IME if you launch something at Apple wanted to show at WWDC, they sulk a bit but don’t bounce your app.

My guess would be that the Steam payment system is exposed in some way that they don’t like. They are savagely sensitive about that.

Yeah, prevailing theory is that Apple wasn't getting a 30% of sales from the Steam store if that was included in the app.

The store wasn't included in the app but I'm quite sure it'd be possible to buy games on your PC if you tab out and use the app like any other Remote Desktop app.

The steam store exists fully on the steam app already on iPhone, though. Do they get a cut of that?

No because you’re buying digital goods that can’t be consumed on the device in question, I believe.

It sounds like it worked so well it scared Apple into yanking the submission. So if Steam resubmitted with code that maybe disconnected you randomly and dropped frames regularly Apple might change their minds.

I was this close to buying a controller that'd work on the Apple TV.

tvOS 11.4 is out which brings AirPlay 2 to the AppleTV models.

The biggest upside is that the AppleTVs themselves become AirPlay 2 targets. So any speaker hooked up to any AppleTV running 11.4 can play anything you tell Siri to play from any device (which I wasn't completely aware of until today).

I found it a little weird I had to twice tell my AppleTV where it was after updating. Once was during the "Welcome to 11.4" screen and then again to actually setup AirPlay 2. Felt a little redundant.

However, AirPlay 2 makes my house feel like magic. Given how I can now command my AppleTV to do basic functions via my phone's Hey Siri functionality, I'd bet dollars to donuts the next AppleTV revision will have a built-in voice-activated Hey Siri function ala HomePod.

It always felt like it should've had this functionality back when they introduced the Siri button with the 4th-gen AppleTV, but hey, Apple has never been known for jumping at a future upgrade when it could wait 2 hardware revisions to introduce it.

Kind of weird thing I noticed after updating to 11.4. You can't name your atv just "Apple TV". That's what mine used to be so I've been trying to change it back but it won't take.

Fuck the DH
They don't want you to just name it "Apple TV", because AirPlay is region-based and not limited to a wifi network. So if you live in a neighborhood where there's multiple households that own Apple TVs, you can see other people's. Sometimes when trying to connect to mine I see a neighbor's, which is named "Royal Chambers".

If theirs was also named Apple TV and it caused confusion... I still wouldn't be able to play media on it without confirming with the four digit PIN, so it's not like you can play 2girls1cup on a neighbor's TV. But it's possible their Apple TV would power up the display via HDMI-CEC to display the PIN when you connect to it. I don't know if it does, but if it does, that would be really annoying at 2AM. It's still possible if you're trying to intentionally troll an Apple TV that isn't yours, so I'm guessing it's not, but this is the company that rolled out AirDrop without imposing any sort of limits on who around you can share data.

I live in a row of townhouses and I used to have a roku 3 before my ATV4k. I learned the hard way that the Roku was set up out of the box to let anyone access it.

My S/O was working at home when someone decided to start playing porn on our TV. So yeah...

That sort of makes sense. But the naming setup by default uses vague terms like "Living Room", "Bedroom", etc.

Not a big deal to me. Just noticed in tautalli that recent views were showing up under a different name than I was used to.

Yeah, it defeats the whole purpose of single sign on if you still have to reauthorize the app every once in awhile. It drives me nuts.

Also, I may have mentioned this a long time ago, but does anybody else use the Trailers app? It's had a bug literally from the moment the ATV4 was released where when I scroll down to the browse the trailers the categories list opens automatically and I have to close that before I can start browsing the trailers.

One would think it would have to because people with Dish/DirecTV and a separate ISP are a thing

I am happy wit these minor updates really. I really like my ATV4K its a great little box. I tried to go cheap and get the high end Roku 4k and it really was just s poo poo show. It wouldn't do HDR to save my life and the PQ wasn't nearly as good as the ATV4k.

Yeah the ATV is more expensive but really you kinda get what you pay for here. Add in the Airplay 2 stuff its just that much better at this point.

It's weird to see people call out how "expensive" the ATV is when it's sub-$200 but I guess compared to how insanely cheap Amazon and Roku stuff is it looks bad.

If it has the proper audio. I’ve been able to stream from a base model 2014 Mac with some success, I can only stream when the file has AC3 audio. It chokes on TRUEHD in my setup

I’d gladly pay Apple for the needed codecs they don’t use themselves but is otherwise widely used.

Yeah, it's a shame to have to switch apps but I'd rather do that that switch between my Gen 4 and XPLAY on my TV which is my current solution. I'll have to look up full list of compatibility (PGS subs etc) but I've only heard good things about Infuse, and it sounds like they have, or are, doing Plex integration which sounds neat. I remember having issues with the free version, but that was ages ago and I'm sure I can work it out as my setup isn't complicated. Thanks!

Awesome, sounds ready to upgrade then. You can force the Apple TV to output in 1080p too still I presume (like the older model allows lower resolution). Just as my second TV running from my receiver isn’t 4K ready and I imagine it’ll just give a blank screen at native res.

e: did they ever quash that bug where sometimes loading a video will kill it down to 0 bytes? The Infuse devs seemed to be washing their hands of it when I last looked.

I've been using Infuse for more than a year now and had never even heard of that bug, which would make my blood boil, so I wouldn't worry about it.

You can select the output res for the ATV in settings. I also highly recommend turning on Match Content and Framerate, which Infuse supports.

The greatest benefit to Infuse is that since it's designed for local streaming, your uncompressed remuxes and BD images (which Plex doesn't even support) stay uncompressed, always, with no transcoding. Plex refuses to make this as simple as it ought to be, likely because the video engine is not really robust enough for it. It's really for web streaming and poverty wifi.

Yeah Plex *really* have their priorities mixed up on the compatibility front, it’s a shame but it sounds like infuse should slot in nicely. And useful the down sampling works the same on the 4K model as the old ones. I’d kick myself if I suddenly lost my 2nd feed.

With regards to the 0 byte bug, it was affecting some users of High Sierra but not everyone. Apparently changing the read/write permissions to read only didn’t stop it from happening, so the devs said ‘well it’s an OS X bug then, so hassle them’ despite nobody ever having an issue with any other software other than Infuse. I’ll track it down and see whether it’s still a factor (I couldn’t find the thread on the first few pages of their forum, which is encouraging).

KOTEX GOD OF BLOOD
Jul 7, 2012

I use High Sierra but my files are all stored on Synology units so YMMV. The devs are very responsive to bugs and engine improvements if not feature additions so I would be surprised if it's still a problem.
