I'd like to think that that would be the breaking point and there would be mass riots across the country. But it's 2018 and I'm pretty sure most people think the only bad thing about Trump is his mean tweets.

Man that Scottsdale murder spree feels like one of those things where poo poo happens and there's nothing that could've been done (heading off gun chat here) because society is not designed around being on your guard for life threatening situations at any moment when you're working at a law or psychiatric office.

Wouldn't accepting the pardon allow them to compel Pandapants (my phone autocorrected to this and I'm keeping it) to cooperate anyway?

psydude posted:Wouldn't accepting the pardon allow them to compel Pandapants (my phone autocorrected to this and I'm keeping it) to cooperate anyway? Technically yes, my understanding is accepting the pardon means you also accept the guilt and waive your fifth amendment rights. The question is if you have a guy who will pardon you of any federal crimes (and Nixon was pardoned of anything he might have done, so it's not like the pardon is limited to a specific crimes, so long as all the crimes are federal), what's the stick you use to compelled them to testify truthfully instead of pulling an Ollie North?

But for the regular version, yes, the court could order you detained until you answered questions to the Court's liking, but that's not a recipe for "now tell us everything you know" as opposed to dragging info out bit by bit with little way to verify the truth.

psydude posted:Criminal contempt is different from contempt of court, though. Right, like I said. The judge could parse his statements line by line and threaten to toss him in jail for contempt if he wasn't more forthcoming in whatever areas the judge thinks are relevant. That destroys most of his value as a witness though without some way to verify a particular statement. And if you have that, you don't really need a hostile witness's statement in the first place.

Crakkerjakk posted:Technically yes, my understanding is accepting the pardon means you also accept the guilt and waive your fifth amendment rights. Papadopoulos already pled guilty and already waived his 5th Amendment rights re: those charges (and most likely re: his whole course of conduct, as part of his plea bargain) The backstop on his perjuring himself or 'forgetting' is losing the plea bargain (though he could avoid punishment with a pardon) and perjury or false statement charges. If the president just starts pardoning everyone for everything, then there's impeachment and state charges.
