tack to take- I was sure that when push came to shove(lware), Valve would do the needful and just hire like 100 content reviewers and set up a workflow with some easy loopholes.

They're collecting 30 percent off the top of a huge fraction of the entire gaming market, and occasionally releasing tech or demos that effectively become the foundation of a generation of game designs. Great work if you can get it.

I believe you when you talk about the tech and demos, but I'm really struggling to think of what the last big thing was from them... SteamVR? The Steam Controller? Steam Link? Well, they're trying to release new game-changing tech or demos. They're a private company with an infinite money tap, so rather than feeling pressured to make successful games, the devs are all just running around picking up different pet project that they think is gonna be the "next big thing", or at least whatever sounds cool and new. That's what all those things you listed came from, I'd say.
