18:9 is what phone makers are using to market their displays. You do hear it get referred to as 2:1 from content creators.

18:9 gets used because people suck at math and they need to compare it to 16:9.

Are you sure it wasn't the theatrical cut of that LotR movie? I remember at the time there was a lot of buzz about how there would be a lot of extra minutes of movie in the home video release, without comment on it being part of a second release. A lot of people, my family included, ended up buying the theatrical edition of Fellowship of the Ring, expecting the extended edition (which didn't come out for several months).

I definitely remember it being on VHS because I got the Two Towers and Return of the King extended editions on dvd, then went back and got Fellowship of the Ring later on because I didn't have it.

It's just crazy to me that all of our broadcast standards still revolve around our power frequency when TVs have been DC for over a decade.

60p as a transport stream sucks rear end and it's been made worse now that some network's just halved it for streaming.

ATSC should have standardized on 24/48/72 fps and deprecated all of this 30/60 poo poo.

The first HD TV I ever had:

We moved into a place that had a converted one-car garage into a den, so we had a long, narrow room with no windows. We hung a projection screen and bought an Optoma HD projector. So I went from a lifetime of, at best, a 36'' CRT (or that one friend you knew who had a rear projected "big screen" TV) to a widescreen, high def image six feet across was stunning. Of course, this was before everything was broadcast in HD so SD looked like absolute poo poo on it

Don’t skip anything of The Americans. I accidentally missed an episode in s1 and was utterly confused by 10 minutes into the next. Season 5 is slow, doesn’t mean you should/could skip it.

Do not skip season 5. It was slow and I get why people hated it watching weekly, but as a binge it's fine. It's the calm before the storm.

I'm still primarily a DVD purchaser because they're much cheaper most of the time and I don't care much about bonuses. I'll spring for a Blu Ray if it's a big blockbuster and just a few bucks more. And now adays the prices seem to be getting so the "multiformat" copy is actually the cheapest option on new releases. But there's still tons of cheap older DVDs I grab. Like I love digging through bins and adding to my library for a few bucks.

Edit: TVIV goons have an established tendency to lose interest in shows as they go on and turn on shows they once loved and that are still popular. I'm not saying that as an insult or to dismiss them. But when you read reviews you should always know what the tastes, biases, and patterns of the reviewer are so you can know how to read subjective criticism and praise.

My PS3 and now PS4 are great because they’re blu-ray players I can also do all my streaming on. I got the PS3 new for 110 dollars with a huge coupon in 2011, and the PS4 was like 190 used.

Though I also wonder if the whole thing where a lot of blu-rays have a DVD version packaged with them effects the numbers any.

Agreed. This thread sometimes goes from adoring a show to calling it total garbage sometimes before I even get to it so I usually just read the room as a general consensus that can be finicky.

I used to be all about buying shows and movies that I liked but then streaming became a thing and I only buy the occasional complete collection or a movie I have a lot of affection for. I'm actually in the process or culling my dvds, if I haven't watched it in a few years I'm not going to watch it again. Do I really need seasons 1-3 of Arrested Development on DVD when it's all on Netflix and I haven't opened the case since 2010?

I've largelly abandoned buying tv shows but I still like having favorite movies available if I'm in the mood and they're not on a streaming service. And if I can buy a movies for $5 or rent it for $4 I usually buy. Or if I can get one of those four movie sets where there's one movie I love and a couple I wouldn't mind seeing for a couple of bucks.

I'm also a little bit of a collector/hoarder nerd and while I've largelly shaken that habit DVDs remain the lingering vice.

At least it's been years since I bought a CD.

Backing up to VHS chat, we had an enormous VHS collection as a kid. My dad bought the first VCR he could get his hands on and we were taping EVERYTHING as well as buying films left and right. Well 13 year old Rhyno discovered you could tape over a lovely film if you covered that square so he had a pretty impressive collection of Skinemax porn hidden on the lovely, unwatched films that littered the basement.

e: ^^ we had a crazy VHS collection as kids, too. My dad had two VCRs set up and he'd bootleg everything we rented. It was great. His cataloguing of all the tapes was insane.

convenient af to throw in one tape and watch all Indiana Jones or Star Wars or Godfathers, though that last one had to take up two tapes for all three movies.

I bought Legion season 1 and don't regret it because drat that is a cool hologram cover. Orphan Black (season 1) and Lost (whole thing) have been good to loan around to streaming-challenged friends. It also took me about 15 years to get dvd season 3 of Upright Citizens Brigade to complete my set of the series. Last time I watched that show was before Amy Poehler was on SNL let alone Parks and Rec so I look forward to watching it again soon. Curious to see how it holds up (or doesn't).
