It's also insane because they pay 47% while controlling, gosh, almost the entirety of the nation's wealth as generated by it's exploited labor, while also cheating on their taxes to the degree of billions of dollars if not more. So really they should be paying 110%

a wealth reduction tax is something David Harvey has advocated before.

Well, for me, that statistic isn't a conversation stopper because the percentage of all federal income which the top 1% of earners should pay should rise with income inequality as the dependent statistic, so as not to let the rich become too powerful.

also, because income isn't where the wealthy get the most of their gains, it's capital gains and dividends which is taxed at a lower rate that results in an effective tax rate that's comparable to that of lower and middle class folks. and poor people end up paying that similar rate out of their non-discretionary income while rich people aren't gonna starve from their taxing (or cause a downturn from their class's underconsumption since they sit on their money instead of putting it right back in the economy)

Well, for me, that statistic isn't a conversation stopper because the percentage of all federal income which the top 1% of earners should pay should rise with income inequality as the dependent statistic, so as not to let the rich become too powerful. Being exact about it would require some f(x) mathematical formula, and our own legal system abhors mathematical formulas which are more complicated than piecewise-linear so that the lawyers will be able to understand them without mathematicians' help. In a debate, I do not think a goalpost like in a scientific paper is always necessary to have, and you don't have to be an EPA environmentalist knowledgeable about what the exact level of lead should be in our water that accurately trades off the economic costs and the health effects to know something's wrong when it's poisoning people like in Flint, Michigan. In these cases, a description of the problem should suffice. The top 1% of earners are earning the largest share of our country's income since the 1920s, peaking just before the Great Depression.
focusing very narrowly on just the federal income tax and wage income is an intentional fox news-like deception. an honest analysis would look at all forms of income and all forms of taxes (e.g. capital gains, payroll, FICA, state income, property, sales, vice, gas). you would look at effective tax rates and not just marginal tax rates that the media loves to deceivingly report. taxation in the US as a % of peoples' income is just barely progressive and much worse than the federal income tax would suggest.

of course he can pardon himself and it doesn't practically matter. if you want to get a president out of office, here's how it's going to happen:

1. voted out through an election
2. term limited
3. death
4. removed by cabinet through 25th amendment vote
5. impeachment
6. constitutional amendment abolishing the executive (lol)
7. voluntary resignation

that's it

Pretty messed up that the American people can only implement one of those options, but it's been done before and can be done again
